Welcome to Resurrection!

W e extend a warm welcome to each one present. As we unite together in worship, may we experience

together the grace and mercy of our God through his life-giving Word and sacraments. Guests, below is some information that may help us host you well in the Lord’s house. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. Visitor Information

W orship at Resurrection Lutheran Church follows the historic liturgy of the Church. Our worship

service is designed to give our Savior thanks for the salvation He won for us. Lutheran worship is really a conversation between God and his people. He speaks to us in His Word; we praise Him and respond to Him in song. We confess our sins and needs; He provides the forgiveness Jesus accomplished at the cross, and helps us with our individual needs.

W orship will follow the service folder, guiding us in our dialogue with the Lord. Feel free to participate at whatever level you are comfortable. Where indicated you

will find some of the hymns and psalms in the Christian Worship hymnal (the red book under your chair.) Whenever the words are printed in bold, the congregation is welcome to join in responding or singing. May God bless us as we place Him at the center of our worship.

Bathrooms: Down the main hall, across from the drinking fountains.

Child's Room: The room located at the rear of the church serves as a cry room or nursing room (with rocker). The door is located in the gathering area.

Children’s Bulletin: special bulletins designed for young children are available.

Leaders: Pastor Nathan Strutz & Vicar Eric Melso Pianist: Lisa Hermanson

Personal Prayers for Worship are found on pages 10-11 in the front of the Christian Worship hymnal located under your chair.

Changes to future RLC Book Club meetings Please join us for the RLC book club meetings at 7PM in the youth room at church for discussion and fellowship. *There will not be a meeting in December. The book meetings have been changed to:

* January 18th: “The End of Your Life Book Club” by: Will Schwalbe

* February 16th: “Unplanned: the Dramatic True Story of a Former Planned Parenthood Leader’s Eye-opening Journey Across the Life Line” by: Abby Johnson

November Council Highlights The council continued reading through the Bible and discussing. Very good questions are being asked and answered. Athena Young was welcomed into membership. She had been a member at RLC before moving to Watertown a few years ago. She has moved back to the area. Welcome back, Athena! Mianna Woller was granted a transfer to Good News, as she has moved closer to our daughter congregation in Mt. Horeb. Congregational finances are in good shape. Commitments will be used to help determine the budget for next fiscal year (it's not too late to turn in your commitment.) The council held a good portion of the meeting jointly with Our Redeemer in Madison. The possibility of a new church location in Fitchburg was discussed, along with ways to better promote the grade school at Our Redeemer, especially among RLP Prek families. Our Redeemer is in the process of calling a second pastor. It was agreed that this annual gathering is a benefit to both congregations and will be done again next year. The council-men enjoyed informal fellowship after the meeting and continue to strengthen ties in Christ. ************************************************************************************************************** New International Version (NIV) Holy Bible, New International Version®, NIV® Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.® Used by permission. A note from RLC member, Heather Stelzer, regarding a job opportunity: I own a direct sales business that I run from home, and am looking for a part time Administrative Assistant. Are you fun, detailed oriented, and maybe even a “closet” perfectionist? Do the words organized, self-motivated, people friendly, and task oriented fit you and your personality? If you said yes to a few of these questions, my assistant posi-tion could be a perfect fit for you! Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, and online access is a must! Most tasks will be able to be completed in the comfort of your own home, with some work to be done in my home office. There is flexibility, with the opportunity to build your own schedule. I am looking for someone with high levels of organization and the ability to manage multiple tasks at once. If interested in learning more about this part time role, please contact Heather Stelzer for more information at: [email protected]. Wine Bottles? The Advent by Candlelight committee is collecting wine bottles made out of blue glass. If you have any, please put them in the box near the bulletin board. We will be collecting them until Thanksgiving. The Educational Support Committee (ESC) The ESC is currently seeking two people to fill vacancies on our committee. The committee exists to support the growing 3K and 4K Preschool programs and teachers at Resurrection Lutheran Preschool. Meetings are usually held once-a-month during the school year. If interested, please contact Mike Korth at 845-5627, or [email protected]. Resurrection Celebrates Ten Year Facility Anniversary - Thursday, January 14th at 6:30PM and Sunday, January 17th On Sunday, January 17 at the regular 9.00 a.m. service, Resurrection will give thanks to God for ten years of the facility built to his glory. Pastor Doug Tomhave, the first pastor of Resurrection, will preach for the service, which will focus on the symbolism of the facility and its distinctive Lutheran features. Pastor Tomhave will also lead the Bible study on the history of Resurrection up to and including the facility construction. A potluck will follow Bible study at 11.30 on Sunday. Members of Resurrection who were involved in the building process will share humorous stories and anecdotes about the facility construction process. Join us to give thanks and glory to God. An RSVP if you plan to attend would be appreciated, especially for the potluck. Email to [email protected]

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: CONFESSION OF SINS

Leader: Beloved in the Lord: Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. All: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie All:

Christmas Caroling in Verona! - Friday, December 4th, 4:45PM Please join us for the forth annual Christmas caroling event in Verona on December 4th. We will meet at 4.45 pm at the Senior Center in Verona (108 Paoli Street). We will carol outside as the Christmas lights are turned on in Verona, as well as be part of a live weather forecast. We will continue caroling inside the Senior Center during a chili supper and then enjoy chili and hot dogs courtesy of the Verona Area Firefighters. Hundreds of people attend this event. It is a great way to proclaim Jesus' love in our community. Spread the Good News! Jesus is Born! Saturday, December 5th and 12th With Christmas approaching, there will be two special opportunities to spread the Good News. 1. Saturday, December 5. Youth and adults will distribute Christmas postcards, inviting people to Christmas for Kids and our Christmas Eve and Day services. We have 3000 cards to hand deliver. This will be a non-talking canvass. Simply walk along and leave the postcard in the door. Drivers especially are needed to transport youth.

2. Saturday, December 12. Good News and Resurrection will work together on a "prospect canvass." We will visit people who have had contact with our congregation: attended worship, expressed interest, attend Prek, etc. Students from Lakeside Lutheran in Lake Mills will be assisting us. Meet at Good News in Mt. Horeb at 9.00 a.m. We will canvass in Mt. Horeb in the morning, come to Resurrection for lunch and then canvass in the Verona area in the afternoon. Last year several people attended worship because of the postcards distributed and the personal visits that were made. Speak with Gene Cate or pastor for more information. Advent by Candlelight - Sunday, December 6th Advent by Candlelight is a special night; a night to prepare ourselves for the busy Christmas season and set our mindset and priorities to the best gift ever given, God's own Son, Jesus, our Savior from sin. The date is set for December 6th, at 6:30pm. Sign-up in the entryway to attend, bring a guest, and donate a dessert or decorate a table.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON: GENESIS 19:15-17,23-29 NIV 15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.”

16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them. 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!” 23 By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens. 25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 Early the next morning Abraham got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the LORD. 28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

29 So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

Announcements & Upcoming Events

Stewardship Commitment Update As of Sunday, November 22nd, RLC members have returned 26 Stewardship of Time & Talent commitment forms, and 36 Stewardship of Treasure forms. If you haven’t yet completed these forms, we ask you to please complete them and drop them off in the baskets in the narthex or place them in the offering basket during worship. As was discussed during the stewardship Bible studies, there is benefit in pausing to recognize the blessings we all receive from the Lord, and planning our grateful response. Our council uses these commitment forms for budgeting evangelism, Christian education, Bible studies, Vicar program, worship, fellowship activities, synod mission offerings, Sunday School and Pre-school. They also use the Time and Talents commitments to provide committee leaders with volunteer lists. Blank forms and envelopes are still available on the table in the narthex as well. -Bill Baumann, Stewardship Chairman

December Events With Christmas coming soon, there are many events

to help spread the good news of Jesus’ birth! Putting up the Christmas Tree We will need a couple of strong people to put the Christmas tree up in the Narthex after church today so it can be decorated that week for Advent for Candlelight. No one needs to decorate, just get it put together and bring in the smaller tree from the shed as well. All other Christmas decorations have been brought in already. Advent Worship - Begins Thursday, December 3rd Advent means coming. It's the time of the year when we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. Three special services will be held on Thursday December 3, 10 and 17. These services will be different from any of our Sunday services. They will be at the regular time of 6.30 p.m. A meal will be served prior to each service, beginning at 5.30 p.m. The services will focus on three songs from the Bible. December 3 Vicar Melso will preach on Mary's song of joy when she heard she would be the mother of Jesus. December 10th Pastor Moldenhauer from Our Redeemer will preach on Zechariah's song after the birth of John the Baptist. John was the one to prepare the way for Jesus. December 17 Pastor Strutz will preach on the song of Simeon we frequently sing after communion. Simeon was waiting to die and ready to go to his heavenly home in peace after seeing the

SECOND LESSON AND SERMON TEXT: 1 THESSALONIANS 3:9-13 NIV 9 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? 10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. 12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for every-one else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones. O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei People: Please be seated ON COMMUNING

Non-alcoholic wine is available for those who desire it. The non-alcoholic wine is white.

The Bible teaches that communing together signifies a oneness in faith, life and worship (1 Cor. 10:16-17). Reception of the Lord's Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray. It would be unloving of us as a congregation to invite visitors to the Lord’s table. We would not be so presumptuous as to make any visitor take a stand with our doctrine and practice without first providing opportunity to explore the Bible's teachings with them.(1 Cor. 11:27-29). Our pastor would be happy to explore this unity with you, on the basis of God's Word, so that you might commune with us in the future.

Page 9

The Christian Church has for centuries read the Gospel lesson, the very words of Jesus, in the midst of the congregation during the Advent season. This symbolizes the coming of Christ into the midst of our world at Christmas. We will follow that tradition throughout the Advent season. The congregation is asked to turn and face the reader. Please Stand GOSPEL LESSON: LUKE 21:25-36 NIV

Leader: The Gospel according to Luke chapter twenty-one. People:

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. 26 People will faint from terror, appre-hensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

32 “Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.” Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY: 2 “Savior of the Nations, Come” (in the red book under your chair)

Leader: Our Lord Jesus Christ on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “ Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

THE SACRAMENT

PREFACE Leader: The Lord be with you. People:

Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: Leader: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, whose way John the Baptist prepared when he called people to repentance and pointed to Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

Page 11

SERMON BASED ON: 1 THESSALONIANS 3:9-13

Are you ready for Jesus to come?

Questions to consider while hearing the sermon:

1. What good purpose can presents, lights, trees serve to help us get ready for Jesus?

2. Can our thanks ever be enough?

3. What's unusual about Paul not being able to find words?

4. How does your presence here bring joy to others?

5. What doesn't it mean, "lacking in your faith"?

6. What might be lacking in your Christian faith?

7. Why bother being ready for Jesus to come?

8. Would you ever say anyone loved you too much?

9. Who are the holy ones? Are you one of them?

10. State why you are ready for Jesus to come.

For further discussion/Vine and Branches:

Share a family Christmas tradition. How can you focus that on Jesus' coming?

Talk about the joy you have at seeing others in worship. Are there special obstacles of time, distance, age, health that others overcome that increase your joy?

If comfortable, share something that is lacking in your faith. Ask the group to provide the instruction, the strength, the courage to fill that lack.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Leader: Almighty God, we long for an end to the struggles of this mortal life and for the start of everlasting life with Christ. Keep us from becoming contented with this life and from despair over the burdens of the flesh. We pray ever more earnestly to see Your face and to know in full the joy of Your presence. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Leader: Almighty God, we know how easily the good things You have supplied can be abused and used for harm instead of good. Deliver all who struggle with addiction, restore us when we fall and bring us the strength of Your Word and Sacraments to sustain us. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Leader: Almighty God, we enjoy the many and rich blessings You have showered upon our nation. Grant to us wise and faithful leaders who will help us use Your bounty for good. Establish Your peace among the nations, and bring to nothing the plots of those who delight in evil, terror and violence. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Leader: Almighty God, we claim nothing as our own, for all things come from You. Accept the worship of our lips, the service of our lives and the tithes and offerings we bring in Jesus’ name. Grant that we may use all things for Your glory, for the blessing of those in our care and for the support of Your Church. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
