What is “Change Management”

18

Managing Change in Organizations : A PRACTICE GUIDE

“Change Management is a comprehensive, cyclic and structured approach for

transitioning individuals, groups and organizations from a current state to a

future state with intended benefits.”

PMBOK Guide (Fifth Edition) – “Change Management Plan”

Provides direction for managing the change control process and documents

the formal change control board (CCB)

Elements of change management appear throughout

PMI’s foundational standards but are not specifically

identified with the phrase “change management”

Change Management roles?

19

Effective change management requires enhanced

capabilities in the portfolio, program and project teams.

These capabilities should be part of a team’s

core capabilities

Are Project Managers capable of assuming greater responsibility for change?

• Individual Change

• Team Change

• Organizational Change

What is “Change Management”?

we can never really hope to manage large-scale change”

This doesn’t happen spontaneously, it needs encouragement and it is the role of

the Change Manager to provide that encouragement.

Change is about persuading people that they should abandon their old ways of

working and put in the effort to learn and apply a new way of doing things.

Change Management is a growing professional discipline.

Organisations are coming to the realisation that they cannot leave things to chance.

PMI’s view of Change Management

(Source: Managing Change in Organizations: A Practice Guide ~ PMI ® (2013) p7

It brings together two sets of ideas developed in separate domains:

• Change Management – Organizational Development & HR management

• Project, Program & Portfolio Management

22

PMI views change management is an essential capability that cascades across

and throughout portfolio, program and project management.

PMI Change Life Cycle Framework

(Source: Managing Change in Organizations: A Practice Guide ~ PMI ® (2013) p19

“The change life cycle framework, is concurrent set of sub processes

where multiple activities take place in an ordered but non-sequential way”

“It is an iterative model where adaptive change occurs on a continual basis

in response to evolving circumstances”

23

Project Management and Sustain Change

24

(Source: Managing Change in Organizations: A Practice Guide ~ PMI ® (2013) p95

Projects that end at

“Deliver project outputs”

need to handover

management of the

remaining activities

Projects are concerned with the Implement Change and Manage Transition phases.

“Deliverables” or “Outputs” focused.

All projects need to perform elements of Sustain Change as part of their activities.

Benefits Realization a key competence

27

Develop a culture and desire to focus on “Benefits Realization”

because it is possible to manage benefits and not realize them!
