where your creativity and your unique ideas
will come from. It will also help you gain the
skills and confidence to take it to the next
level – onto a bigger canvas, board or even a
wall!
Now, everyone will have a different
inspiration trigger, so I hope to find yours!
Our aim is to get you back into your
art and be as excited about it as we
are.
Let’s get started!
November 2018 ART ESSENCE NEWSLETTER
This month I will keep it simple and just
get you sketching - hopefully every day.
I came across a few ideas that I think
might help with this...
Life Drawing.
hether
you’re into
drawing the
figure or not this is a
staple for all artists.
How it helps:
1. Learning to draw what you see, not
what you think you see.
2. Keeping line work simple and
suggestive rather than exact.
3. Learning to find your own style.
4. Almost any medium is suitable and
often will give you different effects
if you mix it up.
5. Stops you from over-thinking your
mark making. You don’t have time!
6. Understanding light, shadow and
reflective light.
7. Practice tonal value ranges in
monotone.
8. Go to a live class – this helps to get
you motivated and around like
minded people (trust me – this
works). We have well attended Life Drawing classes in
both Maryborough: http://www.ourfrasercoast.com.au/Events/EventId/
2403/e/gatakers-artspace-life-drawing-group
and Hervey Bay: https://www.facebook.com/events/24022185600036
08/
If you are not comfortable going to
see/draw the real thing or simply cannot
make it: there are plenty of online classes
that you can conveniently pause or change
depending on what you want to work on.
GET STRAIGHT INTO IT HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sio9KRgRUSY OR SELECT PREFERRED MODELS TO SUIT
YOUR NEEDS HERE:
https://line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-
drawing/
GET OUTSIDE!!! Obviously you do not need to head on over to a class or sit in your studio to draw. Take your sketch pad, your charcoal, pencils, inks, gouache, pens or whatever you prefer and grab yourself a coffee and a muffin at your local busy café, market place or park. These are always full of life and interesting characters and this also means you have to sketch quickly as you have no idea as to how long your models will hang around! Also a good excuse to check out some of our great cafes, parks and markets in our area!

Catherine Jenna Hendry
CJ Hendry was born in South Africa raised in Brisbane, Australia. She attended architecture at Queensland University of Technology and Finance at University of Queensland in Australia, before dropping out to pursue an art career in 2013. Hendry lived and practiced in Brisbane prior to moving to New York in 2015.
Hendry's practice started as a hobby. She has no formal art training and considers herself "not very creative. Her works are primarily hyper-realistic, large scale ink drawings of luxury objects that sometimes take 200 hours to complete. Working with ink on paper her pieces are achieved through layers of what she refers to as scribbles. She uses photographs with edited saturated lighting, a ruler and a pen as a guide for their placement. Hendry credits her fame to social media attributing her first sale in 2014, a depiction of RM Williams boots that sold for $10,000, to Instagram.
In 2016 Hendry expanded her practice with the launch of a collaboration with fashion house Christian Louboutin. The resulting exhibition, held in the Anita Chan Lia-ling Gallery at the Fringe Club in Hong Kong as part of the 2017 Art Basel marked Hendry's first time working with colour and wax pencil. The difference, the artist explains, is that "colour is very difficult, because you've got to use multiple different colours to create one.

Artist Question: Why Are Sketchbooks
Important?
1. Sketchbooks are raw, convenient and quick thought provokers.
2. Your first idea is rarely the best but you won’t know this until you explore others - so sketch it out!
3. Sketching helps separate concepts from details
4. Sketching is fun & can reduce stress! When you stop worrying and allow your ideas to evolve, you will discover how enjoyable it is to sketch
5. In case you prefer hard evidence… ever heard of Walt Disney, Lewis & Clark, Steve Jobs, Charles Darwin, Charlotte Bronte, President George Washington, J.k. Rowling or John Lasseter? They’re just a sampling of people who kept/keep regular sketchbooks, and well, have done some pretty amazingly-creative things!
6. You also cannot help but develop your own style in your sketchbook. This is where you will develop your own unique artistic style – and that is always exciting!
