Dear Armadale Community, OOSHC Halloween Party What a wonderful time all the children had who attended the OOSHC party to celebrate Halloween. therefore we are now in the process of obtaining quotes for these. Parents dropping off lunches or items to children please do it via the office only. We have all forgotten at some point an item for our child or sometimes it is their lunch. Could I ask please that parents drop any items off at the office only rather than make their way directly to the classroom. Thank you for complying with this request Working Bee Saturday 17th November We will be holding our next Working Bee on Saturday 17th November and it will be great to see as many parents and children as possible helping to undertake a multitude of tasks such as weeding of garden beds, pruning of plants, sweeping the sand from the artificial grass in the Prep area, and a general clean and tidy up of our school. Saturday 24th November is State Election and as our school is a Polling Station we are holding a magnificent cake stall and BBQ! All we need is the people power from both adults and children to help with the baking of cakes and then helping out at the stalls. Not only is it a terrific community event but it will be great to seize the opportunity for some extra fundraising whilst the wider community are queuing to vote. Please see the flyer included in this newsletter!! Increased incidence of Dogs in our school yards on the weekends I would be very grateful if members of our community who see dogs in our school grounds over the weekend could remind owners that dogs are not permitted in our grounds. I don’t want our grounds polluted with dog excrement which we are finding on a regular basis. Could I also please request that anyone using our grounds ensures the gates are closed, including the driveway gates after they leave. We are open for learning on Monday but the school will be closed on Tuesday for the Cup day holiday ! Have a wonderful week Warm regards

Rochelle Cukier Principal

Don’t forget Icy Pole Friday We will be selling icy poles at recess this Friday. This week’s flavour is orange and mango. Icy poles are $3 each. Made from fresh fruit only, nothing else! Good for your body and for the environment. The icy pole wrappers are also 100% biodegradable, so please pop them in the compost bin. Perfect for our nude food school. This is a PFA initiative with profits going straight back to the school. Please contact Holly Gray if you have any further questions.

HOW DO I KNOW MY CHILD IS GROWING AS A READER? This is a question many parents ask but the answer is not as simple as we were led to believe in the past. Previously children were considered to be growing as readers if they were moving up book boxes. We would often hear, “I am taking books home form D box, and “My child reads chapter books now.” We were also accustomed to hearing that children were growing if they were progressing through lists of words. This quantity type approach is still used by some and continues to be used as a meas-ure of growth. However this approach neglects to acknowledge what true growth is for a reader. The quality of reading materi-als and promoting what an efficient reader does is paramount to reading success. At Armadale Primary School, we are committed to researching and continue to strengthen our understanding on how to best support our young readers. We do acknowledge the role the parent plays in this process and look forward to sharing ‘a read-er’s continuum’ with you. We aim to co-design these continuums with the students and empower them to map their learning journey in a qualitative way.

LEARNER AGENCY As mentioned in last week’s entry, promoting learner agency is an education priority. We are proud of the fact that this is a journey we have been on since our partnering with Ed Partnerships. Promoting learner agency is not easy. It requires us to reimagine how we deliver the curriculum. We can no longer deliver information and expect our students to develop deep and meaningful pathways. It was exciting to be a part of Armadale Warrior Run Fun and involve our House Captains, parents and teachers in the planning and running of the event. Our House Captains were not simply acting on decisions made for them. They were involved in the decision making process. Thoughts on co-designing from one of our captains…

PFA News GET YOUR BAKE/CRAFT ON!! Election Day Cake Stall, Craft Stall & Sausage Sizzle Saturday November 24th 8am to 4pm Calling all cake bakers, preserve makers and craft creators! Election Day is just around the corner and it is tradition for APS to hold a cake stall with fresh baked goodies made by our families to welcome our broader community while they place their votes. And it is a great opportunity to raise some funds for the school at the same time! This year we will also be having a sausage sizzle, and offering some crafts in time for Christmas. It is a fun community day for everyone! We will need a team of volunteers to help out on the day and for packaging on Friday 23rd Nov, so please email [email protected] to be added to the roster and nominate the times you are available. So dust off those family favourite cake/cookie/scone/preserve recipes, get out your scissors and craft glue, and get baking and making! See attached flyer for more information, with further detail to follow via class reps next week. Thanks, Sarah Monahan and the Election Day Cake Stall team

What a fun day it was! We've had fantastic feedback from parents, teachers and kids. It was so lovely to see the team spirit, comradery, and watching some of the older kids helping the younger ones along the course. It's the first time we have had the whole school running the course at the same time, so well done to all the kids for working together. A huge thank you to Ricci Thompson for her exceptional organisational skills and to the team of people working along side her to make it the 'funnest fun run ever' including Connie, Peter, Ben and the House Leaders. And a special thanks to all of the wonderful parents who put up their hands to help on the day. Monies collected were due yesterday, and we will be tallying it all up tomorrow morning, keep an eye out for the grand total! Thanks, Jodie Klijnsma - PFA

Parents and students are invited to come along to

help to make craft items to sell at our election day

stall.

The Arts

Our school has a story that we can discover and contribute to through The Arts Year 3/4: Printing The 3/4’s are working extremely hard completing their designs and printing their ‘Artist Proofs’. There have been many discoveries and challenges but it’s been a fantastic opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of printing. Year 5/6: Victorian Tile Project The first batch of tiles the Year 5/6 students made have been fired. They are outstanding! All the tiles looks incredible and it will be wonderful to see them installed in the school. Here are a few photos of the tiles straight out of kiln at Gasworks Ceramic studios: The Kiln

CELEBRTION DAY: One Song

Today the SSG, together with classes across the school, joined thousands of schools across Australia to sing ‘One Song’. Singing in a

group or choir is a very positive experience. The benefits of participating in music are widely documented. I have highlighted just one aspect of the benefits of music- teamwork and collaboration

- that Music Australia discussed in a recent article. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIc-meOU-7U&feature=youtu.be

Terracycle win a Community Garden Competition Recycle your oral care waste and drop it into the container outside the school office, by Friday this week, so we can go in the draw to win a prize.

Recycling of pens, pencils and markers Please help our school reduce our waste to landfill by collecting used pens, markers and pencils and placing them in the Ter-racycle Zero Waste box outside the staff room.

Aussie Backyard Bird Count 2018 Prep N and 3/4J were eager to participate in the annual Aussie Backyard Bird Count last week. The students were great twitch-ers and spotted a number of birds in a set time of 20 minutes. It was fantastic to hear that so many families in our community took part in this important citizen scientist event. Although the official event has finished the field guide is well worth looking at if you are interested in discovering more about our local birds.
