Lot: 292Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887-1972)Mother signed lower right inBengali gouache on card 38 x20cm (15 x 8in) Provenance:The Hanbury family since 1959and by descent. Born into amiddle-class family of land-owners in the village of Beliatore,Bankura, Bengal. Jamini Roystudied at the GovernmentSchool of Art in Calcutta. He wastaught to paint in the prevailingacademic tradition of drawingClassical nudes and painting inoils and in 1908 received hisDiploma in Fine Art. However, hesoon realised that he needed todraw inspiration, not fromWestern traditions, but from hisown native culture. To do this helooked to the living folk and tribalart for inspiration to produce hisunique style. In 'Mother', Royuses bold sweeping brush-strokes showing the inflence ofthe Kalighat Pat. This new stylewas a reaction against theBengal School and Westerntradition and so it became Roy'sunderlying aim to capture theessence of simplicity embodied inthe life of the folk people. Notonly this, but Roy wanted tomake art accessible to a wider

section of people and to giveIndian art its own identity. Somebelieved Roy's style of paintingwas childish however likePicasso, it was said, Jamini Royhad introduced a new conceptionof form in art that was intrinsicallyIndian and owing nothing to theWest. It is for this reason thatRoy's work can be found in manyprivate and public collectionsaround the world for example theVictoria and Albert Museum inLondon.Estimate: £1,500.00 - £2,500.00

Lot: 349§ Sandra Blow (British, 1925-2006) Brown and White Study(One) acrylic on canvas withapplied hessian 62 x 62cm (24 x24in) Provenance: Privatecollection, Cambridge SandraBlow was born in London inSeptember 1925 an artist andteacher at the Royal College ofArt. It was during the 1950s thatBlow was described as one of thepioneering abstract painters ofher time because she introduceda new expressive informality toBritish art. She did this by usingcheap, discarded materials. In'Brown and White Study (One)'we see her typical application ofunconventional materials with theuse of applied hessian. Othermaterials in her works haveincluded sawdust, sackcloth andplaster alongside paint on hercanvasses. This creates a tactileemphasis on surface and texture. In the 1960s Blow's palettelightened and continued for themajority of the rest of her career. Her use of earthy hues such asbeiges, browns and whiteshelped break down associatedprejudices about abstractpainting to make it seemcommonplace in the London artscene at the time. Her light andinformal abstract compositionscelebrated the purity of the era.Estimate: £2,000.00 - £3,000.00
