A BRIEF CITY PROFILE

The history of when Surabaya was founded is still vogue, however the municipal government designated that the city was officially established in 1293 by the decision of a Surabaya Mayor, Mr. Suparno, on May 31st 1975 and was written in a decree No. 64/WK/75. Since then, Surabaya's anniversary has always been celebrated every May 31st. The date was taken from the glory of Raden Wijaya who defeated the Mongol-Chinese warriors,

and founded one of the most powerful kingdoms in East Java, the Majapahit Kingdom.

Surabaya, the Indonesia’s second largest city, is located in the north coast of East Java province. As the commercial and industrial region of Java, the people indigenous to the city are commonly addressed as Arek Suroboyo whose natural characters are frank, open, and proud.

Jalan Pahlawan Surabaya

The city is proudly called the “ City of Heroes” for the brave struggle of Arek Suroboyo against the Allied forces during the Surabaya battle on November 10th, in 1945. The bloody battle that lasted for three weeks killed thousands of Indonesians. The Dutch and Allied forces technically won the battle, however, the battle drew International attention on Indonesia’s struggle for independence and showed the world that Indonesians were prepared to fight and die for the independence. Since then, November 10th has become the Heroes’ Day. A Heroes’ Monument and an underground museum were built in the early 1950s by the first president of Indonesia Soekarno to commemorate the bravery of the unknown heroes who died in the battle.

Based on the etymology, Surabaya derives its name from the local folklore of a sura ( a kind of shark ) and a baya ( crocodile ) who fought fiercely- the two entwine to form the letter S behind the Heroes’ Monument. The other origin for the name is the Javanessse phrase Sura ing baya which means ‘brave in the face of danger’. The phrase describes the brave spirit of the arek Suroboyo in resisting the onslaught of Sultan Agung’s troops at the beginning of 17th century, also the fierce struggle of Surabaya people against the Allied forces during the independence battle in 1945. Since 1980s, Surabaya’s industrial and service economy has been booming, giving the city more metropolitan look. Nowadays, Surabaya's population has reached approximately 3 millions people. Surabaya’s ethnic identity is Javanese. However, unlike the Javanese from Yogyakarta and Solo, the Javanese in Surabaya are coastal, marginal, yet still religious. The city has faster pace and more cosmopolitan outlook than the other municipalities and regencies in East Java. Surabaya’s population consists of two major

ethnic groups: Javanese and Madurese from the island of Madura located in the north just across the Java island. In fact, about a third of the population has its roots to Madura. The other seven percent are ethnic Chinese, Arabs, Indians, Jews and Armenians.

Even though Surabaya does not have many pre-packaged tourist attraction, you will be fascinated by the charm and sensual side of the urban life. After the invasion of the Dutch colonialism in the 1900s, the city began to acquire a colonial appearance of large mansions, three-shaded avenues that you can see until today. In contrast, kampungs- small houses in narrow alleys, shopping centers, traditional markets, night entertainment such as clubs, discotheques, pubs, mosques can easily be found throughout the city. The

sound of Adzan for the muslim prayer call is loudly recited from the mosque’s speakers five times a day mingled with the bustled sounds of traffics and drivers’ horn. Through great development of the city and information technology, more young Surabaya people are influenced by the western culture. Therefore, the Surabaya

government takes several efforts to preserve its cultural heritage by holding traditional cultural events such as paint, handicraft exhibitions, dance, traditional music and theatre festivals in Balai Pemuda which is located on Jalan Pemuda. The place in 1907-1945 functioned as “De Simpangsche Societeit”, a luxurious place where the Dutch socialites danced and held parties. Nowadays Balai Pemuda serves as East Java and Surabaya tourist information center, art and culture exhibition center, and wedding halls. Another cultural center for art exhibits and performances is Taman Budaya on Jalan Gentengkali. The building served as the official residence of Surabaya regent until the 1970s. You can see students rehearse traditional dances or play the Javanese Gamelan orchestra in the mornings here.

BUSINESS, SHOPPING, TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Since the Suramadu bridge that connects Surabaya and Madura island was open for public on June 10th in 2009, the economic growth in Surabaya and Madura island has improved significantly through the increased number of trade between Surabaya and Madura. With the new bridge, the business activities between the two regions become easier

and more efficient, this brings more profits to both Surabaya and Madura’s economy. The Suramadu bridge is currently the longest bridge (5438m) in the country and it was built from 2003 to 2009. Furthermore, Surabaya is the center of both manufacturing and export-import including sugar ,coffee, tobacco industries that still serve as the economic center that runs the East Java’s economy.

Shopping in Surabaya is one of favorite activities in leisure time. On the weekends and during school break, malls are filled with youths for various purposes from shopping to business meeting. Surabaya offers the pleasure of shopping to the citizens and tourists through numerous shopping centers such as the largest mall in Surabaya, Tunjungan Plaza on Jalan Basuki Rahmat, Galaxy Mall on Jalan Dharmahusada, Mirota batik and handicraft center on Jalan Sulawesi, and the charm of traditional markets and shops on Jalan Genteng, and Jalan Wonokromo.

As a metropolitan that grew on the coast, Surabaya has strong maritime heritage which is reflected in two historical sites : the Submarine Monument and Jalesveva Jayamahe monument. The Submarine Monument is a Russian-made submarine called Pasopati, which has been converted into a museum in the city center next to Plaza Surabaya. The other magnificent

monument is the great Jalesveva Jayamahe monument, a 60,6 m tall monument of a uniformed navy officer with a sword standing bravely, facing towards the sea that symbolizes the glory of Indonesian navy in sea. Just

like other big cities in developing country, Surabaya also has big

issue on flooding during rainy season. Due to the development of

the city, unfortunately many green lands have become offices,

apartments, houses, malls, and parking lots. This situation creates flood in many areas of the city during the rainy season. The poor management of the city architecture and drainage system make the problem worse, however the flood will shortly drain in couple hours.

CLIMATE

Surabaya is hot and humid. The average temperature is 260C - is + 310C The monsoon starts from November to May, while the dry season covers the remaining five months (June – October). The average high and low temperature in Surabaya is consistent throughout the year with average precipitation approximately 1500 mm per year.

LANGUAGE

Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of Indonesians. People use Bahasa Indonesia to communicate with each other at work, schools, universities, at some homes. As the largest archipelago country in the world, Indonesia consists of hundreds of ethnicities that have their own languages and dialects, therefore, the Surabayanese also have their own language and dialect. As the part of Java Island, Surabayanese speak Javanese language with their own dialect called Suroboyoan. The frankness and earthy manners of Surabayanese are reflected in the dialect that shows equality and directness in speech. The usage of Suroboyoan is less strict than the Central Javanese dialect. The Surabayanese dialect is widely used in local media, such as in local TV called JTV, radio, and traditional drama performance called Ludruk. Because Madura people are part of the community in Surabaya, they also use Madurese language in their daily life. It is generally believed that the Suroboyoan dialect and Madurese language become the language of business in traditional markets, and you will probably get cheaper price when you converse with the merchants or bargain the price in Javanese or Madurese language.

TIME

Indonesia time zone is divided into three time zones: Waktu Indonesia Barat – Western Indonesian Time (WIB), Waktu Indonesia Tengah – Center Indonesia Time( WITA), Waktu Indonesia Timur – Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT). Surabaya follows the Western Indonesian Time (Waktu Indonesia Barat/WIB). If you have to attend formal meetings, please make sure you come on time. When attending informal meeting, Indonesian usually comes 10-15 minutes later than the scheduled time.

HOW TO TO GET THERE AND AROUND

The transportation system consists of land , sea and air transportation that could serve the regional, and international transportation (only air and sea transportation). The types of public transportation in the city are taxi, regional rail ( kereta komuter, city train, bemo, becak, and bus. When you have arrived at Juanda

international airport, to reach Universitas Airlangga campus or anywhere else, the most convenient way is to take taxi at the airport if you do not have private car. The airport is equipped with reliable taxi counters. The first step is you choose the taxi counter, and mention your destination to the officer, and then you pay some money to the officer, not to the driver. The taxi fare that you pay at the taxi counter depends on the distance of your destination. Then the officer will present you with a receipt that you use as your taxi ticket. You may have to pay some charges as you leave the airport such as toll fare. Ask the officer if the taxi fare already includes the toll fare. We recommend that you take Prima Taxi from Juanda Airport.

AIRPLANES

Juanda International Airport is home to domestic and international flights. Most flights going to Eastern part of Indonesia, as well as to Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Japan, China, depart from the airport. Cancelled and delayed flights frequently happen in domestic routes. Please always recheck your flight schedule 1-2 days prior to

There are numerous taxi companies in Surabaya that have new cars . Most of them are equipped with fare meter. However, some taxi drivers prefer not using the Meter. If this happens, you have to bargain the fare with the driver. We recommend that you use the taxi companies below. It is very important that you know the address and Surabaya map. Some taxi drivers in Surabaya do not master the route and often ask the passengers to guide the drivers for direction when you go to private address, but for popular destinations such as hotels, hospitals, malls, the taxi drivers already know the route.

BECAK

Becak is very popular in Asian countries. It is human-powered - tricycle carriage that can carry up to two passengers or three (two adults and one child), and sometimes is used to transport vegetable, fruits, even chickens, or other heavy stuffs from and to traditional markets, hardware shops, and flea markets. Becak is banned on some

major streets such as on Jalan Basuki Rahmat, Jalan Pemuda, Jalan Panglima Sudirman, etc in the city center. However, some becak drivers break this rule. You can take becak within the campus or around neighborhood.

information. It is a good idea to book for tickets or purchase the tickets

several days prior to your departure date. During the peak season of long

holiday such as school break in June or July, the Muslim holiday of Eid Fitri,

New Year, and Christmas, you should book for the tickets 2-3 months prior

to your departure to ensure the availability of the ticket and to avoid

discomfort of long queue at the railway stations. Please purchase tickets at

travel agents or only at official counter at the stations. Be aware of ‘Calo’,

some strangers who sell train tickets for more expensive price to passengers

who desperately need to get tickets to their destinations during the peak

Sometimes when a foreigner asks for the location of money changer in a

mall such as at Tunjungan Plaza to the security officers, some of them

will lead you to unauthorized money changer which is usually a jewelry

shop and they will ask some money after you have your money changed

HOSPITALS

There are many hospitals in Surabaya. However, when you have flu, stomachache, diarrhea, motion sickness due to jetlag or other minor health problems which commonly happen when you just arrive from cold-climate country to tropical country, for your convenience you will prefer going to private practice to big hospitals. Having health insurance is not a must here, in fact most people do not have it, because of the poor management of health insurance companies. Using insurance is considered that a patient is poor therefore, the nurses, doctors do not give immediate help unlike when you are treated on your own expense. It also takes a long time to queue at public hospitals. Listen to your friend’s recommendation for good doctors in Surabaya that open private practice. In Indonesia, doctors work at hospitals or clinics in the morning, and in the afternoon doctors start private practices from 3 pm to 9 pm (the schedule may vary at other doctor ‘s private practices)

RUMAH KOS ( Boarding House )

Rumah kos is some rooms in a house intended for students or employees to rent. Sometimes the host also lives in the house, or it is only managed by the house keeper. Most boarding houses set some etiquettes and curfew at 10 PM. The curfew is different at some boarding houses. Women and

men may visit each other at a boarding house only at the porch of the house or in the living room. Women and men do not stay in the same boarding house unless it is intended for married couple. A room in boarding house has facilities such as a bed, a desk, a shared or a private bath room, a shared kitchen,an AC, and complimentary meal, and drinking water in some houses. You may also bring your own tv, computer, printer with additional charge. The cost to stay at boarding house per month starts from Rp 500,000 to Rp 3,000,000.
