Old Republic Title is proud to present the following relocation guide! If you are thinking of moving to the Valley of the Sun, the following will help you kick start your move to the wonderful greater Phoenix area.
Arizona is a popular destination and is growing every year. There are plenty of activities to partake in, which is easy to do with 300+ days of sunshine! There is something for everyone; the outdoor enthusiast, recreational activities, hospitality, dining and shopping, not to mention the nation’s greatest selection of golf courses.
As the cultural hub of the Southwest, Phoenix is also a leader in the business world. The cost of living compared with the high quality of life is favorable compared to other national cities.
We hope you experience and enjoy everything this state we call home has to offer.
Welcome to the Valley of the Sun!

Originally part of the New Mexico Territory from 1850 – 1862, it was made into the Arizona Territory by the next year. The US established a military outpost called Camp McDowell in 1865, it was northeast of the current city to protect the road between Tucson and Prescott. At the time, Prescott was the original capital. A miner, prospector, and saloon owner named Jack Swilling and his friend Darrel Duppa were known as the founders of Phoenix in 1868. Phoenix was named the capital of the Arizona Territory in 1889. Duppa presented the name of Phoenix as related to the story of the rebirth of the mythical Phoenix born from ashes. The origin being the rebirth of a city of canals rebuilt on the site of the ancient Hohokam canal systems dating back to 700-1400 AD. Once it was connected to the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe railroads, Phoenix became a trading and processing center.
Arizona officially became the 48th state in 1912, making it the last of the contiguous states admitted to the Union. Arizona’s population grew progressively, but truly exploded after WWII. Cold weathered retirees began to “flock” to the mild and pleasant winters, and with the introduction of air conditioning, made the summer’s acceptable. Land was annexed, master-planned communities were built , and new industries were welcomed by the city’s business community. The city had grown from 100,000 people to three million in just 50 years! That is half the population of the entire state!
As part of the four corners states, Arizona is the largest landlocked U.S. state by population. The breathtaking Grand Canyon, national forests, parks, and monuments, along with Indian reservations are located in the state.
History of Arizona

Arizona is known as the “Valley of the Sun” for a reason. Enjoyable and warm for the majority of the year, the average temperatures range from 65-85 degrees from October through April. Summer temperatures in the desert hit above 100 degrees from late May through beginning of September. However the “dry heat” as it is known for, means that when it does rain, the humidity remains reasonable. The average annual rainfall for Phoenix is 8.3 inches.

FUN FACT: Monsoon season usually runs from late June through the end of September.
The word “monsoon” is derived from the Arabic word Muslim, which means, “season” or “wind shift”.
The word monsoon doesn’t exactly refer to a single storm; it describes an entire season or very large weather pattern.

Moving with PetsBefore the MoveThere are a few things to accomplish before you begin moving with pets. Before leaving, schedule a veterinary examination to check your pet’s health, obtain copies of vaccination records and a health certificate (if required), update identification tags and discuss a tranquilizer or precautionary measures for the trip. This guide gives some ideas you can do to ease the stress of moving the family pets to your new home.
Moving DayPets and birds often become nervous and uncertain on moving day and may exhibit strange behavior as they communicate their uncertainty. In addition, nothing is more saddening or frustrating than closing the back doors of a moving van only to discover that a loved pet is missing and may have slipped into the load while no one was looking. Before the big day arrives, try to arrange for the animals to be left at a friend or relative’s house while everything is loaded; this not only keeps them out of the way where they won’t be harmed, but will help them to stay a bit more relaxed while their familiar toys and furniture are packed and loaded.
Arriving at the New HomeWhen pets and birds arrive at their new home, they may remain nervous or agitated for a time as they adjust to their new climate and surroundings. Moving is an experience that pets aren’t used to, and sometimes they act strangely as a result. If your pets are escape artists or extra noisemakers, be sure that their living areas are secure and that there are a number of familiar items around to help imprint the idea that the new home is there to stay. If the pets make too much noise in the night---as lonely pets are apt to do---talk with your local veterinary specialist for some dieting and animal prescription tips that will help the pet adjust to the new environment.
