Dear Arrowhead Families ~ It is hard to believe that November is already upon us! Unfortunately, that means winter weather is right around the corner as well. Please help us by making sure that your child’s winter gear (boots, hats, gloves, coats, etc…) are labeled with their name so that if they become lost, we can easily return them. We also have a lost and found bin located in the lobby for these items. Please remember that we do go out for recess as long as the temperature and the wind chill are above 20 degrees. I would like to take a moment to congratulate the nearly 30 students who were inducted into the Everyday Math Facts Workshop Hall of Fame this month. These stu- dents completed the advanced levels of the Bronze, Silver or Gold sections. This past week their names were announced over the PA and they received certificates and prizes for their efforts. This program is open to all students grades 2-4 (1 will start in December) and continues each month. It is my hope that we can induct even more students at the start of December. This program can be accessed through your child’s EM Online account. This year, Student Council will once again be holding a collection drive for Copley Community Outreach after Thanksgiving. We will be collecting non-perishable food items, hats and mittens, and toys. More information will be coming home at the end of the month about this project. This month we will conduct our mandatory Safety/Lockdown drill. State law requires that each school in Ohio have an emergency plan in place and practice the procedures for a lockdown once prior to December. We look to hold this drill mid- month in cooperation with local authorities. Finally, please remember that Arrowhead utilizes “Copley Connect,” an email list- serv to send updates on upcoming events. You can subscribe to “Copley Connect” on the Copley-Fairlawn Website. Make sure to select Arrowhead to be included on our email updates. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be the principal at Arrowhead Primary School. I hope that like me, you are thankful for all of our students, teachers and families who work together to make our school such a unique, wonderful place. I am also thankful for all of the support that our community provides to our schools. I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving and safe travels to those of you who are leaving town. News from the Greenhouse Thanks to the dedication of our many greenhouse volun-teers, we are moving right along with our Junior MasterGardener program. In October, our students in grades 1through 4 learned about the different ways that plants propa-gate. Propagation by seed was demonstrated and each childplanted a cutting from some of the Nature Zone plants. Thechildren also learned how botanists classify plants into twomain groups. They took a look at various seeds and leaves tosort plants into these respective groups. Depending on gradelevel, they also took leaf rubbings or sketched leaves to helpidentify them.

In addition to these lessons, the classes that come to thegreenhouse weekly also took care of the upkeep of the peren-nial and vegetable gardens in the Nature Zone. They pulledweeds and cleaned-out the vegetable gardens, getting themready for winter.

Our Kindergarten classes took leaf rubbings and then usedwatercolor paints on the leaves. They discussed how water“wakes up” the watercolors and why the paint did not stick tothe crayon leaf rubbing.

Thank you to all who have sent donations for the green-house. Special thanks to Paula Meeker who donated a blenderthat will be used for various activities. We are still in need of2-litter pop bottles for an upcoming greenhouse project.Kindly please save your bottles, rinse them, remove the label, and send them to school with your child. THANK YOU!

Red Ribbon WeekDrugs Bug Me ~ “Bee” Drug Free!

Our Red Ribbon Week was a huge success! On Monday, the students wore their hats to put a cap on drugs and show theirsupport to be drug free. On Tuesday, students were dressed in a sea of red. A special thanks to our PTA for providing the wonder-ful assembly, Billy Craig “I Love This School.” The students loved it!!! Wednesday was “I’m a jeanius, I won’t do drugs.” Almost

every student wore their blue jeans in support of the day. On Thursday, the students wore team apparel to team up against drugs.Friday was “Say BOO to Drugs” and everyone had their Halloween Parties and parade. Students signed their names on bugs andbees and those were placed in the main hallway to remind students to be drug free. A big thanks to our PTA for all their help

What is PTA Reflections? The Ohio PTA, through National PTA, holds an annual cultural arts program, Reflections. Children in preschool through grade 12 areencouraged to create and submit works of art in six areas: literature, visual arts, photography, dance choreography, film/video andmusical composition. The Reflections program allows PTAs throughout the state to recognize children for their creativity in portrayingyearly themes. Teachers, parents, children and community can get involved in enhancing arts education though the Reflections program.

The Reflections Program is one of the best examples of the PTA’s ability to bring out the best in our youth. PTA strongly supports educa-tion in the arts. The Reflections program is run across the country and uncovers some truly amazing talent. Many of the national finalistshave been from right here in Ohio. As always, we will highlight the best of the best but bear in mind that this program is not about win-ning a contest. It is about creating educational excitement and involvement within our schools between parents, teachers and our kids.

Time is flying by in art class! So far, the students learned about two artists, Vincent van Gogh and Wayne Theibaud. The month of November, the students will be learning about American woman painter Elizabeth Murray and her funcartoonish paintings.

1st graders are learning to draw a sunflower with oil pastel. They are utilizing black construction paper, which createsthe oil pastel to show their colors a bit brighter. We are focusing on composition and details.

2nd graders are also learning to draw a sunflower with oil pastel. Their project involves three parts. First, students aredrawing a sunflower on a white drawing paper, and then creating a background on a separate paper, which was inspiredby Vincent van Gogh. They’ll cut out the sunflower and place it on their fancy background to create almost like a 3-Dsunflower.

3rd graders are creating landscapes inspired by Vincent van Gogh. The students are utilizing a “dash-lines” to createthe oil pastel marks. This project needs much of student’s patience! We learned how our eyes can automatically blendthe colors together.

The students’ artworks are hanging in the hallway. They’ll be going home shortly!

Greetings Parents and Young Artists!

I am so excited to be back at Arrowhead this school year to work with the fourth grade and have truly been enjoyingwatching the student artists’ growth over the past year. In fourth grade, we begin to delve in a bit more with projects thatallow the students to work with a concept and further develop their own imagination and creative skills. Some projectswill be more open ended to allow the students to decide for themselves what they would like to create.

We began our year learning about marbling as a decorative art in book making and we marbled covers for this year’ssketchbooks. Students also created mini self-portraits after learning about how to draw people. The self-portraits aredisplayed in a school mural in the Art room and has each student in the school represented. Fourth graders have alsobeen working on landscape paintings that incorporate perspective and color mixing. We learned about the artist Vincentvan Gogh and incorporated his use of brush strokes and color into the students’ personal paintings. In October, theArtist of the Month was Wayne Theibaud, a pop artist who is often called the “dessert painter.” In his honor, the fourthgrade made covered cupcake jars which they will be glazing and finishing up in early November.

Until next time, keep creating!
