Topics in Rig Veda

Ruk is a metrical composition. The word ruk (ऋक् ‌) may be defined as follows.

that by means of which the deities can be glorified is a ruk (Shabdakalpadrum). means a rucha is a metrical mantra means a sentence in which the stanzas (charan) are arranged in a rhythm (Chanda) is known as a ruk

The aphorisms (sukta) from the Rugveda mainly encompass the praise or description of deities such as Indra, Agni, Varun, Marut, etc.

Besides aphorisms on various subjects such as society, spiritual rites (sanskar), composition of the universe, philosophy, etc. are also found in the Rugveda.

Page 26: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 26

Topics in Rig VedaGenerally the aphorisms are classified as

1. Devata Sukta (aphorisms on deities), 2. Dhruvapad Sukta (aphorisms with specific chorus

suffixed to the mantras), 3. Katha Sukta (aphorisms of stories), 4. Samvad Sukta (aphorisms of conversations), Important 3

conversations are between Pururava-Urvashi (10.95),

Yama-Yami (10.10) and Sarama-Pani (10.108)

5. Danstuti Sukta (aphorisms glorifying offering), 6. Tattvadnyan Sukta (aphorisms on philosophy), 7. Sanskar Sukta (aphorisms on spiritual rites)

8. Mantrik Sukta (aphorisms of followers of mantras), to overcome Tuberculosis, bad omens, nightmares, black magic etc

Hindutva 27

Yajur Veda1. Yajus (यजुस्‌) means mantra in prosaic form.

2. The Yajurveda is thus a compilation of the specific mantras to be chanted when performing different sacrificial fires and the specific regulations to be observed during it.

3. Knowledge, action and worship are the three categories of a successful living.

4. Yajur Ved is an encyclopedia on Vedic Ritualistic Worship (Karmakand).

5. The Yajurveda has two parts - the Krushna and the Shukla.

6. The chief teacher (acharya) of the Yajurveda was Sage Vaishampayan. He created several disciples like

Yadnyavalkya.’(12)

Page 28: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 28

Yajur VedaThe chief teacher (acharya) of the Yajurveda was Sage Vaishampayan. He created several disciples like Yadnyavalkya.’(12)

Once Vaishampayan was angry with Yadnyavalkya for some reason and asked the latter to return His Yajurveda.

Yadnyavalkya vomited it out.

The other disciples then assumed the form of francoline patridges and swallowed it.

[It is from this patridge (tittir) that the names Taittiriya Brahman and Taittiriya Upanishad were derived.]

Page 29: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 29

Yajur Veda

Thereafter Yadnyavalkya worshipped the Sun deity and procured the Yajurveda for himself, from Him.

As the Sun deity returned the Yajurveda to Yadnyavalkya in the form of a horse (speech) that commentary is called the Vajasaneyi Sanhita.

Yadnyavalkya glorified His new Veda by naming it the Shukla Yajurveda.

To counter this Vaishampayan began to call the former Yajurveda the Krushna Yajurveda.

Page 30: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 30

Sama Veda

Meaning of the word sama is dear or the promise of a lover.

In some contexts it is also used as singing. It is this meaning which applies to the popular Samaveda. Many mantras from the Rugveda have been incorporated into the Samaveda. The songs composed based on them are known as sama. In some places mantras from the Rugveda itself are called sama. Mantras from the Rugveda constitute the foundation of sama. A quote in the Chandogya Upanishad states “ऋचि अध्‍‌यूढं  साम‌which means the sama are those which are based on the verses (rucha)”.

Page 31: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 31

Sama VedaA special definition of the word sama is found in the text the Bruhadaranyak (1.3.22). It says

सा  अमश्चेति ‌ साम्‍‌न: सामत्‍‌वम‌ ।Meaning: Sa means a verse (rucha) and am means musical notes such as gandhar, etc. Both together constitute a sama.

Thus melodious singing of the verses is sama as per its definition.

To illustrate the close association between verses and sama in the Aitareya Brahman text they have even been imagined as a married couple.

Origin: It is said that this has originated from the sun. The Taittiriya Sanhita states that Brahmans (priests) have been created from the Samaveda.

Hindutva 32

Atharva Veda

http://www.hindujagruti.org/hinduism/knowledge/article/how-were-four-vedas-created.html

‘The Atharvaveda has acquired its name from Sage Atharva, a descendant of the lineage of Sage Angiras who first got a vision of the Veda and then compiled it. This Veda is considered less sacred than the other three Vedas because it contains very little information regarding sacrificial fires. A fifth of the Atharvaveda is taken from the Rugveda.

Hindutva• How Old is Hinduism ?

• When and where was Hinduism Founded ?

Page 39: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 39

What is Religion• Religion is realisation, not talk, nor

doctrine, nor theories, however beautiful they may be. It is being and becoming, not hearing or acknowledging; it is the whole soul becoming changed into what it believes. That is religion

• -Swami Vivekananda

Page 40: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 40

How old is Hinduism• When the ancestors of the

present advanced nations like USA, UK, France, Germany were living in caves and were jumping from tree to tree like apes - even in that remote past Hindus had attained a very high civilization.

Page 41: Are all religions equal hindutva

Oldest Living TraditionReligions come and go

• Ancient Civilizations like Assyrian, Sumerian, Babylonian, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Mayan, Inca, and Aztec civilizations and their religions have died.

• Hinduism older than them is still alive and active.

Essence of Hinduism1. Oldest Religion

1. Hinduism is an ancient religion and has evolved over the course of centuries.

2. Saraswati River discovered is 10,000 years old.3. Mohen Jo Daro & Harappa is 5000 Years old.4. Hinduism has been almost continuously

modified over the long course of its history.. Although the religious practices have evolved and continue to change, the philosophy remains in the Vedas

Page 46: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 46

Essence of Hinduism2. Form of God

• We believe that God exists in two "forms" : (i) in a  formless, omnipresent, and omnipotent form called "Brahman" which (symbolized in the form of "O M") and (ii) in the form of various icons and images that help us better imagine his attributes compared to an abstract form

Page 47: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 47

Essence of Hinduism3. Freedom of Worship

• Regardless of the form we worship, we are aware that all the different forms eventually lead to the same God and each of us is free to choose his or her own path to worship and salvation [iv]. The forms that are most commonly worshipped include the Trinity of (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). The creative energy is frequently personified as "Devi" and is an essential representation of feminine power and as the source of all life

Page 48: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 48

Essence of Hinduism4. Karma

• Hindus believe in the theory of "karma" and in the cycle of life and death (Note that we believe in the "cycle" of birth and re-birth as opposed to just one instance of re-incarnation or re-birth)

Page 49: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 49

Essence of Hinduism5. Essence of Karma

• The essence of "karma" is that actions have consequences that cannot be escaped. The belief in "karma" (e.g. that our predicament is the result of our past actions) gives us strength to accept things we can't change [v]. We also believe that we can shape our future by the deeds that we do and the spirit in which we do them

Page 50: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 50

Essence of Hinduism6. Salvation for all

• Hindus believe that lasting peace & happiness (salvation or "Moksha") can only be achieved by moving beyond this cycle of life and death.

• No eternal Hell for anyone.

Page 51: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 51

Essence of Hinduism7. Vedas

• We believe that the core of our religious belief and philosophy is found in the Vedas and Upanishads. The "Bhagvad Gita" (literally "The Song of God") explains some of these values in a simple and easy to understand form. Our epics (Ramayana , Mahabaratha and the Puranas) illustrate the core of our values in the form of stories

Page 52: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 52

Essence of Hinduism8. The Power of Prayers

• We believe in the power of prayer, sacred hymns and pious thoughts. We usually have a place in the house for a private altar ("Devghar") which is a representation of the "Abode of God". On special occasions (weddings, birth, marriage) and festivals, we visit temples for special prayers

Page 53: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 60

Nine Belief’s of Hinduism7. Satguru, Enlightened Master

• Is essential to know the Transcendent Absolute,

• Guru removes our ignorance and takes us in the path of spiritualism

• Personal discipline, good conduct, purification, pilgrimage, self-inquiry, meditation, and surrender in God are equally essential in addition to Sat Guru.

Page 54: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 61

Nine Belief’s of Hinduism8. Life

• All Life is sacred

• Hence all life should be loved and revered

• Hence practice Ahimsa, non-injury, in thought, word and deed.

• Respect Animals, Birds and Nature

Page 55: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 62

Nine Belief’s of Hinduism9. Salvation

• Hindus believe that no religion teaches the only way to salvation above all others, but that all genuine paths are facets of God’s Light, deserving tolerance and understanding.

Four Facts of Hinduism1. Karma

• According as one acts, so does he become. One becomes virtuous by virtuous actions, bad by bad action. Yajur Veda, Br Upanishad 4.4.5

• Through Karma, our thoughts, emotions and deeds - whether good, bad or mixed- return to us.

• Karma is not fate. We have Free Will.• No God or external force is controlling our lives.• To blame others is weakness.• To be responsible for our karma is strength.

Page 57: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 64

Four Facts of Hinduism2. Reincarnation

• After death, the soul goes to the next world, bearing in mind the subtle impressions of its deeds, and after reaping their harvest returns again to this world of action. Thus, he who has desires continues subject to rebirth. - Yajur Veda, Br. Upanishad 4.4.6

• Reincarnation - natural cycle birth, death and rebirth

• We are not the body, but the immortal soul

Page 58: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 65

Four Facts of Hinduism2. Reincarnation - Death

• Death - never to be feared

• It is transition for the soul

• Moksha or liberation from rebirth or reincarnation is obtained after all the karmas have been resolved

Hindutva 66

Four Facts of Hinduism3. One All Pervasive Supreme Being

• Self-resplendent, formless, unoriginated and pure, that all-pervading Being is both within and without. He transcends even the transcendent, unmanifest, causal state of the universe. - Atharva Veda, Mundaka Upanishad 2.1.2

• Sat - Real, timeless, formless, spaceless,

• Chit - Pure Consciousness, Intelligent

• Anand - Bliss and the source of eternal bliss

Hindutva 67

Four Facts of Hinduism4. Dharma

• There is nothing higher than dharma. Verily, that which is dharma is Truth. - Yajur Veda, Br. Upanishad 1.4.14

• God’s divine law prevailing on every level of existence - from the sustaining cosmic order to religious and moral laws which bind us in harmony with that order.

• Hindu Dharma is embodied in 10 Yamas (restraints) and 10 Niyamas (observances).

Page 61: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 68

Four Facts of Hinduism4. Dharma - Yamas & Niyamas

• 10 Yamas (Restraints) - noninjury, truthfuness, nonstealing, sexual purity, patience, steadfastness, compassion, straight forwardness, moderate appetite.

• 10 Niyamas (observances) - purity, remorse, contentment, giving, faith, worship, scriptural study, cognition, vows, recitation and austerity.

Hindutva 168

Peace of Mind• Peace of mind is the most sought after 'commodity' in human life. It appears that

most of us are in a state of perpetual restlessness. On analyzing the causes of this restlessness, I have ventured to find for myself ten solutions that need to be followed religiously if we are serious about achieving perfect peace of mind.

• 1. Do not interfere in others' business Most of us create our own problems by interfering too often in others' affairs. We do so because somehow we have convinced ourselves that our way is the best way, our logic is the perfect logic, and those who do not conform to our thinking must be criticized and steered to the right direction, our direction. This kind of attitude on our part denies the existence of individuality and consequently the existence of God, for God has created each one of us in a unique way. No two human beings can think or act in exactly the same way. All men or women act the way they do because they are prompted to do so by the Divine within them. There is God to look after everything. Why are you bothered? Mind your own business and you will have your peace.

• 2. Forget and forgive This is the most powerful aid to peace of mind. We often nurture ill feeling inside our heart for the person who insults or harms us. We forget that the insult or injury was done to us once but by nourishing the grievance we go on excavating the wound forever. Therefore it is essential that we cultivate the art of forgiving and forgetting. Believe in the justice of God and the doctrine of Karma. Let Him judge the act of the one who insulted you. Life is too short to waste in such trifles. Forget, forgive, and march on.

Page 162: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 169

Peace of Mind• 3. Do not crave for recognition This world is full of selfish people. They

seldom praise anybody without selfish motive. They may praise you today because you are rich and have power but no sooner you are powerless, they will forget your achievement and start criticizing you. Moreover, no one is perfect. Then why do you value the words of praise of another mortal like you? Why do you crave for recognition? Believe in yourself. People's praises do not last long. Do your duties ethically and sincerely and leave the rest to God.

• 4. Do not be jealous We all have experienced how jealousy can disturb our peace of mind. You know you work harder than your colleagues in the office but they get promotions, you do not. You started a business several years ago but you are not as successful as your neighbor whose business is only one year old. Should you be jealous? No, remember everybody's life is shaped by his previous Karma that has now become his destiny. If you are destined to be rich, not all the world can stop you. If you are not so destined, no one can help you either. Nothing will be gained by blaming others for your misfortune. Jealousy will not get you anywhere, but will only give you restlessness.

Page 163: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 170

Peace of Mind• 5. Change yourself according to the environment If you try to change the

environment single handedly, the chances are you may fail. Instead, change yourself to suit the environment. As you do this, even the environment, which has remained unfriendly for you, will mysteriously appear to be congenial and harmonious.

• 6. Endure what cannot be cured This is the best way to turn a disadvantage into an advantage. Every day we face numerous inconveniences, ailments, irritations and accidents that are beyond our control. We must learn to endure them cheerfully thinking, "God will it so, so be it". God's logic is beyond our comprehension. Believe it and you will gain in patience, in inner strength, in will power.

• 7. Do not bite more than you can chew This maxim should be always remembered. We often tend to take more responsibilities than we are capable to carry out. This is done to satisfy our ego. Know your limitations. Spend your free time on prayers, introspection and meditation. This will reduce those thoughts in your mind, which make you restless. Fewer the thoughts, greater is the peace of mind.

Page 164: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 171

Peace of Mind• 8. Meditate regularly Meditation makes the mind thoughtless. This is the highest

state of peace of mind. Try and experience it. If you meditate earnestly for half an hour every day, you will tend to become calm during the remaining twenty-three and a half hours. Your mind will not be disturbed as much as before. This will increase your efficiency and you will turn out more work in less time.

• 9. Never leave the mind vacant An empty mind is devil's workshop. All evil deeds start in the mind. Keep your mind occupied in something positive, something worthwhile. Actively follow a hobby. You must decide what you value more - money or peace of mind. Your hobby, like social work may not always earn you more money, but you will have a sense of fulfillment and achievement. Even if you are resting physically, occupy yourself in healthy reading or mental chanting of God's name (japa).

• 10. Do not procrastinate and never regret Do not waste time in wondering "should I or shouldn't I?" Days, weeks, months and years may be wasted in that futile mental debating. You can never plan enough because you can never anticipate all future happenings. Always remember God has His own plan too. Value your time and do things. It does not matter if you fail the first time. You can rectify your mistakes and succeed the next time. Sitting back and worrying will lead to nothing. Learn from your mistakes but do not brood over the past. DO NOT REGRET! Whatever happened was destined to happen only that way. Take it as the will of God. You do not have the power to alter the course of God's will. Why cry?

Hinduism:1) Hindus believe in the divinity of the vedas, the world's most

ancient scripture, and venerate the Agamas as equally revealed. These primordial hymns are God's word and the bedrock of Sanatana Dharma, the eternal religion which has neither beginning nor end.

2) Hindus believe in a one, all-pervasive supreme being who is both immanent and transcendent, both Creator and Unmanifest Reality.

3) Hindus believe that the universe undergoes endless cycles of creation, preservation and dissolution.

Hinduism:4) Hindus believe in karma, the law of cause and effect by which each individual creates his own destiny by his thoughts, words and deeds.

5) Hindus believe that the soul reincarnates, evolving through many births until all karmas have been resolved, and moksha, spiritual knowledge and liberation from the cycle of rebirth, is attained. Not a single soul will be eternally deprived of this destiny.

6) Hindus believe that divine beings exist in unseen worlds and that temple worship, rituals, sacraments as well as personal devotionals create a communion with these devas and Gods.

Hinduism:7) Hindus believe that a spiritually awakened master, or satguru, is essential to know the Transcendent Absolute, as are personal discipline, good conduct, purification, pilgrimage, self-inquiry and meditation.

8) Hindus believe that all life is sacred, to be loved and revered, and therefore practice ahimsa, "noninjury.“

9) Hindus believe that no particular religion teaches the only way to salvation above all others, but that all genuine religious paths are facets of God's Pure Love and Light, deserving tolerance and understanding.

Christianity:Christians believe that the bible is the uniquely inspired and fully trustworthy word of God. It is the final authority for Christians in matters of belief and practice, and though it was written long ago, it continues to speak to believers today.

2) Christians believe in one God in three persons. He is distinct from his creation, yet intimately involved with it as its sustainer and redeemer.

3) Christians believe that the world was created once by the divine will, was corrupted by sin, yet under God's providence moves toward final perfection.

Christianity:4) Christians believe that, through God's grace and favor, lost

sinners are rescued from the guilt, power and eternal consequences of their evil thoughts, words and deeds.

5) Christians believe that it is appointed for human beings to die once and after that face judgment. In Adam's sin, the human race was spiritually alienated from God, and that those who are called by God and respond to his grace will have eternal life. Those who persist in rebellion will be lost eternally.

6) Christians believe that spirit beings inhabit the universe, some good and some evil, but worship is due to God alone.

Page 214: Are all religions equal hindutva

Hindutva 221

Hindu – Christian views counter viewsChristianity:7) Christians believe that God has given us a clear revelation of

Himself in Jesus and the sacred Scriptures. He has empowered by his Spirit prophets, apostles, evangelists, and pastors who are teachers charged to guide us into faith and holiness in accordance with his Word.

8) Christians believe that life is to be highly esteemed but that it must be subordinated in the service of Biblical love and justice.

9) Christians believe that Jesus is God incarnate and, therefore, the only sure path to salvation. Many religions may offer ethical and spiritual insights, but only Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Hindu – Christian SimilaritiesFile: ConversionAnActofViolenceEmailThe priceless affirmation in the Hindu scripture which says “ekam sat viprah bahudi vadanti” (one truth, but discerned differently by the wise) is somewhat similar to one of Jesus' sayings, “in my Father's house, there are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare one for you.”

Another of Jesus' sayings which affirms that: “I and my Father are one” is similar to the Hindu Mahavakya, “Aham Brahmasmi” (I am Brahman).

The “born again” attribute necessary for a Christian's salvation as required by Jesus is no different from the concept of “dwija” or twice-born in Brahman (often misconstrued as Brahmin) C.Alexander USA
