How to become a security guard in California
For you to become a security guard in California you should obtain a California guard card. Security
guards are employed by licensed private patrol operators to protect persons or property and prevent
theft.
You should meet the below requirements to be eligible to become a security guard in California
At least 18 years old
Criminal history background check conducted by California Department of Justice and the
Federal Bureau of Investigation
Finish a 40-hour training school conducted by a BSIS approved training school.
Breakup of the 40-hours of training
Prior to Being Assigned on Post - 8 Hours
Training Required within the First 30 Days - 16 Hours
Training Required within the First Six Months - 16 Hours
Use the following steps to complete your application and get a response at the earliest from BSIS.
Complete eight (8) hour "Power to Arrest " training and pass the exam at the end of the
program.
Submit the security guard application online.
Pay fees online $51 (Security Guard Application Fee$50.00 and Online Convenience Fee$1.00)
Submit fingerprints electronically using Live Scan. Fees $49(Department of Justice Fingerprint
Fee$32.00 and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Fee$17.00).
BSIS on receiving all the documents, fingerprinting and background check information will process your
application. Security guards placed on assignment must keep the following documents with them at all
times:
A valid security guard registration or a screen print of BSIS approval from the Bureau's web site
in case the registration card is not available.
A valid photo identification card. The details on the photo ID should match the one on your
guard registration. The photo ID should be a recent one.

You can also opt for a slower processing option by mailing in your documents to BSIS.
BSIS will continue to accept mailed applications:
Submit your completed security guard application with the below documents:
A $50 registration fee
A Security Guard Live Scan form signed by the Live Scan operator, including the ATI number.
A $32 DOJ fingerprint processing fee
A $17 FBI fingerprint processing fee, and Live Scan site processing fee must be paid at the Live
Scan site.
Send your application package to the
Bureau of Security and Investigative Services,
P.O. Box 989002, West Sacramento, CA 95798-9002.
Applications for registration as a security guard can also be obtained from private patrol operators or
training facilities certified by BSIS.
How to be an armed security guard in California?
You are required to have a firearms permit to carry a gun at your security job in the state of California.
BSIS issues the permits after you meet all the requirements to obtain a firearms permit.
Requirements to be an armed security guard in California
You should be a US citizen or have permanent resident card.
Attend a 14-hour (8 hours classroom training and 6 hours range training) training course that
teaches carrying and use of firearms. The training should cover moral and legal aspects, firearms
nomenclature, weapon handling and shooting fundamentals, emergency procedures and range
training. The course must be given by a BSIS certified firearms training instructor at a BSIS
certified training facility.
Written and range exams will be administered at the end of the course. Costs of training are
determined by the training facility, so look around for reviews and compare costs before signing
up.
Submit a firearm permit application, pay the $80 application fee, and submit a Security Guard
Registration w/Firearm Permit Live Scan form.
A $38 Firearm Eligibility application.
A $32 DOJ fingerprint processing fee.

Note: You may apply for both a guard registration and a firearm permit application at the same time to
the Bureau along with a $130 fee.
Note: A firearms qualification card expires two years from the date it was issued. An applicant must re-
qualify four times during the life of the permit: twice during the first year after the date of issuance, and
twice during the second year. Re-qualifications must be at least four months apart.
