Nestled just outside of historic Florence, Arizona, a true hidden gem of the Southwest awaits you. Deriving its name from the nearby

Poston Butte, named in honor Charles Poston, Poston Butte Golf Club serves as the centerpiece of the Pulte Group’s Anthem at Merrill Ranch. With fi ve sets of tee boxes on each hole and no forced carries off the tees, save the signature par-3 17th featuring an island green, Poston Butte Golf Club provides an

enjoyable golf experience to all that play. Managed by Troon Golf, the recognized world-wide leader in luxury golf experi-ences, this Gary Panks design is always in excellent condition throughout the year. The fi rst thought that many have regarding residential golf courses is the fear that the homes neighboring the course encroach upon the players making one feel claustrophobic and a bit apprehensive about sending a shot slightly off-line. Not so at Poston Butte.

The Pulte Group carefully plotted each home site around the course to provide players enough breathing room to keep the ball in play while still offering won-derful views of the course to homeown-ers. Add in the generous fairways that are much wider than average, and the player’s only concern left will be keeping their ball out of the forty-nine bunkers which have each been strategically placed throughout the course. With just two water hazards on the course, Poston Butte lends itself to helping you keep all of your golf balls. That is unless your de-termination gets the better of you on the 17th hole, prompt-ing you to reach into every pocket in the bag searching for a ball that you can successfully land on the popular island green. Although it receives the most attention, the 169 yard 17th hole is not the only memorable par 3 at Poston Butte. The remain-ing three each have their own unique characteristics to keep your full atten-tion. At 235 yards, the 4th hole can play like a short par 4 when the hole is cut all the way in the back of the green measuring 44 yards in depth. At 166 yards, the 7th hole is the shortest par 3 on the course but a deep bunker that runs along the entire right side and multi-tiered green with steep run-off areas make it just as treacherous at #17. At 193 yards, the

12th hole rivals with #17 for being the most picturesque par 3. Bunkers guard both sides of the green which sits atop a wall of stacked stones. A small collec-tion of saguaro cactus also decorates the surrounding native areas of granite and other desert fauna making the hole a beautiful sight as sundown approaches. The remaining fourteen holes com-prised of four par 5’s and ten par 4’s each provide great opportunity for blissful success, or dismal failures. The generos-ity that has been given to the players in the form of wide fairways is balanced out with green complexes that place a

premium on thoughtful approach shots. Contoured greens and a deep bunker make fi ring at the fl ag a risky proposi-tion. On many occasions, players will have to use their creativity to fi nd the safest way to the hole. Golfers with a deft short game and a steady putter will do

well at Poston Butte, while those with-out will quickly understand the adage of “driving for show and putting for dough.” Located just outside of one of the oldest towns in Arizona, the golf course pays homage to its historic surround-ings. The hill known as Poston Butte is located just east of the golf course and is visible from most every hole on the front nine. The hill was named after Charles Poston, a western pioneer, explorer, politician, journalist and expert in Indian affairs. Poston is regarded as the “Father of Arizona” because of his role in con-vincing Abraham Lincoln to create the territory of Arizona in 1863. Poston lived in Arizona and served as its fi rst delegate to the US Congress. Upon discovering an Apache ruin atop a hill on the north-west side of Florence, he visualized the tower ruin as a temple where Indians once conducted worship ceremonies. In tribute, he dedicated his personal wealth in 1870 to constructing a pathway lead-

ing to a resurrected fi re temple known as “Poston’s Butte.” In 1925, nearly 23 years after his death, Poston was buried at the summit of his beloved “Poston’s Butte,” which still stands today. The fi re temple serves as the logo for Poston Butte Golf Club and is used throughout. Smaller scale pyramids serve as the tee mark-ers and monument signs for each hole in addition to the logoed apparel in the golf shop. A picture of Charles Poston and his story is also displayed in the golf shop for all to learn and enjoy the rich history of the surrounding land. As magnifi cent as the golf course is, so to is the master-planned community for which it is the highlight. Anthem at Merrill Ranch is the latest development for the Pulte Group and the fi rst to offer the unique combination of the Sun City by Del Webb lifestyle and the Parkside by Pulte Homes lifestyles in one community. Living in the active-adult commu-nity of Sun City Anthem, you’ll be able

Troon Golf has enjoyed a longstanding part-nership with the Pulte Group to open and operate multiple golf courses in master-planned communities such as Poston Butte in Arizona as well as numerous oth-ers in Nevada and Florida. Operating in 23 countries and 31 American states, Troon’s focus on providing the fi nest playing surfaces, outstand-

ing hospitality, and unmatched amenities has created a brand recognized a the industry leader in creating memorable and exceptional golf experiences. What makes Poston Butte even better is that you can play it. As a daily-fee golf course, Poston Butte is open to all players and offers affordable green fees through-out the season. Tee times can be booked via the phone at 520.723.1880 or online at www.bookthebutte.com. Special rates are also available to homeowners in the Anthem at Merrill Ranch community. It’s also easy to get to whether you’re coming from Phoenix or Tucson. After just one round here, you’ll want to tell all your friends that Poston Butte is a must-play. Then again, maybe you’d rather this gem remain hidden and keep it all to yourself.

In late 2010, the Amateur Association of Arizona Golfers (AAAG) was developed to protect and grow the game of golf in Arizona. The AAAG services its members on a local level in the area of handicapping and playing opportunities. The association will expand its programs in many areas to fully service amateur golfers in the months and years to come.

AAAG provides the following services:• Handicap Index - All AAAG Members will

carry an index with computation services provided by Handicomp.

• All scores will update on the 1st and 15th of each month. Members will also receive a Low Index and Trend Handicap.

• Posting - Members will be able to post scores at participating golf courses or via the “Post A Score” tab on the top left of the home page.

• AAAG Tournaments - The 2011 Tourna-ment Schedule will consist of at least seven

events that include opportunities for those of any skill level and a variety of price points.

“The benefi ts of maintaining a handicap include being able to compete on any course from any set if tees on an equitable basis. It also gives golfers a way to measure skill im-provement and is most likely required to play in amateur events,” said Joel Schafer, AAAG’s Executive Director. “If you love to play golf, I would encourage you to maintain a handicap and take your game to the next level.” The AAAG will continue to seek input from its participating golf courses and clubs in order to develop programs that will benefi t the clubs and membership. The AAAG is committed to establishing programs that are affordable and valuable to both members and participating golf courses. For more informa-tion, please contact the AAAG at 480-443-9009 or visit www.azgolfnetwork.org.

Proper Sequencing for Improved Consistency By Mike Malaska – Nicklaus Academies’

World-Wide Director of Instruction

About the author: PGA Professional Mike Malaska is No. 24 on Golf Digest’s ranking of instructors and is one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100. To arrange a personal session with Mike, call 602.799.7099 or visit www.nicklausacademies.com

When it comes to improving your consistency from tee to green, one of the common faults with many players lies in the improper sequencing of their upper body with their arms. Without proper sequencing, or an easier way to think about it, the coordination of the move-ment of your arms and chest, you are left with nothing more than dumb luck that the face of the club will meet up with the ball at the absolute perfect time - and on the correct path. It is hard to bank on that combination for 18-holes of quality scoring.

Here is a drill I use to demonstrate and reinforce proper sequencing;1. Set up the ball as you normally

would2. Remove your top hand from the grip

and put it sideways on your sternum3. Make a regular take away, stopping

the club at the top (notice how much greater your club head has travelled versus your chest)

4. As you start your downswing, rotate your chest back to your starting posi-tion at impact, then continue rotating all the way through impact to your fi nish position.

When your hands move out of synch with the rotation of your chest, the com-mon result is a swing that is over the top, creating a weak shot to the right or a dead pull to the left (for a right handed player).

Next time you fi nd yourself spraying the ball all over the course, check your se-quencing and work on getting your arms and body working as one.

The Wigwam is more than just a resort; it is a part of Arizona history. Situated in the West Valley, this iconic hotel fi rst opened in 1929 and has become synonymous with Litchfi eld Park and is in many ways the cornerstone of that very community.

Blending casual elegance with the charm of the South-west, the Wigwam is a 440-acre getaway destination that promises exceptional vaca-tion and dining experiences with even more unforgettable golf outings. In fact, The Wigwam was recently the home of the 2011 U.S. Open Qualifi er as well as the 2010 U.S. Amateur Qualifi er.

Located just north of I-10 off Litchfi eld Road, The Wigwam is just 20 minutes from downtown Phoenix.

One of Arizona’s fi rst and fi nest golf destinations, the 82-year-old Wigwam is the only resort in the Grand Canyon State to offer three exceptional 18-hole golf courses on property. Two of these, the Gold Course and The Patriot Course (formerly the Blue Course) were designed by famed architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., while the Wigwam’s Heritage Course (formerly the Red Course) was created by Arizona golf legend Robert “Red” Lawrence.

Built in 1964, the Gold Course offers players perhaps the fi nest traditional layout in the Great Southwest. This lush, mature course stretches 7,100 yards from the back tees and challenges players with classic Jones features – namely small, elevated greens; narrow landing areas; elongated tees; and strategically placed bunkers and water hazards.

Perhaps the best kept secret at The

Wigwam is the quality and challenge of The Patriot which plays to 6,030 yards and closely follows the hole routing of The Wigwam’s original golf course. Also de-signed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the Patriot plays to 6,030 yards and roughly follows the hole routing of The Wigwam’s origi-nal golf course. Though shorter in length than the Gold Course, The Patriot which plays to 6,030 yards and nearly follows the hole routing of The Wigwam’s original golf course. Scoring well requires pinpoint accuracy and a strong understanding of golf strategy.

At 6,861 yards, The Heritage Course is The Wigwam’s most modern design and offers players an open, “airy” layout that’s dotted with numerous lakes, rock-fi lled creeks and gigantic greens – all of which put a premium on good putting and chipping skills.

Now known as simply Wigwam Golf, golf operations are headed by 30-year Ari-zona golf veteran Leo Simonetta. Simonetta and his staff are striving to deliver one of

Exceptional service, outstanding course conditioning of its 54 holes and quality dining at Red Allen’s restaurant makes TheWigwam a unique resort golf and countryclub experience.

All summer long, The Wigwam is offer-ing multiple discounts, including a “Sum-mer Pass” program that allows golfer to playfor just $25 a round; an offer that allows for day-long play, unlimited rounds for just $40 and even several “Play N’ Pay” dates.Additionally, there are also several juniorprograms that cater to the emerging player.

The Wigwam also offers multiple mem-berships. The Premier Membership allows forall the golf club and resort have to offer. Withunlimited access to the golf club and wideusage of the resort amenities, members and their family are able to utilize the property as their own playground year round. Plus, access to JDM sister property, the ArizonaBiltmore’s two golf courses, is included. In

addition to the Premier Membership, a basic Golf Membership is also available. The Golf Membership includes nearly all the same privileges as the Premier Membership, withcertain elements available on a “pay-as-you-go” basis. The benefi t of golf membership is areduced monthly dues structure and access tonearly all of the Wigwam Resort.

Since acquiring the Wigwam in 2009, JDM Partners - headed by Jerry Colangelo - has been working to improve and rebrandthe resort’s golf operations. Since the acquisi-tion, millions of dollars have been investedinto improving golf operations and the three golf courses. Recently, a national golf schoolwas planted at the golf club and that, alongwith various junior programs, make the Wigwam the ideal place for the entire family.

With a fun-fi lled Par 60 Gary Panks-design, “The Lakes” as it is referred to by the locals serves up a round of golf that will test your iron play and your short game. Display-ing Panks’ creative genius, each hole is distinctly unique in design and length.

We would be remiss if we failed to mention that The Lakes is THE PER-FECT venue for a family friendly event, weekly golf league or other creative out-ing. It is not uncommon to see “Dad” on

the course with their “Juniors” getting in a quick round. Best of all the value of a round of golf is second to none as the course aims to please with rates that will be within reach of most every golf budget. Carson Valley winds through century-old cottonwoods and along the Carson River for a relaxing, yet challenging 6,023 yards.

At Dayton Valley Golf Club, Arnold Palmer blended the natural beauty of high desert terrain with the challenges of links-style fairways. The large, undulating greens and plush fairways have welcomed Stage One PGA Tour Qualifying since 1995.

Eagle Valley East invites golfers to tee it high and let it fl y across its challenging 6,658 yards, numerous water hazards and large greens.

Eagle Valley West is a links-style course that demands accuracy with an emphasis on target golf.

Empire Ranch Golf Course has three nine-hole courses, each with water and wetlands. It’s fairly open but rarely forgiving with fi ve sets of tees catering to every level of golfer.

The Lakes Course at Genoa Lakes is a John Harbottle and Peter Jacobsen design. It was 4th Best New Public Course in North America by “Golf Digest” in 1994, and 3rd Best Course in the Nevada in 1995.

Genoa Lakes Resort Course is a Johnny Miller/John Harbottle design and features a variety of elevation changes, visually tight fairways and numerous water hazards.

Silver Oak Golf Course features impres-sive views of downtown Carson City. A wide open appearance can be deceiving as it winds through natural terrain, demand-ing accurate play over changing elevations.

Are you looking for a golf experience unlike any other? Does the unusual, yet beautiful, excite you? If you answered yes to either of these questions,

then you are ready for Quarry Pines Golf Club. The Pines represents an evolution in golf course design and the enjoyment of the game. Ten years ago, following a decision to abandon the sand and gravel quarry adjacent to the original golf course, the Town of Marana and the quarry/golf course owner agreed on a plan that would reclaim the quarry. By strategically relocating ten golf holes into the old quarry and reconfi guring eight of the existing holes, one of Tucson’s most popular golf courses was transformed into an even better product. Today the unique desert landscape is highlighted bydramatic elevation changes and the addition of thousandsof trees. We invite you to come play Quarry Pines – Arizona’s only quarry golf course!

Mile-high Prescott—just 90 minutes north of Phoenix—offers a terrifi c blend of cooler temperatures and opportunities for adventure both indoors and out.

From the heights of Thumb Butte to the washes of Granite Creek, the many miles of groomed trails through-out Prescott afford visitors a wonderful chance to strike out on foot, bicycle or horseback. Prescott’s Mile-High Trail System has approximately 28 miles of trails including Rails-to-Trails projects. Miles of additional multi-use trails wind their way through Prescott National For-est, the largest stand of Ponderosa pines in the nation.

Obtain trail maps from the Prescott Chamber of Commerce (117 W. Goodwin St.) or the Prescott National Forest offi ce (344 S. Cortez St).

Watson, Willow and Goldwater Lakes provide a great opportunity for canoeing

or kayaking—Prescott Outdoors rents canoes and kayaks at these locations, and for the fi rst time will also be rent-ing bicycles at Watson Lake. Soak in the scenic beauty as you paddle or pedal around some of Prescott’s greatest natural resources. For more information about rentals, go to www.prescottoutdoors.com or call 928-925-1410.

Prescott’s mile-high climate makes it an ideal destination for golfers. With over 300 days of sunshine each year and aver-age summer temperatures of 85 degrees, golfi ng in Prescott is a no-brainer. Each course offers challenging, varied terrain, including rolling hills, tree-lined fairways and granite outcroppings. The game is made even more pleasant by the sweeping views surrounding the courses.

Art, History & Heritage

Prescott’s three museums are a great place to begin to get a fi x on the area’s culture and history. The Phippen Museum (4701 N. Highway 89) features an exten-sive permanent collection of Western art, and throughout the year they feature a number of traveling exhibits and shows. Sharlot Hall Museum (415 W. Gurley St.) is built around the site of the fi rst Territo-rial Governor’s Mansion, which acts as the center-point for seven other historic buildings. An extensive collection of artifacts dating beyond Arizona’s early ter-ritorial days brings the past to life for visi-tors. The Smoki Museum (147 N. Arizona Ave.) documents early Native American history of regional tribes through a variety of basketry, pottery, weavings and many other artifacts. “Seven Canyons is irreplaceable real estate,” course designer and golf legend Tom Weiskopf said. “You can’t fi nd that kind of stuff anywhere.”

If you journey north to Sedona and play The Club at Seven Canyons, you’ll un-doubtedly have your own, similar reaction.

The Club at Seven Canyons is a Par-70, 6,746-yard golf course situated on the out-skirts of Sedona. Since its opening in 2003, The Club at Seven Canyons has received glowing reviews from the nation’s golf publi-cations and leading course critics.

America’s 50 Greatest Golf Retreats” by Golf Digest Index; “One of the Best Residential Golf Courses” and “One of the Top 100 Modern Courses” by Golfweek Magazine.

Golfweek’s architecture editor Bradley S. Klein, wrote the classic line, “Seven Can-yons is the “IMAX” of golf.”

The Club at Seven Canyons was built as a private golf club and a strong member-ship base still exists. However, like many private venues across the country, The Club at Seven Canyons recently opened its doors to the public.

Located on approximately 200 acres surrounded by stunning red rocks and 100,000 acres of protected national forest land, The Club at Seven Canyons puts a premium on exceptional shot-making with small greens, narrow landing areas, classic-style bunkering, mature trees, natural water features and constant changes in elevation.

“You don’t have to use a driver to comfortably enjoy and play the course, as with any course that’s designed properly.

The game of golf is distance and direction and it’s controlling those two aspects,” said Weiskopf.

The fourth hole, a 194 yard Par 3, con-cisely represents the experience that is The Club at Seven Canyons. Starting with the magnifi cent view from the tee box, you’ll then come across an 80-foot drop to a green which is protected by ironically, seven bun-kers. With the constant wind, club selection is important and makes the hole interesting each and every time.

In additional to select daily fee play, The Club at Seven Canyons also features 395 golf club memberships, lavishly-appointed fractional and whole ownership Villas and 32 private estate home sites.

For a Stay and Play getaway, the golf course also offers packages with the numer-ous Sedona lodging establishments includ-ing Enchantment Resort.
