VOLUME 32 NUMBER 7 Published By And For Arkansas Good Sams September/October 2017
"As a member of Good Sam Club, I pledge to give aid to others, respect nature and the environment, give back to the community and those less fortunate, treat others with dignity and respect and wear a smile (like Good Sam and Good Samantha's) and promote the pledge of the Good Sam Club to others."
Good Sam Area 1 Friendship Campout was full of
activities for members and guests!!
Northwest Arkansas “Good Sam” camping chapters from Rog-ers, Ft Smith and Bella Vista, gathered together on Sept 21-24 for their annual Friendship Campout at Cedar Oaks Campground, in Grove Oklahoma. Thirty camping units of all sizes and shapes came together to enjoy a planned weekend of fun activities and fellowship. Don and Joann Cowell, “Area 1 ASD’s,“ organized the activities for the weekend, which includ-ed lots of great food, excellent fellowship and games, as well as a very interesting and enjoyable tour of the beautiful and historic “Coleman Theater” in Miami, OK. Built by George Coleman, local mining magnate, the opulent structure with Louis XV interior design was known as the “Jewel of Route 66”. Many famous entertainers like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby played there during the days of vaudeville. During our tour we had the opportunity to hear the magnifi-cent and fully restored Wurlitzer pipe organ. While Joann raved about the absolutely, astounding sounds coming out of the organ, Don marveled at the magnificent chandelier and total restoration of the facility originally built in l929. Other points of interest associated with Route 66 included the Famous Waylan's Ku-Ku Burger Restaurant and an original “Gas Station” located on the original Route 66. Saturday even-ing after a pot luck meal a Gospel Quartet entertained everyone. Lots of other activities were enjoyed including Bingo and Prizes, an auction of camping equipment, and lessons on how to make “Stained Glass” pieces. Each evening we enjoyed God’s great outdoors including many spectacular sunsets over Oklahoma’s “Grand Lake.” This concluded the 2017 Area 1 Friendship Campout;, a prayer was said for everyone that included a plea for everyone to trav-el safely to their next destination.
Area 6 Friendship Newsletter We had 24 rigs and one visitor rig at the Area 6 Friendship Cam-
pout.
I would like to thank AR 1, Belle Point Sams, Thundering Sams,
Second Chance, Dorcheat Sams, Whispering Pines Travelers, and
we kept a La Petite Roche chapter alive with 10 new members!.
We had a really good time. The first night we had 3 of the big-
gest pizzas ever. There were 52 slices on each; all was eaten ex-
cept 20 slices. Second night we went to JJ Café where the offer-
ing was fish, hamburger steak, pork chops, chicken, mashed pota-
toes, green beans, corn, and peach cobbler. And James had
made one of his famous peach cobblers, and John Moore had
brought some Black Walnut ice cream. The third night the park
fed us Ham, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, bread and tea.
All the meals where great. And thank you to everyone who pro-
vided food for us.
I would also like to thank Camping World, Moix, Gwatney, Ra-
zorBack Campers, and Paul Michaels for the Prizes. Gwatney
furnished us with ice cream on Wednesday afternoon and ice
cream sandwiches after Bingo Thursday night. We played 5 tour-
nament games.
Next year we will be going to Texarkana RV Park, Texarkana,
TX. September 11-13 deepart the 14. Please call 903-306-1364
for reservations then call Girtie to let her know that you will be
there 501-454-9806. There will be more information about what
to expect closer to time.
Again, thanks to everyone who attended; I hope you all had as
good a time as I did.

Hello to all. It’s been a very busy 2 months. Our LR Camping World had an awesome Chili Cook-off. Thank you Camping World for giving us the opportunity to participate. This is a great way to meet new, prospective members. Thanks to those who helped: Nibletts, VanHovelns, and yours truly. Can’t forget the Fall Rallys. Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma were awesome, and we enjoyed all our Directors’ meetings where we worked on ideas for upcoming Rallys. So very proud of the close connction we have with each other. On an unfortunate note, we are saddened of the passing of Dudley Wells, Merle Mennenga and Norma Williford. All will be dreadfully missed. We hope you all have had a wonderful summer. A lot of our members will be traveling to South Texas and other points South soon. Be safe on the road. Look for some good entertainment and, as usual, keep your eyes open for new sug-gestions for future Rallys. All suggestions are gratefully appreciated. Until then, keep up the good work all of you chapters do and have fun doing it! Bill and Dee

Bella Vista Traveling Sams met Friday, September 22nd. Twenty-
six members and guests enjoyed camping at Cedar Oaks RV Park in Grove, OK for the annual Friendship Campout. Election of officers was held and 2018 officers elected are: Pres-ident, Virginia Reynolds; V-P, Michelle Hittle; Secretary, Gayle Winsor; Treasurer, Char Sorensen; Wagon Master, Don Cowell. The chapter prepared pancakes, and offered different toppings, and sausage for the group on Friday. The members had a great time at Friendship. We want to thank Area 1 ASD’s Don & Joan Cowell for organizing this campout, and we are looking forward to next year’s Friendship campout. The next camp out will be Sunday October 22- 25, 2017 for the annual cleanup at Devil’s Den State Park.
Monday, September 18th Belle Point Sam Chapter members at-
tended the September Campout/Meeting at Natural Falls State Park. Eventually the Chapter President got everyone's attention and called our meeting to order. Once our meeting was concluded and the 50/50 winner proclaimed, we headed to Kansas, OK to the Harvest House Restaurant for our dinner. Tuesday morning sewing machines, irons & ironing boards, scis-sors, thread, etc. were brought in to the meeting room and 25 pillowcases for AR Children’s Hospital were constructed. The ladies completed their Charity project by noon. Everyone gath-
ered back in the meeting room by 5:30 for a delicious meal of Crock Pot Pot Roast with sides/desserts followed by fellowship and games. Wednesday wasn’t complete without a visit to the Casino nearby! Thursday morning some members arrived safely at Cedar Oaks RV Park, Grove, OK; checked-in, got set-up, registered and got our itinerary for the Fellowship Campout.

Our part of Iowa had its first snowfall on October 30. That made the weather
pretty cool for the little goblins who were trick or treating on Tuesday night.
They were out in force, though, with about 125 of them coming to our door! Little
Debbie cakes make the best treats and Arnie gets to finish the leftovers!
Our State Treasurer tells me that she has received dues and rosters from about
90% of the AR Good Sam chapters. If you haven’t submitted your dues and cur-
rent roster with 2018 chapter officers noted, please do so quickly. State dues are
$10 per member rig. Please make your check out to “AR Good Sam/Treasurer”
and include a copy of your updated roster . Mail to
Peggy Bundy, AR State Treasurer

I have not received nearly that percentage of updated rosters. Please help Peggy
in her job and email me (or snail mail) a duplicate copy of the updated roster
and officers to the address below.
Our lovely Marie Hopson was featured in Motor Homes of Texas Magazine. Check
out the excerpt from the magazine on page 4 and go to the magazine website for

This issue of the Arkansam News has 2 new advertisers: Muncy Industries (page
19) and Breck’s RV Park & Country Store (page 10). Advertisers in this newsletter
as well as the listing on the arkansasgoodsams.org website pay for their spot
which benefits AR Good Sams. If you get a chance to visit one of them, please
mention their ad.
Please take note of the updated 2018 South Region Rally schedule. Included for
each state is the Rally theme. Check out the unusual, imaginative titles on page
9.
With the Nov/Dec issue of this newsletter I will again post the chapter officers as I
have them and hope this will benefit each chapter making it easier to make
arrangements to interact with each other and enjoy joint campouts, meals, etc.
Good Sams is about helping each other. Not necessarily aid, but sharing of expe-
riences! REMEMBER!

A Note from the Park Host Coordinator
2017 has been a busy year for Peggy and me. Many of our hosts have had health issues, and many of you have filled in for them. After calling 12-15 people, it is refreshing to have someone say, “Yes, we can go.” All three parks have expressed their appreciation for the help provided by our hosts. We appreciate that so much. In addition to making sure all the parks have a host, we have collabo-rated with Bill and Dee to create some Park Host guidelines. Those will be shared at a later time. We are beginning to work on the 2018 list. The permanent people will remain on the list unless they request to be removed. If you know that you will not be able to continue as a host, please contact us as soon as possible. If possible, an email would be great. We keep notes on all contacts whether by phone or email. This is a valu-able asset as we begin the process for 2018. We will fill those spots with as many of you who do not have a slot or have only one. After that, we will contact others as it becomes necessary to fill in. Thank you for supporting us in this new adventure. It has been an exciting time for us.

The North East Arkansas Travelers N.E.A.T. had 7 rigs
visit the new RV Park in Batesville. The “Rally” Room is really a 3-bedroom house with a full kitchen. All the sites are paved and level. The staff was very nice; they had signs displayed welcoming us; and, as a result, we had a lady contact us wanting infor-mation about joining our chapter. I gave her infor-mation about our remaining campouts and will be sending her next year’s schedule. They arranged a tour of the Bad Boy mower plant, and the guys all came back with new caps and told stories about others ordering a new mower to be delivered the next week. We also tried out the Fox Creek BBQ restaurant; it is in the old train depot downtown. The food was very good and the wait staff was friendly. Information for the park is: Brecks RV Park and Country Store, 897 Batesville Blvd, Batesville, AR 72501, phone 870-569-8031. Our own Marie Hopson featured in Motor Homes of Texas Magazine.
Marie tells everyone her love of camping and traveling
started at a very early age. My daddy, mother, brother,
sister and I made a trip from Glen Rose, Texas to the Ar-
kansas River Valley near Russellville in the early 1950’s.
“The joy of weekend getaways and peace of mind the great
outdoors offered was something my late husband Jimmie
and I were both passionate about.” Marie says the more
you travel the more you will see. And from there, just let
curiosity guide you to your next grand adventure. Ask
yourself if not now, when?

Derrick City Sams had a wonderful campout at White Oak SP near Bluff City, AR. Great weather awakened the
fishing bug in some while others played games and sat by the lake viewing nature. We give thanks to all for the meals fixed: chicken & spaghetti, taco soup, and fish! Some ate at noon at Big Man's BBQ Place in Bluff City, AR. We had 20 members present for the meeting. During the meeting we decided on March 12-16, 2018 to be at Shady Pines; June 11-15, 2018 to be at Woolly Hollow. December 01, 2017, we are planning to eat at the Buffet Place El Dorado, AR at 11:00 am. Wagonmaster Bennie Langheld reported the next campout will be at Moro Bay State Park, October 30-Nov.03, 2017. Camp hosts will be Tommy & Vona Smith. Vona Smith, Reporter

September. Other chapters camping included Belle Point Sams, Whispering Pines, Thundering Sams, Second Chance, La Petite Roche and Dorcheat Sams. There were 25 rigs in all. Arkansas One had a business meeting on Thursday with guests Connie and Peggy Eppinette and Bill Nery. The next campout will be at Lake Catherine for clean-up in November. The Christmas party will be at the Weaver’s in December. A collection for Toys for Tots will be taken up. Volunteer hours need to be turned in at the end of December so they can be reported to our ASD. The 2017 total should include hours, miles and money. Thank you, Girtie, for the notes and minutes. NOVEMBER Adopt-a-Park Work Week is at Lake Catherine State Park October 29- November 4. Contact James Niblett for reservations. C: 501-590-8715 We usually have a meal or two together…hot dogs, chili, soup, etc., and a big pot luck meal for the park staff on Thursday. For Thursday, the guys are smoking pork, and so far we have beans, potato salad and slaw. Bring a vegetable, dessert, or….?
On Sunday, September 17 four rigs of the Spa City Sams Chapter met at Old Post Road Park in Russellville, AR.
The bugs weren’t too bad so it was a very nice. Tuesday we held our meeting and then went to Old South Restaurant in Russellville for a delicious lunch with great service from the staff. At other times we visited Fowler’s in Dardanelle, Stoby’s in Russellville, and Cat-fish N in Dardanelle. We lingered when we got the chance visiting and enjoying the bug free, air conditioned, cushioned seats until more people started coming in then we relinquished our table and headed back to our rigs. We contributed to a Walmart gift card for some Harvey refugees that were staying at the campground. It was heartwarming to see their reaction to the gift. While there we learned that the Lund’s daughter and her family survived hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and they will be relocating to Fayetteville. We look forward to having more rigs and friends present at the next campout at Lake Catherine for our work-week October 15-20. We have a few sites available still, so if you’d like to join us contact Doug Tinkle 501-680-3470. November 9, 2017 we’ll be eating at Home Plate Café in Hot Springs Village at 11am. December 14, 2017 wewill have our Christmas lunch at Smokin’ in Style in Hot Springs at 11am. The “dirty San-ta gift exchange” gift limit is $10. If you’d like to play please bring a gift. On Sunday, October 15th 8 rigs met at Lake Catherine SP for our annual Adopt-A-Park work week. The weather was good and the food was great. On Monday, we met to wait for the park ranger to give us our assignment for the week. The cold wind picked up and by the afternoon we all decided it was nap-time. We gathered again later in the day and visited some more. Since we couldn’t have a campfire due to the burn ban we all went in for the evening when the sun went down. On Tuesday afternoon the rangers gave the guys a job washing the trash-cans and cleaning fire pits. The ladies picked up trash. Wednesday we continued our work assignments for the day stopping for a bite of lunch and nap-time. We fin-ished the assignments in time to visit a bit before going in. Thursday after lunch we held our meeting then everyone disbursed to their rigs or home. Friday everyone packed up, said our “see ya laters” and headed off to our next adventures. Our campouts are completed for this year. We look forward to seeing what our new Wagonmaster, Charles Shearer and his assistant Kay will have planned for us for 2018. Our next meeting will be at Home Plate in Jessieville on November 9, 2017. We’ll be eating at 11am. December 14, 2017 we will have our Christmas lunch at Smokin’ in Style in Hot Springs at 11am. The “Dirty Santa gift ex-change” gift limit is $10. If you’d like to play please bring a gift.

Eleven rigs from The Whispering Pines Travelers met at the Pecan
Grove RV Park in Lake Village for the Area 6 Friendship. There was a total of 25 rigs present by Friday night. We got to greet old friends and make new ones.
Tom and Girtie provided pizza, salad, and dessert Tuesday night. Those were the biggest pizzas I have ever seen! Wednesday morn-ing included sweet rolls and coffee. After an afternoon filled with activities, we went to JJ’s Restaurant for a buffet dinner of fried chicken, catfish, ribs, salad, vegetables, and dessert. Can you imag-ine how much food was consumed? We had been waiting all day to enjoy it. Thursday morning the guys cooked bacon, sausage and pancakes for all of us. As always, they did a fantastic job. We really look for-ward to that meal. We were divided into two teams for a rousing game of Beanbag Baseball. Our team was very respectful and did
not make a lot of noise, but the other team…..! Guess which team won? That afternoon we had the Chinese auction, live auction, and silent auction. The live auction consisted of the men bidding against each other to raise the price. At one point, Duke was making all kinds of motions, and Gene thought he was bidding. Barbara was getting upset with him. Another time, Bob and Ed had a bidding war over a pair of chairs; but everyone enjoyed it. The park staff prepared a delicious meal of ham, sweet potato casse-role, creamed corn, green beans, and rolls for all of us followed by desserts made by participants.
We played bingo after dinner. We each paid $1 per card, and each bingo was for $10 except the last which was a cover all and was $20. Several of our members won. Barbara won the cover all game. Friday morning found everyone packing up to travel home. It is al-ways a little sad when it is over. Our chapter was well represented and welcomed A. W. and Jolly Martin into our membership during our business meeting.
