Bad news for graduates: degrees are n

providing the salaries of ve years agoThe gap in earnings betweengraduates working in civil engi-neering, linguistics and sociologyand those with jobs in these areaswithout degrees has shrunk by asmuch as nearly half in five years,figures show.

While workers with a degreein theology could expect to earn£9,170 more than those withoutin 2009, this has dropped by morethan a third to a difference of just£5,754 in 2014.

Analysis by TheCompleteUni-versityGuide.co.uk shows that forthose who studied sociology thereduction is even greater, goingfrom £7,702 to £4,281– a differenceof £3,421.

The ‘professional premium’ forcivil engineers was £9,781 in 2009,but just £6,461 in 2014, a differenceof £3,320, while there was a gap of £1,489 for linguists, but the great-est variance of all was in Eastand South Asian Studies – plung-ing from £7,806 to £2,921 – a £4,885difference over five years.

The professional premium isthe difference between the meansalary for those starting employ-ment or self-employment in aprofessional occupation, which

normally requires a degree, andthe mean salary for those startingother employment or self-employ-ment.

The guide’s analysis of theannual Destinations of Leaversfrom Higher Education surveyshowed that the most dramaticwidening of differentials wasin nursing, where there was anincrease of 139 per cent, withgraduate nurses expecting to earnan average of just £2,969 a yearmore in 2009 – rising to £7,100 by2014.

This was followed by electricaland electronic engineering at 59per cent, Italian at 37 per cent andcomputer science at 30 per cent.

Out of 66 subjects for which fullfigures are available, the widestvariance was in chemical engi-neering, with those with degreesexpecting to earn an average of £28,641 but those without £16,111 –a difference of £12,530.

This was followed by general en-gineering (a difference of £11,736)and physics and astronomy (adifference of £10,174).

The narrowest advantage isamong graduates in Celtic stud-ies, Middle Eastern and African

studies and music, where itranges from £2,013 to £2,482.

Although the graduates sur-veyed were not liable for the full£9,000 a year tuition fees intro-duced in England in 2012, startingsalaries in 34 subjects were abovethe £21,000 threshold for repay-ment of tuition fee loans, while 33were below it.

Dr Bernard Kingston, principalauthor of TheCompleteUniver-sityGuide.co.uk, said: “Securinga job in a professional field stillbrings with it a higher startingsalary.

“But there has been a continu-ing decline over the years in themajority of subjects.

“Only a handful have showna widening of the differentialbetween a graduate in a profes-sional occupation compared witha graduate in the same subject ina non-professional one.

“As tuition fees of £9,000 a yearbecome the rule in England start-ing salaries assume a particularsignificance when the thresholdfor repayment begins at £21,000.

“It appears it will be severalyears before many graduates startto pay off their loans.”
