1 Argonaut Math Olympiad 2018/2019 Dear Parents, Your child is invited to join the PTA-Sponsored Math Olympiad program at Argonaut. This program is offered to all Argonaut 4th and 5th graders. The main program will run from September 25th, 2018 to March 12rd, 2019 (approximately 21 sessions). In addition, if there is enough interest, there will be an opt-in Math Olympiad post-season program called Extension, for students with strong interest in Math competitions. Extension, if offered, will run from March to May. For more detail, please visit www.argomath.com. Sign-up is now available, on a first-come-first-serve basis. Deadline to sign up is September 11th, 2018. Parents who are interested in joining the all-volunteer coaching staff please also sign up at the website. Argonaut MO participates in the national MOEMS (Math Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools) program, which offer five monthly contests, from November to March, conducted during five of the Tuesday sessions. In the words of MOEMS, the goal of the program is: ? To stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics ? To introduce important Mathematical concepts and major strategies for problem solving ? To develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems ? To strengthen Mathematical intuition ? To foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity ? To provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges There will be classes once a week on Tuesdays from 7:00 pm to 8:20 pm taught by parent volunteers. Students are expected to attend all sessions and also submit weekly homework. Sample tests for Division E are available at https://www.moems.org/sample.htm. The Argonaut MO program is designed for Argonaut students who enjoy learning more advanced concepts in Math and who would like to be challenged. The curriculum for this program is different from the regular classroom Math curriculum. It is not essential to enroll your child in this program for the purpose of academic achievement. Participating in Math Olympiad is completely voluntary, but requires a serious time commitment and an enthusiasm towards learning Math. Please discuss with your child whether he/her is interested prior to enrollment. That said, the MO program has been wildly popular and hugely successful, and we believe it brings significant benefits to Argonaut students beyond MOEMS. All will be explained at the (mandatory) Parent Information Meeting tentatively on September 20th. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by email. — Hardy Leung, Argonaut PTA Math Chair ([email protected]).
