Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children was dedicated just over 25 years ago. Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies opened 10 years ago, and together this combination became Arnold Palmer Medical Center, America’s largest medical center dedicated specifically to children, women and babies. Since the doors opened in 1989, an incredible team of physicians and team members have cared for for more than 1.6 million patients. Advanced technology coupled with compassion and dedication have made Arnold Palmer Medical Center one of the most recognized and trusted names in children’s and women’s healthcare.

When the hospital opened, a commitment was made to Arnold and Winnie Palmer that “good” would never be good enough, and all team members knew that high standards must be met. During this 25-year period, the Arnold Palmer Medical Center has earned a reputation as one of the leading hospitals of its kind in the Southeast and the nation.

Mr. Palmer famously said, “We can do better! We should do better for the children!”

And that’s exactly what happened.

An indication of the Palmer family legacy of caring and continuous improvement is the

consistent ranking by U.S. News & World Report as a “Best Children’s Hospital.” Arnold Palmer Medical Center is currently nationally ranked in seven specialties and is the only children’s hospital in the Greater Orlando area to be recognized. The hospital has also been recognized as a “Top Hospital” by the leading quality standards assessment organization, The Leapfrog Group. These amazing

accomplishments would not have been possible without the dedication

of physicians and team members who care so much for the children of Central

Florida and the generous support of thousands who have given so freely to

help make the longstanding promise of outstanding patient care a reality.

Winnie Palmer Hospital is an extraordinary facility designed to serve the unique healthcare needs of women and babies in a caring, family-centered environment. Every woman is unique and each will have different healthcare needs and concerns throughout their lifetime. This perspective guides decision making daily and was instrumental in developing the foundation of Winnie Palmer Hospital. Totaling 315 beds

and rising eleven stories above our campus, the hospital provides complete women’s care through

all phases of life from obstetrics and high-risk births to advanced gynecological services. Demand

for mother and baby services at Winnie Palmer Hospital continues to climb. During the recent 12-month

period, more than 14,000 babies were born at Winnie Palmer Hospital, maintaining the hospital’s position as having one of

the busiest Labor & Delivery departments in the United States.

Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies

With nearly 10 percent of all newborns born at Winnie Palmer Hospital requiring highly specialized neonatal care, the Alexander Center for Neonatology remains one of the busiest Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in the nation, regularly experiencing patient volumes close to or at than the unit’s capacity of 142 beds. The NICU cares for a significant number of low birth weight babies as well as twins, triplets and other multiples, as they tend to be born earlier and smaller than single birth babies. Babies with medical conditions such as heart problems, infections, or birth defects are also cared for in the NICU. Many babies spend weeks or months in the NICU, requiring highly specialized care to reach typical birth weight. Regardless of the challenges, The Alexander Center for Neonatology achieves outcomes for low birth-weight babies that are among the best in the nation.

The Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families, an extension of the services of Arnold Palmer Medical Center, provides a special kind of dignity and healing for children, families and individuals who face overwhelming challenges like child abuse, sexual trauma, developmental disabilities, and lack of access to medical care. The Howard Phillips Center brings together community partners, including governmental agencies, involved in child welfare to provide a compassionate, coordinated community response to child abuse and neglect in Central Florida by offering a continuum of services from assessment to advocacy and treatment, all at one family-friendly location. This is an extremely important multi-county service because, unfortunately, the number of reported abuse cases in Orange County is among the highest in the state. Multidisciplinary teams include case managers, medical professionals, social workers, psychologists and mental health counselors who assess risk factors and recommend services to protect children and help strengthen families. This unique outreach program of Arnold Palmer Medical Center has a long-standing record of comprehensive care for abused and neglected children in our community.
