The challenge: keeping the momentum going. Many shoppers, shut in since mid-March, seem to be eager to return after stores reopened with new protocols like requiring workers to wear masks. Still, reports of rising cases of the coronavirus in a slew of states could unravel the momentum. Financial worries could also restrain spending. Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette said he’s seeing its reopened stores are bringing back 50% of their typical business; he originally though sales would be down 80% during the initial phase of reopening. And Kohl’s CEO Michelle Gass said its reopened stores now average about 75% of their normal levels. They both shared their thoughts at a virtual retail conference hosted by investment firm Cowen & Co. Teen retailer American Eagle Outfitters is faring even better, averaging roughly 95% of their normal levels. Still, just like before the pandemic, clothing stores are having a hard time competing with other types of retailers. Foot traffic fell 59% at clothing stores for the week ended May 25 compared to the year-ago period, according to Placer.ai, an analytics firm that uses smartphone data to track consumer behavior. Home improvement retailers that were allowed to stay open saw foot traffic up 20% for that time period. Anne D’Innocenzio; J. Paschke • AP Will shoppers’ return last? Pennsylvania-based Dick’s cited strong early sales at stores that have re-opened and said it has returned workers from furlough while restoring previously reduced salaries for all employees, except certain executives. One of the largest national sporting goods chains, Dick’s closed all its stores on March 19 due to the coronavirus outbreak and furloughed a “significant number” of its 41,600 employees in early April. Dick’s reported earlier this month that while sales at established stores fell 29.5% in the first quarter, they are only down 4% through the first four weeks of the second quarter. Dick’s Sporting Goods, which have been inching back toward pre-coronavirus levels, rose 9% to close at $39.41 on Friday. The shutdowns and stay-at-home orders due to the coronavirus have led to steep declines in retail sales nationwide. Sales plunged by a record 16.4% in April. That followed a skid of 8.3% in March. But now that states have been easing restrictions on businesses, economists expect retail sales jumped 8.5% in May from the previous month. The Commerce Department issues its May tally of U.S. retail sales Tuesday. Bumps in the road CarMax serves up its latest quarterly report card Friday. Wall Street expects the used car dealership operator’s fiscal first-quarter earnings and revenue declined from a year earlier. In April, CarMax warned that its sales would be down significantly as the coronavirus outbreak forced the company to shutter some of its locations. To cope, the company introduced curbside pickup and home delivery at most of its open locations. Eye on housing New government data on residen- tial construction should provide insight into the state of the new-home market. The Commerce Department is expected to report Wednesday that builders broke ground on new single-family homes and apart- ments at a faster pace in May than in the previous month. U.S. home construction slowed in April to the lowest level in five years as the coronavirus pandemic shut- downs disrupted homebuilding, leading to a 30.2% drop in groundbreakings. Shoppers are making their way back to recently reopened clothing stores like Macy’s with a little more gusto than anticipated.

And Kohl’s CEO Michelle Gass said its

reopened stores now average about 75% of their normal levels. They both shared their thoughts at a virtual retail conference hosted by investment firm Cowen & Co.

Teen retailer American Eagle Outfitters is faring even better, averaging roughly 95% of their normal levels.

Still, just like before the pandemic, clothing stores are having a hard time competing with other types of

retailers.

Investors cheered Dick’s Sporting Goods’ announcement that it would reinstate its dividend and open all its stores by June 30.

Pennsylvania-based Dick’s cited strong early sales at stores that have re-opened and said it has returned workers from furlough while restoring previously reduced salaries for all employees, except certain executives.

One of the largest national sporting goods chains, Dick’s closed all its stores

on March 19 due to the coronavirus outbreak and furloughed a “significant number” of its 41,600 employees in early April.

Retail rebound? The shutdowns and stay-at-home orders due to the coronavirus have led to steep declines in retail sales nationwide.

Sales plunged by a record 16.4% in April. That followed a skid of 8.3% in March. But now that states have been easing restrictions on businesses, economists expect retail sales jumped 8.5% in May from the previous month. The Commerce Department issues its May tally of U.S. retail sales Tuesday.

Bumps in the roadCarMax serves up its latest quarterly report card Friday.

Eye on housingNew government data on residen-tial construction should provide insight into the state of the new-home market.

The Commerce Department is expected to report Wednesday that builders broke ground on new single-family homes and apart-ments at a faster pace in May than in the previous month. U.S. home construction slowed in April to the lowest level in five years as the coronavirus pandemic shut-downs disrupted homebuilding, leading to a 30.2% drop in groundbreakings.
