Antonia: Wecantalkalittlebitaboutpeoplesimpressionofwhatintuitionis,becausetheresprettymuchnothingbut

nonspecificinformationoutthere.Ilookedupabunchof

definitionsaboutintuitionnottoolongago,andIcouldntfind

anythingthatwasspecificatall.Alotofpeoplesaiditwasa

sixthsense,agutfeeling.Somepeoplebelieveitsa

supernaturalvoicethatstalkingtoyou.Theresaloton

womensintuitionormothersintuition,soitalmostfeelslike

itsgenderspecificinthatcase.Somepeoplefeelthatitsjust

anudgeinyourmind,whichkindofsoundslikeagutfeelingtoo,butthatsalittlemorewithyourunconsciousmindis

talkingtoyou.

Somepeoplefeelthatintuitionisjustliketheuniversetelling

youorlettingyouknowwhensomethingbadisaboutto

happen.IrememberastoryIheardaboutagirlwhohadbeen

ahairsbreathawayfrombeingoneofTedBundysvictims.

Shesaidthatshewasapproachedbyhimatacollege,which

wassortofhisMO,wastopretendlikehewascrippledsomehow,putanarmbraceonandaskagirltotakehisbooks

tohiscarforhim,asifhewasastudenthimself.Thenhe

wouldclobberthemovertheheadwithhisbrace,andthat

washowhecapturedwomen.

Shesaidthatasshewalkeduptohiscar,somethingjustdidnt

feelrightaboutit.Shedroppedhisbooks,mumbled,Im

sorry,andranaway.Shesaidshefelthorribleaboutitfor

years,thatshehadbeensoawfultothiscrippledguy.Years

laterwhenshesawhisfaceonthenews,thatthatmanhad

beenaserialkillerandrapistofwomen,sherealizedthatshe

hadcomethatclosetobeingonehisvictims.Somethingjust

didntfeelright.ShefeltthatitwasGodprotectingher.In

thatcase,sheattributedherintuitiontoessentiallyGodorthe

universewarningherfromabadsituation.Thatspretty

common,aprettycommondefinitionofwhatintuitionis.

Host: Yeah.IrememberMarkVictorHansen,whosoneofthe

authorsofChickenSoupfortheSoul,hewassortofa

protgofBuckminsterFuller.BuckminsterFullerwasoneof

hismentors.HewastravelingwithBuckminsterFullerandthey

gotonaplaneandBuckysaid,Letsgetoffthisplane.They

did,andlaterontheyfoundoutthattheplanethattheyhad

beenoncrashed.Onsomelevel,BuckminsterFuller,itsounds

like,hadsomekindofaninklingthattherewasareasontoget

offtheplane.

Thosearesomefascinatingexplanationsofwhatintuitionis.

Theresalotofstuffouttherethatsoundsprobablypretty

unlikely,likeitsmorelikelysortofcognitivebiasishappening.

Whatareweistherearealcomponenttoit?Isitalljust

cognitivebias?Whatisgoingon?

Antonia: Yeah.Addressingwhetherornotitsacognitivebiasispretty

importantaswell.Becausesomepeoplearereallyputoffby

theconceptofintuition,basedontheirbelievingitsjust

confirmationbias.Really,somepeoplefeelitsjustanexcusetobeprejudiced.Ifyouhaveanintuitionaboutsomebody

andthenitendsupyouwererightbecausetheygaveyou

evidence,andyoucanpointandgo,Seethere?Rightthere.

ThatshowIknew.Thenitjustlookslike,Wasthattruly

intuitionoristhatjustyouretrospectivelyorretroactively

confirmingwhateveryourbiasoriginallywas?

Tofollowwiththat,anexcusetobeprejudice,itcouldalso

looklikejustanexcusetobejudgmentalaswell.

Host: Right.Nowletsgetintosomeofthescience.Iknowyouguys

areveryscientificaboutthisandopen-minded,butnotso

open-mindedthatyourbrainsfallout.Whatsthereal

intuition?Whatisitthatweretalkingabouthereinthe

contextofthiscall?Howdoyouguysdefineintuition?

Camronn: Inareallybasicwayorbasicallytostatethis,intuitionissimply

sophisticatedpatternrecognition.Theprocessthatyourmind

usestorecognizepatternsinthiswaywaskindofidentifiedbyCarlJungwhenhewasdoingsomeofhisworkon

psychologicaltypes.Heidentifiedacoupletypesthatused

somethingthathecalledintuitionandotherresearchersafter

himhaveconfirmedhisobservations,andkindofincreased

thespecificityofthedescription.

Thethingis,itispatternrecognition,butthepattern

recognitionprocessishappeninginyourunconsciousmind.

Somepartofyourbrainislookingatallthisinformationinacoupledifferentsourcesandcollatingittogether,finding

patterns,findingconnections.Yourenotawareofanyofthat

goingon.

Whathappensisthatonceyourunconsciousreachesa

conclusionofsomekind,itjustpassesthatconclusiontoyour

consciousmind.Allyouhaveistheanswer.Youdonthave

anyoftheprocessing,thelogicaldeductionandsoonthattells

youhowyougotthatanswer.Itsreallyveryunderstandable

thatpeoplewouldascribesomesortofmysticalsignificanceto

theseflashesofinsightthattheyregettingfromseemingly

nowhere.

Antonia: Youcouldreallyseehowthissprungupovertime.Inthepast,

whentherewerealotofpredatorsaround,whenwehadwe

reallylivedinthatfightorflight?Fightorfreezemechanism.

Therewego.Whentherewerealotofpredatorsaround,you

didntreallyhavetimetostopandgo,Oh,thatgrasslooks

likeitsmusheddownthere,insortofthissemithismany

inchespattern,anditlookslikeitsortoffollowedhowmany

everfeet.Thatmightbesomethingthatcrunchedthatgrass,

andthereforeitmightbeananimalthatsaroundthatmight

bewantingtomunchmeaswell.

Ifyougotagutreflexiveintuitionbasedonpattern

recognition,yousawthatmunchedgrass,yousawthatthings

werejustalittleoff,havingthatinstantknowledgethatyour

subconsciouscollatedandsenttoyourconsciousmindwasa

lifesaver,originally.Itmakescompleteandtotalsensethatour

mindswouldhavedevelopedthismechanismtogetusoutof

badsituationsquickly.

Overtime,however,weapplyittodifferentsituations.Were

nolongerinasituationwherewereconstantlydealingwith

predatorsofthatsort,butwedealwithallsortsofother

situations.Situationswherehavingthatinstantinformationis

justaspowerful,justasimportant.Intuitioncomingfromthat

placemakesalotofsense.

consciousmindandmaybetheinputcomingfromyourfive

sensesisliketakingitsbundlingupaquestionintoa

package,likeaFedExpackage,andthenitsshippingitoffto

yourunconsciousmind.Yourunconsciousmindisworkingout

theanswerandthenitshipsbackthepackagewiththeanswer

init,andthereitiswiththeniceprettylittlebowonitbutyou

didntreallyseewhatwentintotheformationofthat.Isthataccurate?

Camronn: Itsagooddescription.Theresactuallytwodifferentkindsof

intuitionthathavebeenidentified,andthatsareallygood

descriptionofoneofthekinds.Theotherismoregeared

towardsrecognizingpatternsemerginginrealtime,andthat

basicallythetwodifferenttypesofIntuitionareExtraverted

andIntroverted,orinotherwords,directedoutwardsor

directedinwards.

ThekindthatsdirectedoutwardswerefertoasExploration,

becauseitsverypossibilitiesoriented.Basicallyitsyour

unconsciousgaugingpatternsthatareemerginginrealtimeas

theyrehappeningaroundyou,havingthatoutward

observation.TheIntrovertedkind,calledPerspectives,thats

moreaboutgaininginsightandperceivinginnerpatterns,

thingsgoingoninyourownmindandinsidethemindof

othersbyproxy.

ThedescriptionoftheFedExpackage,essentiallyaskinga

questionofyourownconscious,thatsmorehowthe

Introvertedversionworks,howPerspectivesworks.

Explorationdoesntreallygiveyouthatlagtime,becauseit

happensrightaway.Theresnobackandforthprocess.Its

just,Hereswhatsgoingon.IdontknowhowIknowit,Ijust

knowit.

Antonia: Right,andsoobviouslyaformofintuitionthatismore

outwardlydemonstrated,thatextravertedform,thatsgoing

tolookbehaviorallyverydifferentthantheIntrovertedor

inwardform.Whenyoureexpressingextravertedintuition,or

asCamronnsaid,wecallitExploration,generallywhatthatis,

isyourepushingalotofbuttonsinlife.Youretryingtofigure

outthepatternofhowsomethingworkswhileitsactually

happening.Thatmeansalotoftesting,alotoftoggleswitches,

alotofbuttonpushing.

Thiscouldbeinpeople,youretryingtofigureouthow

somebodyticks.Youkindofpushtheirbuttonsalittlebit,just

toseehowtheyrespond.Astheyrespond,youreimmediately

takinginthepatternofwhotheyare,oftheirbehavior.

ExtravertedIntuitionorExplorationlooksveryalmost

mischievoussometimes,butitsatestiterateprocessonthe

outsideworld.

TheIntrovertedIntuitiontype,thetypethatyouguyscalled

theFedExpackagethatyousendtoyourunconsciousmind

anditgivesyousomeinformationandshootstheanswerback

toyouinanicelittlepackage,thatsmorethoughtfuland

contemplative.Itgoesinward,sothatsusuallyaquiettime.

Thatsatimewhenyougoinsideyourmindandbasicallyallow

yourunconsciousmindtomakethoseorformthosepatterns

foryou.Behaviorally,thetwolookverydifferent.

Camronn: Yeah.WhatImabouttosayisalittlebeyondthescopeofthis

call,butthereareactuallyatotalofeightmentalprocesses

thatpeopleuse.Intuition,bothformsaretwoofthose

processes.Oftheeight,though,theextravertedformof

intuitionisthequickestthoughtprocessthatpeoplehave

accessto.TheIntrovertedversionisobviouslyhasbenefitsas

well,butitdoesoperatealotslower.

Host: Okay,soyouguyshavementionedpeoplewhohaveintuition

asastrength.Iguesspeoplewhohaveintuitionasastrength,

wewouldrefertothoseasIntuitives.Whatpercentofthepopulationarewetalkingaboutandwhatdoesitmeanwhen

somebodydoesnthaveintuitionasastrength?

Antonia: Peoplewhoarehighlyintuitivemakeupapproximately25

percentofthepopulation.Whatwemeanbyhighlyintuitiveis

wemeanthattheyeitherleadwithintuition,thismental

process,itssomethingtheyreusingallthetime.Itstheir

primarywayofinteractionwiththeworld,ortheyreguidedby

it.Itssomethingthattheyreferencealotforinformation.

Peoplewhoareeitherleadingwithintuition,eitherform,

eithertheextravertedortheIntrovertedform,orareguided

byeitherofthoseformsofintuition,makeaverysmall

percentageofthepopulation,only25percent.Nowthat

soundsprettyhigh,butreallywhenyourelookingatjusttwo

differentstylesandsotheotherstylewouldbeafull75

percentofthepopulation,that25percentisrelativelysmall.

Goingintothatother75percent,howdotheydoit,right?If

that25percentisdoingitthroughthatpatternrecognition

software,mentalsoftware,howistheother75percentdoing

it?Theyrebasicallytakinginformationinthroughverifiable,

concreteinformation.

Theydothatthroughtheirfivesenses.Theytakein

informationthattheyknowtheycanrelyupon.Theyrenot

allowingtheirmindtojustsortofcomeupwithananswer.

Thatsnotasreliabletothemasknowingwhatsactually

happeningintheworld.Theyarefarmorecomfortableusing

theirfivesenseandcollatingtheinformationtheirfivesenses

givethem,asopposedtodefaultingtothatIntuitive

preference.

Camronn: Right.Anotherwaytoputitiseveryonegetsthoseflashesof

insightfromtimetotime.Peoplethathavedeveloped

intuitionasastrength,that25percentofthepopulation,

theyretheonesthat,toalargedegree,trustandcultivatethoseflashesofinsight.Theother75percentofthe

populationdoesgetthemfromtimetotime,buttheydont

knowwherethisinformationiscomingfromsotheydont

trustit,forunderstandablereasons.Tothemitsreally

importanttobesolidinwhatyouknow,andtoknowhowyou

arrivedatyourconclusions.

Insteadofpayingattentiontotheseinsights,theyignorethem

andtherebydontbuildthatstrengthup,dontbuildupthatability.Instead,theyfocusonwhattheycandirectlyobserve

withtheirsenses.Bothstrategieshaveenormousadvantages

andoneisnotbetterthantheother,butitleadstotwovery

differentkindsofpeople.

strength.Inasense,itsoundsliketheother75percentare

reallyfocusingonthefivesenses,andthatstheirstrength.

Youcouldsaythatintuition,inasense,isasixthsense,which

Now,whethertheyleadwiththatExtravertedIntuitionortheIntrovertedIntuition,thatmakesadifference.Iftheyhavea

preferenceforExtravertedIntuition,thentheyneedtobe

doingthatkindofactivityinorderfortheirbraintolightup,

andviceversa.

ItsjusttheoppositewithpeoplewhohaveaSensory

preference,whorelyontheirfivesenses.Whenyouhook

wheretheyarethinkingaboutthepastorthinkingabout

contentment.Thatsreallyatalent,especiallyifyourecoming

fromanIntuitiveperspective,andthisisoneofthemajor

contrastsbetweenthetwo.

Whataresomeotherwaysthatsomeonemightknowthat

theyreormightbeabletotelliftheyreanIntuitive?

Camronn: Intuitivesokay,actually,letmesaythisadifferentway.

SensorsandIntuitivestendtohavedifferentnatural

communicationstyles.Imeanverydifferent.Intuitivesspeak

inabstractionsandpatternsandprincipals.Sensorstendto

talkinconcretesandspecifics,andaboutrealities.Everyone

hasthecapacitytotalkaboutboth,ofcourse,butweallhave

astrongpreferenceforoneortheother.

SinceSensorsaresuchanenormousmajorityofthe

population,mostIntuitiveshavelearnedhowtospeakin

Sensorytermsandtheyhavetodoitthebulkofthetimein

theworldwhentheyreinteractingwithothers.Theyrehavingtokindofspeakintheseconcretespecifics,andit

doesntfeelnaturaltothem.Itfeelsunnatural.

OneofthecommonexperiencesthatIntuitiveshaveisthat

theyfeelliketheyknowthepeoplearoundthemquitewell,

Theyreprobablynotawareofthat.SayImanIntuitiveandI

havethisgroupoffriends.ImightfeellikeIknowthemvery

well,butImightfeelliketheydontknowmethatwellatall.

Antonia: Yeah.Anexcellentillustrationafriendofourscameupwithis

thatitslikebeingleft-handedinaright-handedworld.Youre

apersonjustlikeeverybodyelseisaperson,butyouvegot

thismanualdifferencethatmakeseverythingjustalittle

different.Ifyourealeft-handerandyouveevertriedtouse

right-handedscissors,itjustdoesntwork.Ifyouhavetriedto

useacanopenerandyoureleft-handed,aright-handedcan

opener,itsjustreallycomplicatedanddifficult.Youlearnto

sortoffigureitout.Youlearntotrytomakeyourselfalittle

ambidextrous,butyouknowyoustillhaveapreferencefor

left-handedness.

Sincethenumbersareprettymuchkindofthesame,theresa

muchsmallerpercentageofleft-handedpeoplethanright-

handed,itsreallyanaptillustrationforshowinghowIntuitives

basicallylearntosortofbeambidextrouswhenitcomesto

thatSensor-Intuitivesplitbuttheyalways,always,alwayshave

apreferenceforintuition.Ifaleft-handedpersonrunsintoapairofleft-handedscissors,thereliefispalpable.Theyrelike,

Oh,mygosh.ImsogladthatIhaveleft-handedscissorsandI

canactuallycutandIdonthavetostruggle.

WhenIntuitivesmeetanotherIntuitive,thatsthesamesense

ofreliefthattheyget,becausenowtheycanspeakintheir

language.Theycanspeakinabstractionsandideas,andthey

knowtheotherpersonwillbasicallyunderstandwheretheyre

comingfrom.

Becauseofthatkindofcommunicationdifference,the

experienceIntuitiveshaveisthattheyfeelthatandthey

betterthanthepeoplearoundthemknowtheindividual,

becausetheyvelearnedhowtotranslatebecausetheyvehad

to.WhereastheSensorshaventlearnedhowtospeakinan

prettymuchalwayshavesomeonearoundthatspeaksinthe

waytheyunderstand.

Antonia: Right,exactly.Yougetalittlekindofmentallyambidextrous,

butyoustilldefinitelyhaveapreference.Weweretalking

aboutsomeoftheparallels.Whatdoesthatmean,aleft-

handedpersonislikeanIntuitiveperson?Iusetheexampleof

scissors,canopeners.Theyhadaveryhilariousbitongravy

ladles,howthespoutisalwaysonthewrongside,soyouend

uppouringgravyalloveryouifyoureleft-handedandyoure

usingaright-handedgravyladle.

SomeoftheparallelsforIntuitivesisthatIntuitives,when

theyreonajob,assoonastheyvemasteredtheirjobtheyre

bored.Nowtheywantsomethingelse.Whereasmostpeople,

oncetheyvemasteredtheirjob,theyrerelievedbecausenow

theycandoitreallyefficientlyandeffectively.Butforan

Intuitive,thesecondtheymasterit,itsoverandnowthey

wantsomethingelsetomaster.Itsamajor,majorbedrockof

theIntuitivepersonalitytype.

Intuitivesarealwayslookingforsomethingnew,insteadof

stickingwithwhatworks,whichseemssortofcounter-intuitive

butitsverymuchapartofthatrestlessnessinwantingtofind

thenextbestthing.Theytendtoapproachlifeasan

experiment.Itsallatestiterateprocess.Itfeelslike,when

theyreseekingadvice,mostotherpeoplesadvicedoesnt

seemtoreallyworkforthem.

Thosearesomeoftheparallels.IfyouareanIntuitive,thatis

MostIntuitivesfeelliketheydontreallyhaveachoice.They

havetolivethattemplatetypelife,andtheygetalotof

downandhavingkids?Or,Itstimetogrowup.Itstimefor

tendtodescribeitisitwouldbethebestsummerever.Then

itwouldallbeover,becausewewouldnothavepreparedfor

thewinter,wewouldnothavedoneanythingtokeepthe

currentmachinerunning.Wedbuildanewmachineandwed

keepbuilding.Wedkeepreinventingthemachine,andit

wouldneverhaveanopportunitytostabilizebecauseits

constantlymorphingintosomethingelse.

cross-pollinating.Theywerementoringeachother.They

havetheIntrovertedversionofintuitionasastrengthhavea
