Wheelchairs For Kids

Over the past four years, the College has been working in partnership with Wheelchairs for Kids. Wheelchairs For Kids (WFK) is an organisation whose mission is to manufacture and distribute wheelchairs to some of the millions of severely disabled children in under-resourced countries around the world.

These children desperately need a wheelchair to provide them with the means to raise them off the ground from where they are presently confined, and gain a new level of freedom, mobility and dignity. WFK is made up of a group of retired volunteers with no paid staff. It is financed entirely from funds donated by members of the community, many different philanthropic individuals, businesses, clubs, schools, and government bodies. Approximately 340 wheelchairs are produced every month (approximately 3550 per year) and they are then subsequently distributed worldwide to children in need. Over the past 21 years that WFK has been operating, over 45,000 children have received chairs that will change their lives. These wheelchairs are locally designed specifically to conform with World Health Organisation guidelines. They are built specially for rough terrain, adjustable for the child’s size, with postural supports, head rest, harness, a waterproof cushion, tray, tool kit, plus a knee rug, and a knitted toy. On delivery of the chairs to the receiving sites, agency and hospital personnel, therapists and individuals are involved in providing therapy in the field to ensure each wheelchair is correctly adjusted and fitted to the receiving child to ensure they are comfortable in their new chair. For every $200 donated in support of the WFK program, a child gains a new wheelchair, giving them a new experience of freedom of mobility for the first time in their life, allowing them to go to school again, be a part of the community, which also eases the burden for personal carers. Over the four years of our partnership, numerous students from Year 10 and many staff have gone to the WFK workshop in Wangara and have worked alongside the volunteers, building and constructing the different components of the wheelchairs. For our students and staff who have had the privilege of spending time at the workshop, it is a heart-warming experience that leaves a lasting impact. It is the realisation that they have just played a part in something much bigger than tightening a screw, drilling a hole or bending some metal, they have had a first-hand role in changing a child’s life forever. Through our Harmony Day celebrations earlier this year, students were encouraged to come to school dressed in cultural dress for a gold coin donation. The College was able to proudly present Br Olly, Beppie and the team at WFK, a cheque for $2,000. This will go a long way to make permanent changes for many children and their families around the world. Miss Cherie Milne Campus Ministry

Year 7 Zoo Excursion

On Friday, 6th September, our Year 7 students visited Perth Zoo as part of the Year 7 Biological Science Course of study. During the course of the day, students had time to explore the zoo and work on activities relevant to their class work. Students attended a seminar Fantastic Beasts and How To Name Them, which gave them further insight into why classification is an essential tool for animal conservation. This was highlighted through a variety of practical and interactive examples. The excursion was successful and informative, providing students with insight into the various levels of taxonomy. Social Justice Sunday A Message from our Bishops concerning our engagement with the Digital World Social Justice Sunday falls on the last Sunday of September each year. This year, Sunday, 29th September marks Social Justice Sunday when our Bishops issue a major Social Justice statement for the coming year.

The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement for 2019 – 2020, Making it Real: Genuine human encounter in our digital world, affirms the positive possibilities for encounter and solidarity offered by new digital media, while warning of those elements of our digital world that may be harmful. The Statement reminds us that the new digital media cannot be seen as neutral or ‘unaffected by any moral considerations’. While many users do not realise it, the core business of social media platforms is to sell advertising and maximise profits. People’s personal lives may be reduced to data that is traded for profit or power, and it is used to target and influence us in ways previously unthinkable. The Statement amplifies Pope Francis’ call to ‘boldly become citizens of the digital world’, with the image of the Good Samaritan for inspiration. We are called not only to love our neighbour, but to bring the love of God to the new global neighbourhood. The Statement points out that we are called not just to be inhabitants of this new digital world, but active citizens shaping it. All of us, whether we are users, communities, industrial or political leaders have a role to play in rejecting hatred, divisions and falsehoods. We have a duty to foster a neighbourhood that promotes those human attributes and social values that lend themselves to genuine human encounter, love, understanding, beauty, goodness, truth and trustworthiness, joy and hope.
