Arroyo Seco Junior High School “We lead, others follow”
Seco Gram_______________________________________________________________________ Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! I am excited to be returning to Arroyo Seco as Principal after serving
as Assistant Principal here from 2003-2007. It has been a pleasure meeting many of you during the
registration process and at student drop off and pick-up on the first days of school. Thank you for helping
to make this a smooth and positive opening.
We are very fortunate to welcome Mrs. Fayanne Bakoo as a new Arroyo Seco Assistant Principal. Mrs.
Bakoo has taught math at West Ranch High School and, for the past four years, has served as Assistant
Principal at Rio Norte. Mr. Cliff Miller returns as Assistant Principal. He and Mrs. Bakoo provided
orientation presentations to all students the first two days of school in which they discussed strategies for
success and expectations for Arroyo Seco students.
Thank you to the many parents and family members who assisted with our Registration and PE clothes
distribution. If you have not done so already, please contribute to our Parent Advisory Council (PAC). This
group helps support our school and staff and also provides scholarships to deserving students. Plan to
attend our PAC meetings; we have a variety of engaging topics and speakers lined up. Our first PAC
meeting of the year will be held on September 18th at 12:00 noon in the MPR.
During the professional development days before the start of school, Arroyo Seco staff reviewed data and
collaboratively created school-wide goals in the areas of academic achievement, equity, technology, and
cultural competency. We have accomplished a lot in these areas over the years and we look forward to
continued growth.
Our science teachers worked hard this summer as they participated in training on the Next Generation
Science Standards (NGSS), which are being fully implemented this year. A new component of NGSS is
three-dimensional learning, referring to the integration of Scientific and Engineering Practices, Disciplinary
Core Ideas, and Crosscutting Concepts. Students will benefit from relevant hands-on learning opportunities,
some of which they experienced in preparation for the Solar Eclipse on August 21st.
This year, we will once again hold our exciting Seco Games Fundraiser, in which all students participate in
a full day of fun and competition within our academic teams. Donations raised enable ASB to fund a
variety of activities, including dances and instructional team field trips. Thank you in advance for your
support and stay tuned for more details.
We hope to see many of you attend our Back to School Night on August 31 beginning at 6 pm. This will be
a great opportunity for you to follow your students’ schedules and meet their teachers. The following day,
September 1, we will celebrate Arroyo Seco’s 50th Anniversary from 12:30 to 2:30. Join us for an
opportunity to visit the campus and see a variety of memorabilia from the past 50 years. We will have a
brief program at 1:30 that day to recognize the numerous influential dignitaries who have made Arroyo
Seco the special place that it is.
Thank you for all of your support and especially for sending us such wonderful young people with whom to
work. I look forward to seeing you at the many events we have scheduled throughout the school year.
Dr. Andrew Keyne, Principal Issue Number 1 August, September, October 2017
Counselor’s Corner Welcome Parents to a new school year!
We are here to help your student and you navigate through the ups and downs of junior high. For
many of you, this is the first experience you have had working with a counselor! We are here to
help. Your child's counselor is affiliated with his or her team assignment:
Mrs. Ward – Extreme, Fusion and Viper
Mr. Marshall – Genesis, Revolution and Triumph
Ms. Dielentheis – Aloha, Odyssey and Special Education
One of the many questions parents have is how our credit system works. Each class your child
takes each quarter is worth 2.5 credits. Students earn credits for grades of A, B, C or D. Failing
grades do not earn credits. Fifteen credits are available each quarter and 60 credits are available
each year totaling 120 possible credits. A student is required to earn 107.5 credits by the end of
8th grade to officially promote to high school and participate in the end of the year activities.
Students struggling to earn credits can attend summer school for 10 credits. Intervention classes
may also be available.
Another question frequently asked is how does 8th grade performance affect high school
placement. Eighth grade is a pivotal year and it is extremely important that students do their best.
Students are placed in classes based on classroom performance, grades and teacher
recommendation. Honors classes are available in English, Math and Science. For English, the
majority of students are placed in English 9. Honors English is available for students earning A’s
and completing the letter of intent. Math 8 students will complete their algebra studies in ninth
grade. Students earning A’s in Math 8 and scoring appropriately on the end of the year placement
test, will be placed in Honors Algebra. All other students will be placed in Algebra. Current
Algebra 1A/1B students earning A’s will go to Honors Geometry, students earning B’s or C’s go
to Geometry. Repeating Algebra is recommended for those who struggled with the course.
Science placement is based on performance, teacher recommendation and math placements.
Be sure to take advantage of our parent nights! Counselors will be presenting the “Junior High
Experience” for parents of seventh grade students. Topics include understanding adolescent
behavior, facilitating a sense of independence, and the pros and cons of social media. The
presentation will end with a mini workshop on navigating infinite campus. Because of limited
space, we are asking parents with students on Aloha and Fusion to attend on September 6th.
Parents with students on Extreme and Genesis are asked to attend on September 7th. If you
cannot make the assigned evening, please attend on the alternate evening. Both presentation
begin at 6:30 in Knutson Hall. This presentation is for parents only – students need not attend.
For our parents of eighth grade students, counselors will present “Eighth Grade, High School and
Beyond”. Topics will include the impact of 8th grade in high school placement, an introduction
of the requirements of high school, the A-G requirements needed to apply for a four-year
university and the high school registration process. Again, due to space limitations, we ask that
parents of students on Odyssey and Revolution attend on September 13th. Parents with students
on Viper and Triumph are asked to attend September 14th. Please attend on the alternate date if
your assigned day does not work for you. Both parents and students are welcomed and the
presentations start at 6:30 in Knutson Hall.
We are looking forward to working with you and your child!

From the Attendance Office Now that school is in full swing the Attendance Office would like to remind all our
parents and guardians of a few things that will assist everyone in ensuring that your child
is able to maximize their learning time here at Arroyo Seco.
1) Excuse absences with a quick phone call to the school or a note brought to the
Attendance Office.
2) The easiest way to have your child released from school is to write a note stating
the child’s name, the time you need your child to be released, the reason for the
early release and your signature. Please have your child bring the note to the
attendance office (not the teacher) and he/she will receive a pass and will be
waiting for you in the front office at the designated time.
3) If you cannot write a note, please come to the Attendance Office with a photo I.D.
and we will send a student service to the classroom to get your child.
4) We cannot pull children from the classroom if you call in advance as we have
legal/confidentiality issues and have no way to satisfactorily confirm a parent’s
identity over the phone.
5) Beginning in the fall of 2017, parents will not be allowed to go onto the campus
during nutrition or lunch to look for their children. Please implement #2 so that
your child can have a pass and be waiting for you in the office.
6) After two (2) weeks, “Unverified” absences will become “Unexcused” absences
and may cause your child to be assigned consequences at school. Phoning the
Attendance Office or sending in a note with your child can easily clear these
absences.
7) Remember that school starts at 7:45 AM. Please help us ensure that your child
gets to school on time and is ready to learn!
8) Our automated telephone system will call you if your child has missed two (2) or
more classes and has been marked “Unverified”. Please feel free to call the
Attendance Office if you receive a phone call that you believe is an error. We
would be more than happy to assist you clear up any confusion.
If you have any questions concerning your son’s or daughter’s attendance or need
clarification on any of our attendance policies, please call our attendance technician, June
Higgins at 661-296-0991 x1. She is always happy to assist you!
Health Office Procedures
When a child becomes ill at school, he/she will receive every care and
consideration. A Parent/Guardian will be contacted. With so many students and
little space in the health office we ask for your full cooperation in picking up a
sick child in a reasonable amount of time. We do not have the accommodations for
a child to sit in the health office for an extended period of time, and generally
he/she will need to return to class after approximately 15 minutes. If, however,
a student is deemed quite ill, he/she needs to be picked up as soon as possible. If a
parent/guardian cannot pick up the child, and an emergency contact cannot be
reached, the parent/guardian will need to make arrangements with a relative or
friend, and convey this information to the Health Technician. It is our goal to
maintain the health and safety of every child.
The following guidelines were written as an indicator for a need to send a
student home, or for a student to be kept at home:
Fever: A temperature greater than 100 degrees. Student should be fever free
without medication for 24 hours before return to school.
Upper Respiratory Infection: The student with a cold/cough who show
symptoms of fever, tiredness, irritability, not eating well, or signs of
earache, sore throat, thick, yellowish or green nasal discharge need to be at
home.
Undiagnosed skin conditions that may be contagious.
Diarrhea: Students with watery diarrhea or frequent loose stools.
Nausea/vomiting.
Seizures lasting 3 minutes or longer without intervention and/or are
different than usual.
Communicable Diseases
If a student is suspected of being infected with a communicable disease, (e.g. pink
eye, chickenpox, head lice), a parent/guardian will be notified to pick up their
student from school. If a physician diagnoses your student with a communicable
disease, Arroyo Seco Junior High must be notified immediately.
Medication: Prescribed, and Over the Counter (OTC)
If a student is required to take Prescription Medication or Over the Counter
medications during school hours, a Request for Medication to be Taken at
School form, must be completed by a Physician, and signed by a Parent/Guardian.
Prescribed medication includes over-the-counter and homeopathic medications as
well as vitamins. Only certain prescribed medications may be carried and/or self-
administered by the student. These medications include: auto-injectable
epinephrine, asthma inhalers, and insulin. This form is available on the District
website or from the school Health Office.
The “Request for Medication to be Taken at School” form must accompany the
medication, in its original container, clearly labeled with the student’s full name,
physician’s name and phone number, name of the medication, dosage, schedule,
and date of expiration. Over the Counter medications, such as Tylenol, Advil,
etc., are included in these guidelines as well. It is the Parent/Guardian’s
responsibility to keep track of the dose count and expiration dates, as well as
inform the Health Office Technician of any medication changes. Any student
found with medication at school without the appropriate forms on file in the health
office, will have their medication confiscated, and will be released to a
parent/guardian only.
Physical Education Excuse
All PE Notes MUST be turned into the HEALTH OFFICE as soon as
the student arrives at school. PE notes SHOULD NOT be taken to the PE
teachers/coaches, they MUST be given to the Health Technician.
A parent may write a note excusing a student from PE for one to three
consecutive healing days maximum. If a student is not able to participate
in PE in excess of three consecutive healing days, a note from a physician
is mandatory, showing the duration of time the student cannot participate
in PE. If a student can participate in modified PE, (e.g. walking vs.
running, no upper body, etc.), a note from a physician is mandatory and
must state the duration of the modification.
The use of durable medical equipment for student transport such as
wheelchairs, crutches or scooters, as well as medically necessary cast boots,
braces, etc., during school hours, must be accompanied by a physician’s
note stating the reason and duration of use on school grounds.
Please contact the school Health Office for any questions or concerns you may
have. Thank you for your help in keeping our students healthy!
From the Office
Messages and Deliveries
As stated in the beginning of the school year packet, and the Arroyo Seco
Binder Reminder, the office cannot handle all the requests we receive to
deliver messages to students. Please understand that instructional time will
not be disrupted to deliver messages, lunch money, lunches, PE clothes,
forgotten homework, etc. Fast food and pizza “drop offs” for your child is
discouraged. Fast food and pizza “drop offs” IS NOT permitted for
anyone other than your own child. If it is absolutely necessary for a
student to pick up a delivered item or receive a message, your student will be
summonsed during nutrition, lunch or after school. We do not mean to
sound uncaring, but important lessons on responsibility can be learned by
the child if the parent does not deliver these items to school.
Off-Campus Policy
Arroyo Seco is a closed campus. This means that students may not leave the
campus during the school day without an off-campus pass issued upon the
written request of a parent or guardian. Students are to bring notes to the
Attendance Office (not the teacher) before school, between classes, at
nutrition or lunch to secure off-campus passes. If a note is not sent with the
child, a parent or guardian will need to come into the office with a photo I.D.
to sign their child out of school. Also, because of the time frame and the
disruption caused by late arrivals, we do not encourage parents to take
students off-campus for lunch.
Visitor Passes
All visitors on campus between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:00 pm must
obtain a visitor’s pass from the main office. Please do not go directly to a
classroom before or after school. Check in at the office first. The office
staff will call the teacher to announce your arrival and to see if they are
available. Meetings, study clubs, and other activities are often planned
directly after school.
Congratulations – Teacher of the Year - 2017-2018
The California Department of Education has administered an annual Teacher of the
Year award program since 1972, drawing statewide attention to the achievements
of California teachers and the excellence of California’s teaching profession.
Arroyo Seco has nominated a tenured teacher from our site for consideration of the
William S. Hart District Teacher of the Year.
Some of the considerations when choosing this tenured teacher include:
professional growth, commitment, personal attributes and professional skills.
Please join us in honoring Mrs. Jessica Meraz, Arroyo Seco ASB Advisor and
Exploratory Teacher. Mrs. Meraz was elected Teacher of the Year by our staff for
doing an outstanding job!

*P.E. classes meet in the Gymnasium
Dear Parents and Guests, The staff at Arroyo Seco Jr. High School joins me in extending a warm and sincere welcome to Back-to-School Night to all our parents and guests. You will have an opportunity to meet teachers, learn about our Blue Ribbon school, class requirements, goals and objectives, and get an overall picture of the educational program of which your youngster is a part. Arroyo Seco's principal, Dr. Keyne, will provide a brief general welcome at 6:10 p.m. Beginning at 6:15 p.m., parents will be able to follow their student's class schedule, consisting of six ten-minute periods beginning with the "A" period class. Some teams may have a special schedule or meeting place. Please check with your son or daughter about the locations noted on this flyer in the space provided for his or her schedule. Due to the organization of the evening's events, there is not enough time for teachers to meet personally with parents to discuss individual progress. You may, however, request a teacher or team conference on the sheets provided in each classroom. Also, please make arrangements for the care of your children as this event is for the parents.
Sincerely, Dr. Andrew Keyne Mr. Cliff Miller Mrs. Fayanne Bakoo

PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
2017-2018 MEMBERSHIP
Welcome, Arroyo Seco Families!
The Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is what we like to call PTA-lite! Our goals are similar to
PTA in that we strive to support the students, staff and families at school through
communication, philanthropy and education. However, the only money we collect is a suggested
$10 membership fee. If you can’t donate at registration, feel free to put your donation in an
envelope marked PAC and take it to the ASB office, or bring it to a PAC meeting.
Here are some programs that your donations support at Arroyo Seco:
Eighth Grade Essay Scholarships – Last year we awarded $3700 in scholarships!
PAC Meeting lunches – Some lunches are provided by the culinary students at Seco,
but the food is purchased with PAC money.
Staff Appreciation Week – PAC money is used to show gratitude to the Seco staff for
Back to School and during Teacher Appreciation week.
Holiday gifts – PAC was able to work with the school administration and support a less
fortunate Seco family with donations for holiday gifts and groceries.
At the PAC meetings, we will provide engaging speakers who will help you navigate the
new world of junior high and beyond. Last year’s speakers included an expert on the pros and
cons of social media for teens, Saugus High School counselors to help us figure out how to plan
for high school, college preparedness, plus other relevant topics.
The Arroyo Seco PAC also coordinates volunteers around campus including assisting in the
library, ASB run dances, distributing PE uniforms, helping at the school fundraiser, along with
many other opportunities as they arise. The Eyes and Ears program offers parents a chance to
walk the campus during nutrition and lunch and simply observe and report any suspicious
activity to campus supervisors.
We hope you will be able to support your PAC financially, sign up as a volunteer, and also join
us for our five meetings during the school year! The dates have yet to be determined, but look for
emails from the school, as well as the website.
Thanks so much for your support!!

Welcome back to school! I’m very excited to be starting off a new school year at Arroyo Seco with all of you. This is the beginning of my seventh year here and I must say that time flies when you’re having fun! I’ve included some helpful handouts containing passwords to the useful databases and many other programs we use at school. There is also information about apps that may be helpful to you and your child. Our big Library events that take place throughout the year are the Box Tops drive, book fair, and textbook returns. The book fair will take place in March this year, during the week of Open House. I am also participating in the Ralph’s Community Contribution Program. It would be greatly appreciated if you would enroll your Ralph’s and Food for Less cards and designate Arroyo Seco as the beneficiary. Instructions are on the following pages. I am going to be running a yearlong program “Read Around the World”. I’m eager to see how many books our students can read, and hopefully expand their horizons as they explore different genres and places. Parent volunteers are always welcome! Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if I can be of any assistance. Happy reading! Sarah Goodwin, Teacher Librarian
