Are you thinking what Im thinking? Slide 2 Choose a card and remember it Mind-reading? Slide 3 Are you thinking what Im thinking? Your card is the one that is missing Slide 4 Are you thinking what Im thinking? or is it? Slide 5 Are you thinking what Im thinking? The trick works because we know that people will concentrate on their selected card, but not on the ones they have not selected Slide 6 Are you thinking what Im thinking? Facing reality Watch the film clip about how the brain recognises human faces to help answer the questions in the following slides. Slide 7 Are you thinking what Im thinking? 1.When the baby is shown the two different patterns, why does she respond differently? 2.Why was she shown two different sets of patterns? Slide 8 Are you thinking what Im thinking? 3.What is the link between the blue cross hairs in the photograph below and the equipment being worn by the girl on the right? 4.Describe the difference between the position of the cross hairs when she was looking at a room with no people in and the same room in this photograph. 5.When we look at a human face, do we pay attention to all parts of the face equally? Slide 9 Are you thinking what Im thinking? Not only are we programmed to seek out human faces, we trace out an upside down triangle when we look at someones face. Our eye movements are on the eyes and looking at the mouth, and then between the eyes. The eye region is really the most important part of the human face, and if we measure brain activation, it's driven a lot by the eye region. Slide 10 Are you thinking what Im thinking? Copycat emotions Take a clean wide drinking straw and place it in your mouth as if you were going to drink from it normally (see photo). Listen to a sound track of laughter. Now repeat the experiment, but this time place the straw in your mouth as shown in the second photograph. Discuss what happened and try to give an explanation. Slide 11 Are you thinking what Im thinking? Communicating emotions Work in pairs to role-play a series of meetings between people from two different cultures who have no language in common. Imagine that you are explorers and are meeting people for the first time, who have never been in contact with people like you. You are not permitted to speak using words, but you may wish to use sounds to communicate as well as facial expressions Slide 12 Are you thinking what Im thinking? Communicating emotions What emotion is being communicated in each of the pictures below? Slide 13 Are you thinking what Im thinking? Body-reading Our brains are able to interpret emotions from quite small amounts of information. As well as picking up information from faces, we are also able to interpret peoples movements. This is called the mirror-neuron system, where the neurons in our brain cells are resonating with another persons activity Watch the clip showing how by viewing a sequence of moving dots, we are able to work out the sex of the person, what mood they are in and what activity they are doing.
