FORE.WORD'It has been a matter of personal delight to me to Iearn that Rawal Medherbs Consultants Pvt. Ltd. (RMCPL) is goi ng to in i tiate anannual series of publications on the aromatic plants sector, undoubtedly a rising sector in the world. RMCPL, over the years, hasestablished itself asa well known name when it comes to providing authentic information on the cultivation as well as the trade, regulatory and export facets of this sector.Iconsider it an honour to be invited by Mr. Janak Rawal to pen this foreword forthe first issue of Aroma Green Pages (AGP) 2012 onIndia and France. I have the pleasu re and privi lege of knowing Mr. RawaI personally and am also a privy to his passion of executingtangible work in the realm of aromatic plants and their development, in a very meticulous manner. Not only has he personallyvisited Fragrance and Flavour Development Centre (FFDC),Kannauj twice to understand the production, cultivation and tradeaspects of the aromatic pia nts' sector, but a Iso undertaken trips to France to comprehend the world of rna ny rare plants and thehoary tradition and genesis of their cultivation, development and commercial use. His passion for pia nts, r must admit, leaves mefascinated. It is needless to reiterate the place France holds in perfumery, as the country is rightly known as the 'World Capita I of Perfu mes'.Indeed, France isthe name that spontaneously comes to one's mind whe nth inks of the most exotic perfu rnerv, However, anotherimportant, and no less significant fact is that France happens to be the world's leading country in the production of aromaticplants too, having more than 400 companies producing a vast ra nge of fragrances, flavou rs , perfu meries and essential oils. Franceis, of course, the world's leadi ng producer of lavender.Mr. Rawal and his dedicated team have put in meticulous hard work to amass and assem ble detai led data and information on thearomatic sector, in avery coherent and structured man neroThis issue of Aroma tic Green Pages2012 is atestimony to their efforts.AGP2012, wh ich conta ins exhaustive information of the history andcu Itivation of aromatic pia nts in Franee, the leadi ng name inthe aromatic sector sinee the 17th century, also throws I ight on the fact that India. is one of the major suppliers of aromatic herbsand their al l led products to France.Aspects oftrade have been exte nsively covered in AGP 2012. My sincere suggestion would be to also focus on the acute shortageof aromatic pia nts, especially live plants, as well as crude material, which is a problem being constantly faced by the industry. Inthis rega rd, we wou Id be well-served bya.dopting or learning from the practices of the French industry. The regulatory aspects ofthis trade naturally come to occupy an important role now a days. In this regard, Aromatic Green Pages' sincere and painstakingefforts, I am sure, will playa effective role in bringing both countries together, to know more about each others' relative strength, resou rces, needs and areas of mutual cooperation.I have also learnt that HMCPL is planning its next issue on India, France and Indonesia. A little-known fact about Indonesia, ourSouth-East Asian neighbour, is that it has vast areas of wilderness that are home to the world's second-highest level ofbiodiversity. Richly endowed with natural re so u rc es , Indonesia is renowned th roughout the world for its spices and essential oils, which have been in demand for ages. Knowing Mr. RawaI 's unreserved com mitment to this field of work, I have indeed no doubtthat th is particula r issue of Aromatic Green Pageswou Idbe ami lestonein all respects.Itake this opportu n ity to wish RMCPL and Mr. Rawal the ve.ry best in their coming endeavours and am sure that they sha II continueto set standards of a very high order for the industry as a whole.

AttarA n art of Indian perfumesHistory

The word 'Atta r', 'Ittar' or 'Othr' isbasicallyanArabicword thatmeans 'scent'; this in turn isbelieved to have been derived fromthe Persian word Atr, meaning 'fragrance'. Attar is popularthroughout the Middle East, the Far East,India andPakistan.Attarhas been used throughout the Eastern world for thousands ofyears. These perfumes are 100% pure and natural, and free ofalcohol and synthetic chemicals. Natural perfumes are affordablebecause they are so concentrated that a small bottle wil l 'lastseveralweeks, if not months. Due to the purity and the nature ofoils, there isvery little likelihood of spoilage. Attar has a stableshelf llfe and someAttars becomestronger and smell better whenthey are older.

The story of Indian perfumes is as old as civil ization itself.Archaeological evidence reveals that the earliest inhabitants ofthe Indian subcontinent held plants in great reverence. With thepassage of time, scented oils were extracted by pressing, pulverising or distilling aromatic vegetable and animal produce.Earlyindications of this activity areavailablefrom the perfume jarsandterracotta containers of the IndusVaIleyCivillzatlon, where

The term Sandalwood (Santa/urn album) oil has been appliedat various times to oils from several different sources. Today, almost aU the Sandalwood oil traded internationally is so-calledEast Indian Sandalwood oil.dlstl lled from the heartwood and rootsof Santa/um album. For thousands of years Sandalwood oil hasbeen one of perfumery's most precious items ..It forms the basis ofheavy orienta I compositions, and creates delightful combi nationswith Rose (Gulab), Violet (Banafsha), Tuberose (Rajnigandha),Clove (Laung), Bergamot, Lavender and a lot of other fragrantmaterials.

Freshly distilled sandalwood oil has a wonderful aroma- anextremely soft, sweet-woody and delicately animal-balsamicodour with a base note .It is widely employed in the fragranceindustry, more particularly in the higher-priced perfumes. It hasexcellent blending properties and the presence of a largeproportion of high-boiling constituents in the oil (about 90 percentsantalols) also makes it valuable as a fixative for other fragrances. In India, where it is produced, it is used in this manner for themanufacture of tradit ional attars such as Rose attar; the delicateflora Ioils are dlstl l ied directly into Sandalwood oi I.
