Introduction – What is a Digital Enterprise?

At the Institute for Digital Transformation, we are focused on studying the impact on organizations and their leaders as we transition from the Industrial Era into what we call the Digital Era. In its simplest form, therefore, we believe a Digital Enterprise is an organization that has completed this transition. But the result of that transformation is an organization that looks very different from today’s typical organizations.

Modern enterprise organizations are vestiges of the Industrial Era. They were created, built and organized in and for a different time. This includes the physical and logical manifestations of our enterprise organizations: buildings, capital investments, organizational structures, policies and procedures and, bluntly, most everything about how the typical enterprise organization works. But more importantly, it also includes the very essence of our organizations: their culture.


Introduction – Why do Transformations Fail?

Culture is why most digital transformation efforts fail. A successful digital transformation is not, in fact, a technology-driven endeavor. It is first and foremost a cultural and organizational transformation. Digital technology, such as video streaming and the internet of things, are merely the catalysts and then ultimately, the product.

More than that, however, an effective digital transformation should not be undertaken to develop a specific “digital capability,” but rather should be focused on developing a “cultural capability” that will ready the organization for the unique pressures and demands of the digital era – an agile organization. The digital era will place demands on enterprises that will run counter to most of the well understood operating paradigms of the past. Multi-year planning cycles are being replaced with dynamic strategies. Product cycles, both in terms of development, as well as in terms of marketability, have shortened dramatically. Competitors are emerging at a more rapid rate and from unforeseen quarters as barriers to entry fall. Most industries are seeing these things happen right now.


Those organizations that are successfully making this transition are doing so by developing four specific cultural capabilities that we deem the Digital Enterprise Readiness (DX Readiness) Framework:

Course Goal - Introduction to the Fundamentals of Digital Transformation:

• Operational Sustainability

• Organizational Agility

• Strategic Agility

Learning Outcomes

• Provide an examination of what a Digital Enterprise is and how this differs from Enterprises in the Industrial Era

• Develop a knowledge of the four Dimensions of Digital Enterprise Readiness

• Focus on organizational culture and agility as the foundations of Digital Readiness.


Digital Transformation Intermediates

Course Goals

• Participants attending these intermediate courses will gain a deeper understanding of each of the Dimensions and their relationship to each other

• The course will allow participants to prepare for the Practitioner course through full understanding of each Dimension’s capabilities

Learning Outcomes:

• Students will be able to apply Dimension capabilities to a relevant case study

• Relate the Dimension capabilities to outline Readiness shortcomings and opportunities

• Select, apply, and analyze apply improvement actions to improve organizational DX Readiness for Transformation for specific Dimension.


Digital Transformation Practitioner

Course Goals• Participants attending this course are expected to take on Digital transformation

consulting roles

• The course will help participants develop skills to take on these roles and deliver value through a case study experience.

Learning Outcomes:• Students will be able to analyze the Four Dimensions of Digital Readiness to

prepare an organization for Digital Transformation

• Develop an improvement plan and explain proposed improvements

• Select, apply, and analyze apply improvement actions to improve organizational DX Readiness for Transformation across all Dimensions for an Enterprise

• Evaluate improvement results and justify next steps in a Transformation effort.

We therefore need to create organizations and leaders who are comfortable operating with uncertainty and who can rapidly evolve their operating models to adapt to changing markets and directions. That is a transformational culture. That is transformational leadership.
