18.7 Customary Units for Weight How are ounces and pounds related? Essential Question?
Lesson OpenerMaking ConnectionsInvite students to tell you what they know about weight.
What everyday things are usually measured in weight? (Accept all reasonable responses.) What instruments or tools are used to measure weight? (a scale) What units of weight do you know? (Possible answers: ounces, pounds)
Using the Digital LessonShow students packages or items of different weights, including an object that weighs 8 ounces. Allow students to hold the items and compare how heavy or light the items are. Have them speculate on which item weighs 8 ounces. Ask students to imagine how heavy 4 of the items would be and decide if one of the items shown has a similar weight.
Learning TaskWhat is the problem the students are trying to solve? Connect the story to the problem.
• How many packages were left behind? (4)
• How much does each package weigh? (8 ounces)
• What are you being asked to find? (how much all four packages weigh)
• When you are asked to find the total of something, what operations can you use? (addition, multiplication)
Literacy and MathematicsChoose one or more of the following activities.
• Have students illustrate the problem to show the packages. Have them label each package with its weight.
• Write the words ounce and pound on the board and underline the ou in each word. Have students pronounce the ou sound. Ask them to work with a partner to write a list of other words with ou that have the same sound.

Suppose you weigh a bag of potatoes in pounds, and then
in ounces. Which number would be greater, the number
of ounces or the number of pounds? Explain.

Strategy: Model Language• Students can learn correct pronunciation by repeating sentences that
are modeled by native speakers.• Have students repeat sentences as they solve problems in the lesson.
For example: A _ weighs about one pound. A _ weighs about one ounce. The weight of the object is about _ pounds.
• Make sure students understand the difference in meaning, spelling, and pronunciation between weight and weigh. Write to weigh and weight on the board. Circle the letter t in weight. Point to the words as you say: To weigh is a verb. Weight is a noun. I weigh an object to get its weight.
Unlock the Problem• What are some other foods that might weigh
one ounce? Possible answers: a small box of raisins; a strawberry
• What are some other foods that might weigh one pound? Possible answers: a bag of rice; flour is usually sold in pounds
HandsOn
Math Talk Use Math Talk to check students’ understanding that the number of units needed to weigh something is related to the size of the basic measuring units used. That is, the number of ounces an object weighs is greater than the number of pounds it weighs.
Mathematical Processes
Try This!• How many slices of bread should be shown?
Explain. There should be 16 slices of bread. Possible explanation: We need to show enough slices of bread that will weigh the same as a loaf of bread: one pound. Since 16 ounces is the same weight as 1 pound, and each slice of bread weighs about 1 ounce, there should be 16 slices of bread.
• Can the statement at the bottom be written as 16 oz in 1 lb as well as 16 ounces in 1 pound? Yes. Possible answers: oz is the abbreviation for ounces and lb is the abbreviation for pound.

Materials: base-ten blocks (optional)
• Challenge students to compare weights given in different units by using a table to relate ounces to pounds.
• Draw the table shown below on the board. Then have students work together, using base-ten blocks, if needed, to complete the table.
• After students complete the table, have them complete the following comparison exercises, writing <, >, or =.1. 60 oz < 4 lb 2. 100 oz > 6 lb 3. 120 oz > 7 lb 4. 80 oz = 5 lb

Nine pennies weighabout 1 ounce.
A box of pasta weighsabout 1 pound.
16 ounces = 1 pound
Choose the unit you would use to weigh this dog. Write ounce or pound.
Step 1 Think about whether a dog is light or heavy.
A dog usually weighs more than 9 pennies, or 1 ounce. A dog might weigh as much as several pasta boxes.
Step 2 Choose a unit of weight.
A pound is a good unit for measuring the weight of a dog.

• There are 16 ounces of peaches in 1 bag. What is the weight in pounds of 10 identical bags of peaches? Students should recognize that 16 ounces = 1 pound; so each bag weighs one pound; so 10 bags is 10 pounds
• What is the weight in pounds of 100 bags of the same bags of peaches? 100 bags is 100 pounds
ProblemsProblem 8 explores changing ounces to pounds.Students draw representations to help them solve the problem about putting trail mix into bags weighing 1 pound each.
In Problem 9, students are to use precise math language to explain their answer.
COMMON ERRORSError When drawing to change ounces to pounds, students will not circle the correct number of ounces.
Example
Springboard to Learning Remind students that there are 16 ounces in each pound, so they should check that they have drawn the correct number of items and circled groups of 16 to represent the measure.

TEXAS Test Prep CoachTest Prep Coach helps teachers to identify common errors that students can make.
In the Test Prep exercise, if students selected:
A They only considered one cap.
B They did not read the problem correctly.
D They thought that 8 ounces equaled 1 pound.
