Transcript of Armadale Road Upgrade - project.mainroads.wa.gov.au Road... · Construction of the Armadale Road...
Construction of the Armadale Road Upgrade is taking shape, with intersection upgrades at Liddelow Road and Nicholson Road underway.
Major construction at Liddelow Road, the first of three major intersection upgrades as part of the project commenced in February 2018, and will see the existing T-intersection converted to a two lane roundabout, due for completion in late 2019.
Clearing and mulching of vegetation to the south, east and west of the Liddelow Road intersection has been completed, with foundation preparation for the future roundabout underway.
Identifying below-ground services has been a significant task on the project with many water, gas, power and telecommunications services due for relocation outside of the new Armadale Road alignment.

Armadale Road UpgradeTAPPER ROAD TO ANSTEY ROAD
The Metropolitan Road Improvement Alliance (MRIA), on behalf of Main Roads, is upgrading the 6.9 kilometre section of Armadale Road from Tapper Road in Atwell to Anstey Road in Forrestdale, from two lanes to a four lane dual carriageway. The upgrade will alleviate current congestion and enhance road safety.
Construction progress at the intersection of Armadale Road and Liddelow Road, Banjup
The installation of temporary barriers separating traffic from work zones is also in progress. We thank nearby residents for their ongoing patience while these barriers are being installed at night to avoid major disruption of high volume daytime traffic.
Changed traffic conditions
In consultation with the City of Cockburn and local community, the intersection of Armadale Road and Liddelow Road has been modified to left turn movements only, for the safety of road users.
Speed limit reductions are in place across construction zones. Please drive carefully through the area.
No cyclist access on Armadale Road
With steel barriers in place and reduced lane widths to 3.2 metres, cyclists are prohibited from travelling on Armadale Road between Ghostgum Avenue and Anstey Road. This will ensure the safety of cyclists during construction.
This section of Armadale Road will remain closed to cyclists until late 2019, when new cycling and pedestrian facilities will open alongside Armadale Road.
See the Main Roads website for alternative cyclist routes.

New roundabouts at Liddelow Road and Taylor Road/Wright Road intersection will provide safer and more efficient journeys along Armadale Road. The Nicholson Road/Armadale Road intersection will be upgraded to a roundabout with a grade separated bridge for smoother traffic flow in an east-west direction. Minor upgrades will be provided at Ghostgum Avenue, to be maintained as a signalised intersection, and Rossiter Avenue converted to a left in left out only intersection.
Liddelow Road
• Existing T-intersection will be converted to a two lane roundabout with connections to south, west and east
• Provision for a northern leg to the roundabout to be constructed by developers in the future
• A 4 metre wide Principal Shared Path (PSP) be will constructed along the northern side of Armadale Road, shown in grey
Taylor Road/Wright Road
• Existing four-way intersection will be converted to a two lane roundabout
• A 4 metre wide principal shared path (PSP) be will constructed along the northern side of Armadale Road, shown in grey
Nicholson Road
• Existing four-way signalised intersection will be converted to a roundabout
• Four lane bridge (two in each direction) over Nicholson Road will provide free-flowing traffic movement on Armadale Road, with on and off ramps from the roundabout below for connectivity
• A 4 metre wide Principal Shared Path (PSP) be will constructed along the north side of Armadale Road, shown in grey

Key benefits of the Armadale Road Upgrade• provide major safety
improvements by removing a dangerous bottleneck
• reduce travel times on Armadale Road
• deliver a better level of service at intersections
• improve access to new residential developments, Cockburn Train Station, Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre and the Jandakot Industrial Area
• improve amenity for cyclists and pedestrians
• improve a strategic freight route connecting the South West and South East corridors of the Perth Metropolitan Area
• interface with Armadale Road/North Lake Road Bridge project which will complete upgrade to west of Kwinana Freeway
Working with the community
Main Roads and MRIA thanks the community for its patience as we complete this exciting project to significantly improve traffic conditions and road safety along Armadale Road.
We will provide regular construction and traffic updates to the community to minimise disruption.
Construction Reference Group (CRG) formed
A CRG was formed in May to perform an independent advisory and consultative role to MRIA during the design and construction process.
Key stakeholders, community groups and local residents were invited to nominate to be a part of the CRG and work with the project team to provide input on local issues.
Deliberations of the CRG are reported to the community through its members, project newsletters and meeting minutes uploaded to the Main Roads website.
The CRG has held two meetings to date, providing feedback on key parts of the project including:
• Detours for cyclists
• Road safety feedback
• Community engagement and project communications
• Managing connectivity to local roads, businesses and properties during the staging of construction activity

First Armadale Road Upgrade Construction Reference Group meeting, May 2018
The $145 million Armadale Road Upgrade
project is jointly funded by
the Australian ($116m) and
State ($29m) governments.
Road surfacing plan
All new intersections constructed as part of the Armadale Road Upgrade project will be sealed with high quality asphalt.
The remaining sections of the alignment will initially be surfaced with an aggregate spray seal. This is a tough, long life surface, similar to that which is used on rural highways, however, some road users may notice a slight change in road texture when driving through these sections of the project.
Once the road pavement has fully stabilised in approximately two years, the full alignment will be sealed with asphalt. This staged approach will improve the long term performance of the road.
