Both the ES major and minor are interdisciplinary courses of study focused on Europe’s rich cultural history and its ongoing contributions to the modern world. By receiving training in a range of disciplines, students develop a strong understanding of European history, arts, and current affairs, and marketable skills as clear writers, agile thinkers, and culturally sensitive citizens of the world. Students may expect networking opportunities with both faculty and fellow students with similar interests and goals. MINOR IN EUROPEAN STUDIES ARE YOU INTERESTED IN EUROPEAN STUDIES?

EUROPEAN STUDIES AT BYUBesides the minor, BYU also offers a BA in European Studies, a relatively short degree program that may often be combined with a secondary major in a European language or with minors such as Global Business Literacy and International Development. CURRICULAR FLEXIBILITYThe European Studies minor offers students considerable flexibility in selecting courses, allowing them to tailor their education to their personal interests and to draw upon the expertise of Europeanists across campus. Since the minor was designed in part to build upon study abroad experiences, those who have completed a program in London, Madrid, Paris, or elsewhere in Europe often need only two or three additional courses to complete the minor.

REQUIRED COURSESBoth of the required courses for the minor, EUROP 200 (Introduction to European Studies) and HIST 250 (European History from 1500 to the Present), are taught only during fall semester.

ELECTIVE COURSESOnce students have completed the two required courses and the GE foreign language requirement, they need only complete nine credit hours of coursework in European history, politics, or humanities, three of which may be double-counted with the student’s major or another minor.

BROADEN YOUR EDUCATIONThe European Studies minor allows students who have completed a study abroad, internship, or mission in Europe—or those who simply love European history, culture, or politics—to deepen their knowledge of the continent and earn a credential that signals their international interests. Students who have completed the GE foreign language requirement in a European language need only take fifteen additional credit hours to complete the minor, and many of these credits can be earned through European internship or study abroad programs.

ENHANCE YOUR MARKETABILITY

WHY MINOR IN EUROPEAN STUDIES?PROFESSIONAL NETWORKS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCESBy virtue of the program’s interdisciplinary nature, European Studies minors can take courses from over 120 BYU professors with specializations including European languages, politics, literature, history, music, art, and business. ES students also have an inside track on such opportunities as internships in Brussels and at the Scottish Parliament, presenting at prestigious undergraduate research conferences, and competing on BYU’s Model EU team. Closer to home, ES students have the chance to meet with visiting European diplomats, work as professors’ teaching and research assistants, and meet like-minded students through the European Studies Student Association (ESSA).
