Angel Wings - A Growing Problem

Have you seen this Magpie duck in our lakes? His deformed wings are called, “Angel Wings”. The syndrome is acquired in young birds. Due to a high-calorie diet, especially one high in proteins and/or low in vitamin D, vitamin E, and manganese, one or both carpus (wrist) joints are retarded in their development relative to the rest of the wing. One way this can happens is people feeding the birds bread. Bread and other high-carbohydrate food items should never be feed to ducks or other waterfowl.

That the Sierra Verde website also provides useful information and documents for you. You can find items such as meeting minutes, architectural request, HOA contacts and other valuable information to stay connected. http://www.sierraverde.org

Thanks Christina for that tip

That the highest speed limit within Sierra Verde is 25 mph. There are some who like to speed and create unsafe conditions for the rest of us. We have reminders installed on Arrowhead Loop to remind us of just how fast we are really going. We do not want to have someone killed in our community because someone was speeding.

PLEASE SLOW DOWN!

That our greenbelt pathways are approved for bicycle traffic? The original plans for our community were clear

about the pathways and their use, so if you ride a bicycle on the pathways, be courteous and give right-of-way to those of us who are just out walking and getting some fresh air.

That your HOA cannot tow your car if you park it on the street overnight? Your HOA does not have the authority to have your car removed, but the City of Glendale does if the car is abandoned for example. It is still a violation of our CC&R’s for you to park your car on the street during the overnight hours and you will receive a violation for doing so. Please do not park on the street overnight, it could cost you in fines.

You don’t have to wait to get that reminder from the HOA to repaint your home. You can research the approved color pallet, choose a color to your liking, and send in a request to the Architectural Committee for approval. There are homes within our community that are in need of another coat of paint. If your home is getting to that chalky stage, do not wait for that letter, take charge and get ahead of the curve, get your home repainted.

Dog Alert!!! It’s the law dog owners. You must keep your dogs leashed and in control while out in our neighborhood. It’s not just an HOA rule, it’s the law. We have received numerous reports of owners walking their dogs without a leah. Your pet can escape your bonds in many

different ways. Perhaps you’re fetching tennis balls with your dog in the greenbelt area or maybe ordering Girl Scout cookies at your front door when your pet decides it time to dart out into the neighborhood. This happens all of the time, our social media pages are full of lost dog and cat stories. You are ultimately responsible and you can still be cited if your pet decides to bite someone. Within our community, we received a report of a retired couple walking on the pathway in one of our greenbelt areas when a dog escapes a home and bites the wife. She sustained a pretty nasty bite. While she waited at one of the neighborhood playgrounds for her husband to go home to retrieve the family car, to take her to urgent care, she was ridiculed by others walking by telling her this is a private community and that she should leave. This person is our neighbor! Please show some empathy. This could be your spouse, child, or grandchild. In a related incident, one walker approached a dog owner who had their dog off leash. She politely asked the owner to please put their dog on leash because it was the law. That

dog owner got nasty with her, went home and proceeded to belittle her on one of the neighborhood social media apps. We also heard where one dog owner was asked by a person passing by, to put her dog on a leash. She flat out said, “no” - She wasn’t going to do that. When told it was the law she said, “I don’t care”. We get it, you want to exercise your dog, that’s good, your dog needs that but unfortunately the community greenbelt is not the place to play fetch or let your dog run without a leash. It’s against the state law, city law, and HOA rules. If someone gets bit, the dog owner is responsible for all medical bills and perhaps even more. We have people in our community that are afraid to walk the greenbelts due to this increasing dog problem. If you feel that your pet has to run free, take him/her to one of the local dog parks. Here are a few not far from our community.

You may have heard that your HOA is currently in the process of getting bids for new irrigation system pumps and an enclosure to house them along with an acid injection system. The general plan for the building along with our specific requirements for the pumps and associated equipment was forwarded to Coates Irrigation Consultants, Incorporated, who is acting as our general contractor on this project. They have taken our requirements and put them into a consolidated package that is now out to bid with three firms that specialize in this type of construction. The package went out to bid in late January 2020. At this writing we are patiently waiting for the bids to come back. We are still hopeful to get this project completed before the end of April.

The location of the new pump house was initially narrowed down to two locations. One of the locations was going to be attached to and just West of the current maintenance facility which is located just to the right as you enter into the Palomino Community. The other location was going to attach to the maintenance facility and extend that facility to the south another 22 feet. The Board of Directors wisely let the homeowner of the home most affected by the location of the pump station decide on its final location. And, their decision was to have the

maintenance facility extended to the south. (See Photo) The new building will roughly be where the yellow square is and be around 8 feet high.

The current pump house is nothing more than a underground bunker with a pump that feeds our irrigation system. This configuration is lacking in many areas and has become a safety concern because of egress issues. The pumps that we currently use are so old that it has become more and more difficult finding replacement equipment. The last time we lost a pump we had to canvass the country for a replacement, luckily we found one in Southern California.
