One day, in the other part of the world
- 12,000 to 19,000 barrels per day
- 105 days to stop the oil spill
-30,000 to 270,000 barrels of oil on the sea.
- 1,300 vessels on site, dozens of aircrafts, rem3otely operated vehicles, and multiple mobile offshore drilling units.
- 300,000 feet of containment boom and 1 million feet of sorbent boom used.
- Approximately 11 million gallons of an oil-water mix recovered
- Approximately 840,000 gallons of total dispersant deployed

In the Mediterranean Sea about 60 maritime accidents occur per year, 15 of them involving ships
provoking oil/chemical spills.

Parco Nazionale Arcipelago Toscano
OBJECTIVESTo develop and to test a Marine Information System (MIS) capable of providing precise and punctual pollution control in coastal zone areas with vulnerable or protected habitats as
those of the Tuscan Archipelago
ACTIVITIESTo develop and to combine marine observig technologies for a more reliable detection and the monitoring of hydrocarbon/oil spills in marine environment, in support of preventive and emergency interventions.
To develop an Integrated Communication System (ICS) to ensure reliable and efficient data transmission from different types of sensors to the MIS, providing an accurate geo-positioning of every data item.
To develop and to test a Marine Information System (MIS), an operational central unit provided with evaluation and decision-making power (expert system) where remote sensing data, field experiment results and estimates from simulation models are integrated in order to support the authorities in emergency handling and management.
