Bernie Burns Retires From Drumellan Family Learning CentreSRC would like to acknowledge the work of Bernie Burns who has recently retired from her managing role in Drumellan Family Learning Centre and wishes her every happiness in her retirement.

Bernie has managed the Drumellan Family Learning centre in Brownlow since 1999. She has worked directly with the college to help deliver quality learning programmes and community courses for the local area ranging from childcare, healthcare, computers, cooking, yoga and various crafts classes. As an active member of Drumellan Community Association for over 41 years she has directly been involved in the development of many positive initiatives with SRC and other community organisations, statutory bodies and residents groups.

Bernie says “I will miss working with the college’s community team as they have been very helpful over the years in providing professional accredited learning to local residents. I will also miss working with the tutors who are always first rate and go the extra mile to support the centre and students. I hope the good relationship the college has with the local community through partnering with Drumellan Centre continues long after my retirement.”

Bernie intends to continue her community work but on a much lesser scale to allow her to spend time with her family and pursue her hobby of singing with the Gilford United Artists group.

Bernie will be replaced by the Drumellan centre’s new manager Mandy Rogers who is from the local area. Mandy hopes to build on the endeavours of Bernie and is planning with the college to offer from the centre essential skills classes in ICT, Maths, English; cookery, photography and other short courses.

We wish Bernie well in her retirement.

Dressmaking in CabraCabra Community Hall, outside Rathfriland is host to a well-established Dressmaking class. These are very relaxed, informal classes where individuals are encouraged to work on projects of their own choice. Many new hand-made garments have been modelled at the end of each class which is quite an achievement for those who sign up claiming ‘not even able to sew a button’! The course runs twice per year and new enrolments are always welcomed.

Old Town House in Rathfriland a New SRC Centre of Learning

SRC has commenced classes in Rathfriland at the new Community Hub in the centre of the town. The Hub was established by the Rathfriland & District Regeneration Co Ltd (Rathfriland Regeneration) a registered charity. Initially the Community Hub was a private house and medical surgery before being purchased by the Regeneration Company.

The College works in partnership with the group to deliver classes in City & Guilds Level 1 and 2 Information Technology (computers) and Digital Photography. All college courses are delivered in the centre’s brand new computer suite. The centre is fully furnished and hosts a range of activities for the local community.

Members of the group say they are ‘indebted to Southern Regional College for agreeing to run classes in our Hub and look forward to a long association with them. Indeed, it was only with the backing of SRC that we were able to attract grant aid under the PEACE IV initiative to fit out the Computer Suite with ten state of the art computers and a projector, printer. We are grateful for the assistance provided by the college’s community team whose help and support in getting IT and Digital Photography classes up and running proved a catalyst for others to support us with classes of their own.’

Rathfriland Regeneration and Southern Regional College have put together a learning programme for 2018/19 that will enhance the momentum created so far. This will expand the range of classes and courses available for the benefit of the community in Rathfriland and the surrounding district. Enrolment sessions are planned for September 2018 and these will be advertised in the press in due course.

If you have are interested in attending the new centre or other matters please contact: Jim Cunningham, SRC on M: 077 1198 1732 T: 028 3839 7868 or E: [email protected]

Caroline Coleman and Lesley Hamilton CDO’s SRC; Deputy Mayor Cllr Richard Smart; David Vint, Assistant Director SRC; Amanda Smyth, Enterprise Development Officer NMDDC. Cllr Smart congratulated SRC on securing funding for such a valuable programme and wished them well.

The Prince’s Countryside Fund This year SRC delivered the ASSET programme which was targeted at young farmers in the most vulnerable farm businesses providing them with the training and skills needed to help them secure their businesses for the future.

The aim of the project was to provide accredited training to members of farming families, equipping them with the specific skills required to diversify and create a supplementary income to their current farm business. This would improve the sustainability of the farm by providing and encouraging farmers of the future to remain within the industry particularly at a time when income is at an all-time low right across the agricultural sector.

During Strand 1 of the programme 23 participants enrolled to complete an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 2 Certificate in Enterprise which was delivered over 12 weekly evening sessions in Newry and Armagh Campuses. This course provided accredited business start-up training equipping participants with the know-how to market, develop and manage their new venture. 19 people successfully completed the course which exceeded the original target by almost 27%.

Strand 2 saw participants progress to gain practical qualifications in an agricultural related discipline.

TOPS Craigavon

Our Training and Employment Opportunities Programme (TOPS) continues to be a great success in the Lurgan, Brownlow and Portadown Neighbourhood Renewal Areas (NRAs). This year 80 residents who were unemployed or on low incomes completed training. 70 of the residents achieved industry focused qualifications/licences and 11 of them found employment.

The project is funded by Department for Communities as part of its Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy. A range of courses are offered to meet the specified interests and needs of employers. For example, work focused training in Category C lorry driving, counter balance forklift driving, door security and CCTV operations. A major element of the project is to help residents overcome personal barriers to finding employment such as transport to training, qualifications, licences etc. We also offer Essential Skills qualifications in Literacy, Numeracy and IT.

The aim of the TOPS project is to help participants secure employment. This year Gavin Coogan (pictured above) applied to do Cat C lorry driving to help improve his role in his existing job. Gavin undertook training in Belfast with the Henderson Group achieving CAT C + E driving licence and is now able to test drive all large vehicles to locations for his employer R&G Murphy Haulage based in Newry. Gavin is delighted that his work responsibilities has expanded. Gavin commented that the TOPs project “really helped improving my role in my current job allowing me to drive lorries and test drive large vehicles. This has opened many doors for me. The project offered by SRC provided me with the support to avail of training that is usually quite expensive and difficult to oversee myself. It was a great opportunity!”

The TOPs project’s accredited forklift training with Safetylift in Belfast provided residents with the industry focused RITTB driving licence. This fits in well with the requirements and needs of various large factory based employers in the greater Craigavon area.

As part of the TOPs project residents from Craigavon completed Barista training. This hospitality course provided residents with the professional expertise to prepare and service coffees and other liquid refreshments from all over the world.

The project provided mentoring support to young people engaged in the SRC School Partnership Programme (SPP) and additional targeted mentoring to young people who progress from SPP onto SRC Further Education. In 2017/18 there were 427 young people who live in NRAs involved in occupational studies and other training.

A new project has commenced and is currently recruiting. If interested contact: Jim Cunningham, SRC on M: 077 1198 1732 T: 028 3839 7868 or E: [email protected]

Success for LindaLinda, from Barcroft in Newry, had been unemployed for 9 years, focusing her time on raising her family. She was keen to update her training and skills and enrolled on the Enterprise Firm Programme in September 2016 through which she achieved the Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Award in Enterprise Skills. Recognising the benefit of having formal qualifications in English, Maths and ICT she also enrolled on the 3 Essential Skills courses alongside the BTEC Award.

This was Linda’s first steps back into education and training since leaving school and she found it rewarding.Following her success on the Enterprise Firm progamme Linda returned to SRC as a full time student in September 2017 to study the full-time Level 3 Private Secretary’s Diploma.

This was a one-year intensive programme run over 4 days per week. The Private Secretary’s Diploma is equivalent to 2 A Levels and equips students with the skills needed to work as high level administrators in a modern office environment. It consists of 4 externally marked exams i.e. Business English, Meetings, Text Production and Business Administration. Students who undertake this progamme of study also have two weeks relevant work experience which is invaluable to them to put their skills into practice.

This qualification is highly sought after by local employers and all students are work ready upon completion of the course. In addition, Linda also undertook classes in GCSE English, Maths and the Level 2 in Computerised Bookkeeping and exams are pending.

Linda has said of her experience “I saw community education courses run by Southern Regional College through NRAs advertised in my child’s primary school and local NR community association Facebook pages. I decided to enroll on the Enterprise Firm project to enhance my CV, gain new skills, socialise and to possibly gain employment following a career break to have a family. I enrolled in Essential Skills English, Maths and ICT and achieved Level 2 in all 3. I have also gained a level 2 Award in Enterprise Skills and a World Host qualification in Customer Service. You could say I have caught the learning bug, as I am now approaching the end of my first year enrolled as a full time student in the SRC studying Level 3 Business Administration / Personal Secretary alongside two GCSE’s in Maths and English to enhance the qualifications I achieved through the NR programme”

The GROW Project The Grow project was completed by 22 residents from NR areas in Lurgan and Armagh. This year 19 residents achieved a Level 2 qualification in Horticultural Management.

In March Grow residents visited community allotment projects in Friarstown and Corkagh Park in South Dublin. During the visits there was much discussion and sharing of information on the benefits of gardening and growing your own produce. Focal points included growing organic fruit and vegetables in the community and the benefit to individual’s health and wellbeing though participation in outdoor projects.

Throughout the duration of the GROW project residents have promoted the benefits of the programme within their own local communities. They have shared excess produce with neighbours and discussed the processes involved, helping others to begin growing their own produce. This has further helped promote a healthier lifestyle in their own communities.

Enterprise Firm Programme This project delivered bespoke entrepreneurial and self-employed business management training to 24 economically inactive individuals across the Brownlow, Portadown, Lurgan and Newry NRAs. It helped individuals develop their entrepreneurial skills and taught them how to manage a small business, and then use those skills attained to progress either into self employment or into paid work.

The project set up two Enterprise Firms, which operated from Greenshoots (part of the SRC Campus) Newry and Bluestone Business Park in Craigavon.

Eight residents (4 from Newry & 4 from Craigavon) completed the Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Award in Enterprise Skills through the Enterprise Programme and 7 of them went on to complete the iCQ Level 2 Award in Understanding Customer Service in the Retail Sector. There was 100% achievement in both courses.

A Celebration event took place in the Armagh City Hotel over the summer to celebrate the achievement of residents who participated on SRC’s Neighbourhood Renewal (NR) projects.

The residents achieved qualifications and employment as a result of participating on the programmes in Armagh, Brownlow, Lurgan, Newry and Northwest Portadown.

The projects supported economic training targeted at those harder to reach adults and youth who for many reasons have become disengaged or faced unemployment. SRC was able to offer these projects through special funding provided by the Department for Communities.

In 2017/2018 the projects created 24 jobs and 1 resident returned to full time education in SRC. A total of 202 residents gained industry recognised qualifications and licences. Over 65 residents in Armagh, Craigavon and Newry completed the RTITB Counter Balance Forklift Operator training and are seeking employment in the logistics industry. The projects also assisted 832 Schools Partnership pupils and young people on their school and college programmes of study.

During the presentation of certificates at Armagh City Hotel, the residents received warm congratulations from local council and government representatives, David Vint (SRC Assistant Director Community, Schools’ Partnership and External Funding), Jim Cunningham, Heather Kavanagh and Lesley Hamilton (SRC Community Development Officers).

David Vint, Assistant Director SRC, praised the commitment of the residents on the NR projects and on how admirable it was to see them take on these life changing opportunities.
