LEARNING IN NUSTHIS YEAR, THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE (NUS) CELEBRATES ITS 110TH YEAR OF FOUNDING TOGETHER WITH SINGAPORE’S 50TH YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE. The University’s history is intertwined with Singapore’s development as a nation, and is marked by a rich tradition of leadership and contribution to country and society.

KENT RIDGE CAMPUSNUS’ main campus since 1980, the sprawling 150-hectare Kent Ridge Campus hosts most of the University’s academic, research and administrative facilities. It is also a bustling hub of student life, with a myriad of student residences, sports facilities and venues for arts and cultural activities.

University Town (UTown) – an extension of the Kent Ridge Campus – introduces the residential college concept of learning and living on campus, a first in Singapore’s higher education landscape. UTown’s design integrates green concepts and offers a host of educational and recreational spaces which encourage interaction, peer learning and personal development.

BUKIT TIMAH CAMPUSThe Bukit Timah Campus houses the Faculty of Law, the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy as well as the Asia Research Institute and East Asian Institute. Marked by its distinctive colonial-style building architecture, its rich history dates back to 1928 when NUS’ predecessor institution, Raffles College, was established.

OUTRAM CAMPUSLocated among many of the nation’s key medical institutions, NUS’ Outram Campus is home to the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore (Duke-NUS). Duke-NUS offers an innovative medical education programme with a distinctive research focus, designed to develop a new generation of medical leaders in research, education and patient care.

Founded in 1905 as a modest medical school with 23 students in Outram, NUS is today widely known for its innovative and rigorous education which has nurtured generations of leaders across industries, professions and sectors in Singapore and beyond.

ASIAN ROOTS, GLOBAL REACH The University’s education is distinguished by its global and Asian outlook. Currently ranked among the world’s top universities, NUS is a research powerhouse with a lively and cosmopolitan community of inquiring minds spread across our 16 schools and 26 university-level research institutes and centres.

RAG AND FLAGA tradition which started in 1958, Rag and Flag is a signature NUS event organised by the NUS Students’ Union, in collaboration with faculty clubs and halls of residence.

The University Health Centre tends to the physical and mental well-being of the NUS community. It consists of three divisions, namely Health Service, Counselling and Psychological Services, and Wellness.

UNIVERSITY SPORTS CENTRECome 2016, a new University Sports Centre will be built opposite the current Ridge View Residences / Ridge View Residential College. This Centre will be a spacious 9,000m2 facility with a covered Olympic-sized swimming pool, sports halls, squash courts, fitness lab and eateries.

As a community, NUS continually finds ways to enhance the environmental sustainability of our campus. We roll out various initiatives throughout the year which promote and reinforce the concept and importance of campus sustainability.

The Office of Environmental Sustainability organised NUS’ inaugural electronic waste (e-waste) recycling drive in 2014 which saw a staggering 34,400 kg of e-waste collected. To promote the recycling of used and unwanted electrical items, the drive comprised of an institution-wide e-waste collection and an awareness-raising event to educate the NUS community about e-waste and the harmful effects of improper disposal. NUS staff and students were encouraged to drop off their e-waste for recycling at the event, which saw a turnout of over 1,500 people.

GIVING BACK

PLASTIC BAG TAX SCHEMEA 10-cent charge per plastic bag was introduced to encourage consumers to switch from using plastic bags to recyclable bags at canteens and bookstores. The tax proceeds go to the NUS Sustainability Fund that supports environmental projects run by NUS students.

PROJECT BOX AND PROJECT TUMBLERIndividuals who bring their reusable takeaway containers and tumblers when they buy food or drinks, will be rewarded with stickers that can be accumulated for discounts for subsequent food or drink purchases.

NUS GIVESAs a student, you can get involved in the many student-driven activities that extend a helping hand to the less fortunate. The annual Flag Day organised by NUSSU raises funds for 20 beneficiaries under Singapore’s Community Chest, benefitting the elderly, children, families and individuals with disabilities. About 6,000 students spend this day seeking donations from the public across the island.

There are many other avenues for students to be part of this culture of giving. The NUS Volunteer Action Committee (NVAC) is a non-profit student volunteer organisation that encourages student initiatives.

Our eco-passion is evident through our students, who are ardent green advocates. The NUS Students Against Violation of the Earth (SAVE) actively promotes environmental awareness and action on campus. Its first-of-its-kind environmental-cum-social clothes recycling campaign seeks to encourage the NUS community to recycle their old and unwanted clothes. Aptly named Green Wardrobes, clothes recycling bins were placed near student residences, and the items collected were recycled in developing countries. Proceeds went to the beneficiaries within the South West Community Development Council, voted for by the students themselves.

THE UNIVERSITY’S UNSTINTING SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE is a tradition established by our pioneering alumni more than a century ago.

Actively driving a range of community projects, including overseas projects in countries such as Cambodia and Vietnam, NVAC is the first student group to be conferred the prestigious President’s Social Service Award as well as Singapore International Foundation Award. Many NUS students also organise independent overseas community projects through clubs and faculties.

University-YMCA (Uni-Y) Singapore, founded in 2005, comprises chapters from NUS, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University.

Uni-Y service clubs all over the world aim to develop and empower youths to be leaders who will impact the local and international communities.

Uni-Y has been conferred the Singapore Youth Award 2014, the country’s highest accolade for youths presented by Singapore’s National Youth Council, which recognises exceptional youngsters who enrich the hearts and souls of the community and bring distinction to the nation.

The University Cultural Centre is a vibrant, innovative performing arts venue for high-quality events that reflect both the rich cultural heritage of Singapore and the best in international arts and entertainment. Spaces for performances and other events include a well-equipped hall, theatre, dance studio, courtyard, as well as function rooms and foyers.

YONG SIEW TOH CONSERVATORY OF MUSICmusic.nus.edu.sg

A joint collaboration with the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, the Conservatory is a focal point for musical activity, exchange and research for Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region.

The Conservatory houses a 600-seat concert hall, sound-proof and temperature controlled studios and practice spaces, a music library, smart classrooms, and one of the largest recording studios in Asia.

Leading international visiting artistes perform and give master classes which constitute part of the Conservatory’s curriculum.

NUS Museum is a comprehensive museum for teaching and research. It focuses on Asian regional art and culture, and seeks to create an enriching experience through its collections and exhibitions. The Museum has over 7,000 artefacts and artworks across four collections.

LEE KONG CHIAN NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMlkcnhm.nus.edu.sg

The new Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum is home to one of the largest collections of Southeast Asian specimens in the region. Three nearly-complete fossil skeletons of sauropod dinosaurs, dug up in Wyoming in the US between 2007 and 2010, are the centrepiece of the new museum’s gallery. Sporting a prehistoric façade that resembles a moss-covered rock, the 8,500-square-metre facility will also serve as a research hub for work on biodiversity with a range of educational programmes.

RIDGE VIEW RESIDENTIAL COLLEGENUS’ first residential college outside of UTown, Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) is an interdisciplinary living-learning programme anchored on the theme of sustainability for first-year undergraduates. RVRC is headed by College Master Prof Adekunle Adeyeye.

MULTIMEDIA HUBEducation Resource Centre, Level 1, University Town

The Multimedia Hub is well-equipped to hone students’ skills in audio-video productions. For video editing, the Presentation Space offers portable lighting systems, high-definition mobile cameras and video editing equipment. The Audio Recording Booth, equipped with video, audio and teleprompter recording facilities, is ideal for voice-over narration or presentation rehearsals. The Visualisation Suite supports audio-video post-production and web content creation.

YUSOF ISHAK HOUSE CommITTucked away in a corner at the Yusof Ishak House is CommIT which offers 45 desktops and printing facilities for students’ use.

THINKLABComputer Centre, Level 3

A joint initiative between Lenovo Singapore and NUS, ThinkLab is an innovative PC lab that boasts 80 fast processing desktops and 23 iMacs. If you want greater efficiency and less downtime, this is the lab to go to.
