valley artists know Mark Nowlin as their source for paint, brushes, canvases and other art supplies at The Master’s Studio. For this exhibition, they – and the rest of us, too – will get to know him a little more with a collection of recent drawings, paintings and “constructions.”

His paintings include bright figurative forms in primary colors that have been abstracted to represent movement and music. In addition to regularly attending Wednesday night drawing sessions at the Center for the Arts, he also has been observing dancers at Dancers’ Workshop. “Then I try to get those gestures down.” he said.

Pondering the line – that most basic unit in art-making – Nowlin’s mind took him to writing and the differences and similarities between the artist’s line and the writer’s line. Covering a large sheet of watercolor paper with lines of written words, he then left it out in the rain, obliterating the words but achieving a different type of communicativeness that is just as legible.

Most striking are his “constructions,” three-dimensional collages that bring to mind Duchamp, Johns and American avant-garde sculptor Joseph Cornell. “The constructions I’ve been thinking about for the last couple of decades,” he said.

The heads of barbie dolls are replaced by weathered elk vertebrae for a macabre but humorous juxtaposition of the socially packed and naturally simple. A work of 18th-century music is seen through a rack of glass test tubes, for one view of the classics through the lens of modern science. The rack of a deer is attached to a beautiful antique sewing machine for a provocative mounted specimen. Old and new, nature and science, the mundane and the sublime converse within Nowlin’s glass cases, and by extension speak to viewers.

Special thanks to Richard Anderson from the Center for the Arts for allowing us to use portions of his interview with Mark Nowlin.

Clothing functions not only to protect the body, it concerns all the relationships of person to body and body to society. It is a bridge between our private and public spaces. Larger Than Life examines clothing as a sculptural medium to address and expand the ways in which clothing helps us inhabit the world. In this realm garments become exoskeletons and sculptural shelters that offer protection, exuberance and a new way to inhabit our evolving environments.
