Study GuideSurface Area of Prisms and CylindersPrisms are polyhedrons with congruent polygonal bases inparallel planes. Cylinders have congruent and parallel circularbases. An altitude is a perpendicular segment joining the planesof the bases. The length of an altitude is the height of thefigure. Right prisms have lateral edges that are altitudes. Aright cylinder is one whose axis is an altitude.

In the following formulas, L is lateral and T is total surface area.
Prisms L =PhT=Ph + 2B
Cylinders L = 2'ITrhT= 2'ITrh + 2'ITr2
Example: Find the surface area of the right cylinder.
T = 2'ITrh + 2'ITr2T = 21T(3.5)(6) + 21T(3.5)2T = 66.5'IT or about 208.92 cm''
