Dear St. John Paul II Area Faith Community, I am deeply honored, blessed and excited to be serving you all as the new principal of Holy Trinity School in Winsted. Last Monday afternoon I left San Diego with two of my older sons and our shepherd/mastiff mix dog Molly to drive the 30 hours in our loaded-down minivan. 50 hours later, on the evening of Wednesday, we happily arrived. Thursday we vigorously began our house hunt, hoping to find something in Winsted or in the very close proximity—with no luck yet. Please keep us in your prayers for that intention, and let us know if you know of any possibilities. With 11 children, we are looking for at least four bedrooms and 3000 square feet, or at least the possibility of making it that large by finishing the basement. My two oldest attend the University of Notre Dame, and the next seven are attending Holy Trinity School in grades K, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11. From my perspective thus far, there are many positive elements to Holy Trinity School, which you already probably know. At the same time, the school has been in a steady decline over the past decade or two, similar to many Catholic schools across the country. I came here to change that. Together with Father Wiering and the tremendous faculty, staff and families here, I hope to bring significant change in the coming years. We have space for many, many students, and my dream is to fill the school and have students on waiting lists to get in. This is what I helped facilitate in my six years as headmaster at St. Joseph Academy in San Marcos, CA. With your prayers and help, I know we can do it here, too. The two most important “pillars” of such a venture are to ensure that the Catholic Faith is the most important reality in the school, informing and guiding all that we do. The main goal of any Catholic school is to pass on the Faith to the students, ultimately, inspiring in them the love of God and neighbor which leads them to heaven. The Faith must be first and primary. Because we take our Faith seriously, we know that we are preparing God’s children for their vocation, to what He is calling them to do. Thus, we must take their education seriously. When I arrived at St. Joseph Academy, it was rare that a student was able to get into a highly selective school for college. This last year, four of the twelve seniors were accepted and are attending such schools: the University of Notre Dame, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, San Diego. The class, for the fourth year in a row, boasted the highest SAT scores in the diocese of San Diego. It is my belief and experience that the well-run Catholic school should be the best educational opportunity in town. Anywhere. I will do everything in my abilities to make this true for Holy Trinity, too. I cannot do it alone. With all of us praying for Holy Trinity and many of you pitching in to help (especially by entrusting your children to our care), it can be done. Nothing less than the future of Catholic education in this area is at stake, which goes a long way to preserving the Catholic Faith in this area for future generations. Together we can enkindle the Catholic Faith in our community once again. God bless! THE RE CONNECTION: As we approach the beginning of the new school year, we all have many questions. One of those questions, I’m sure, is: Will there be Religious Education this year? The answer is yes. Our hope is to have in-person classes, but there are still many details to be figured out as we continue to live in a worldwide pandemic and transition to a new CRE. RE families can expect to receive registration forms via email or regular mail. If you do not receive a mailing, please call into the office and let us know. There are also registration forms in the kiosk in the Gathering Space. We ask that all families with students in grades K-12 return a registration form, even if you are opting to homeschool your student(s)’ religious education. Your prompt response will be very helpful in planning the number of catechists needed. Completed registration forms are due Friday, September 11. Forms can be mailed in, dropped off at the parish office, dropped in the Sunday collection basket clearly marked “RE Registration” or emailed back to Sue Mielke at [email protected]. Our hope is to get classes started by late September. Additional information will be made available as more details are finalized. Please email Sue Mielke or call 320-864-5162 if you have any questions or concerns. Catechists needed: We are currently in need of numerous catechists to help pass on the faith to the youth of our parish. Please prayerfully consider if God is calling you to this ministry. We ask that everyone in the parish pray that God provides the needed catechists. One Hail Mary a day for this intention would be greatly appreciated. St. Charles Borromeo and St. Robert Bellarmine, patron saints of catechists, pray for us! For more information, contact Sue Mielke at [email protected] or call the parish office at 320-864-5162.

WEEKEND MASSES: We have returned to our weekend Mass schedule, but we continue to ask you to call in to reserve a space for you and your family so that we can make sure to adhere to the social distancing and maximum occupancy rules. Please call Monday through Friday during regular business hours as the office is closed on the weekend.

SUPPORT OF OUR MINISTRY: You may still drop your donation in the basket at weekend Mass, at the parish office, send it to the church by mail or use our online PayPal option. If you would like to set up automatic withdrawal, please contact Shirley at the parish office. Thank you for your continued support of our ministry during these difficult times.

EACH PARISH of the St. John Paul II Area Faith Community is compiling an email list to be able to communicate easily with parishioners in addition to the Sunday bulletin. If you would like your email added to the parish list, please contact your home parish with your email address.

NEW COORDINATOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: I’d like to introduce myself as the new Coordinator of Religious Education (CRE), replacing Mark Simons, who recently resigned. (Thank you, Mark, for all your years of service!) Just a little background, if you don’t already know me. I was born and raised in Glencoe and have been a lifelong member of our parish. When I was growing up, my family belonged to St. George Parish (now Berean Baptist). I continued as a member of the newly formed St. Pius X Parish when St. George and Ss. Peter & Paul merged over 30 years ago. My husband, Barry, and I have six children ranging in age from (almost) 14 to 32. We also have four grandchildren. After graduating from college, I taught band and classroom music for ten years in the public schools (including four years at GSL.) God then called me to be a stay-at-home wife and mother and a homeschool mom. We completed our 21st year of homeschooling this past spring. My two youngest are both attending public school this fall, which freed up time in my day to take on the position of CRE. I am honored and thrilled to be serving the St. Pius X students and families. God bless! ~Sue Mielke

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: The Glencoe Knights of Columbus will be holding its paper drive November 19, 20 and 21 in the upper parking lot of St. Pius X Church. It will be open Thursday and Friday from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. - noon.

COMMON CUP COAT DRIVE: Common Cup is again collecting new and gently used coats for children and adults. This includes coats, mittens, snow pants, and hats. A box has been placed in the back of each of our AFC church buildings. Direct donations can also be made to the Common Cup Office at 105-2nd Avenue in Hutchinson. OUR CURRENT STRUGGLE AND SUPPORT OF THE MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH: As you know, the ministry we share in the name of Jesus Christ depends on your generous and constant support. We usually receive your donations through our weekend Mass collections, but in this extraordinary crisis, our numbers for these celebrations are limited. We ask that you do what you can to continue helping us to meet our obligations to our employees, and to pay our bills. We are trying to provide ministry online, as much as possible, and we will continue to reach out to you in prayer. Please do what you are able to support our parish’s ministry. You may drop your donation at weekend Masses, mail your donations in, drop them by the parish office, or now use Pay Pal to make your donations. If you would like to set up automatic withdrawal please contact Bonnie at Holy Trinity or Shirley at St. Pius X or Holy Family.
