LIBRARY GILD New Summer Hours
Starting July 1, 2015 and continuing until mid-August the library will be open Wednesday and Thursday
afternoons from 2:30 to 4 PM. Stop in and meet our summer intern Elisabeth Bowers who will be happy to
help you find just the right book to read. We hope that some of you pool-goers will take advantage of the
summer offering. And to entice the younger set we have some new books, two of which are “Widget” and
“Daddy Sat on a Duck.”
Widget
Horn Book Guide Spring, 2002.
When Widget, a stray dog, wanders into Mrs. Diggs's home filled with six cats, he meows,
purrs, and uses the litter box--anything to fit in. It isn't until Mrs. Diggs falls that Widget
acts like a dog again, and his barking rouses the neighbors. Appealing illustrations shown
from the animals' perspective add character to this humorous story.
Daddy Sat on a Duck
Kirkus Reviews April 1, 2015
Where are all the animals that keep making strange noises in this little girl's house? When
a loud "QUACK" is heard as Daddy sits down to dinner, both mother and daughter look
alarmed. Could that have been a duck he squashed? At least he said, "Excuse me!" And
did the little girl hear a lion's roar in her parents' bedroom? All she finds is Daddy
finishing a big yawn. She sees the silhouette of a gorilla in the shower and smells a hippo
in the bathroom. The flummoxed girl asks her father about all the strange, hidden animals, and he responds
cryptically, asking her if she's ever "sailed on a walrus's back through the sea" or "ridden a bald eagle up into
the skies." Here, readers see the girl happily riding on her father's back while he swims and getting a ride up
the staircase on her dad's shoulders. The illustrations have the look of cut-paper collage and include such
distinctive details as Daddy's tattoo and heavy metal T-shirts. The verse is less openly subversive, carrying the
fart and toilet jokes along in forced couplets. This book will work best with children old enough to understand
that it's her dad making all of these vulgar sounds (and smells); readers who share the little girl's credulity will
be as mystified as she is. This silly but original story demonstrates that imagination can be both troubling and
exhilarating.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Gild Hall Renovations Fundraising Update
Our campaign is going well but we still need MORE DONATIONS to reach our goal of $160,000. As I
reported last month, our renovations cost estimate was $235,000 and rising due to damage found under the
floors. My latest estimate is $250,000 due to termite damage to many floor joists as well as asbestos that
required remediation. We have raised $145,000 so far and we still hope to reach our $160,000 goal. We are
consolidating our past 3 mortgages with Arden Building & Loan and borrowing an additional $85,000 for a
total of $165,000 so we can complete the project. We hope to keep raising funds so we can pay down our
mortgage as early as we can over the next 5 to 10 years.
Here are the donors (April 9 – June 14) who are helping make our needed
renovations a reality:
Anonymous, Walter & Jennifer Borders, Jenny Brown, Michael Buckley, June
Burleigh, Kathleen Conn, Samuel Dorfman, Bob & Marilyn Forney, Jane
Frelick, Virginia Gotides, Aaron & Sally Hamburger, Elaine Hickey, Ross
Hippely, Ian Howie, Dan & Julia McNeil, Mary & James Moser, Denise
Nordheimer, David Reese, Rick Shea, Harry & Betty Themal, John &
Maryanne Trexler, Judith Tucker, Reed & Elaine Williams, Ken Wilson, Bob
Witt, Poetry Gild, Village of Arden.
Recognitions:
In memory of Lou Bean
In memory of Waldo Bellow
In memory of Stanley Dove
In memory of Helen Winslow
In honor of Edmond Bischoff
In honor of Heidi, Christy & Julie Williams
Thanks to all our donors who are making our Renovations possible!
Renovations Construction Update
In Lower Hall, the old floor has been removed and the new joists and concrete wall have been built. The vapor
barrier is installed. After County Inspection, the underlayment boards will be installed followed by installation
of the white oak hardwood floor. Four coats of polyurethane sealer will be applied. A new ramp will be built
to the kitchen level with required railings. The kitchen and pantry have been gutted and plumbing has been
installed. The new sewer line in the Pool area was completed before the pool opened. The new wall frames are
up and electrical work is underway. The new range hood and fire suppression system work will begin soon.
The project is on schedule with completion planned before the Arden Fair.

Drummer’s Circle
The Arden Drummer’s Circle, sponsored by the Concert Gild, meets every third Sunday of each month
at 1 PM (generally running about 2 hours or so). Beginners and professionals alike are invited to join
with us. We often play some common rhythms and then we improvise. Bring a drum or two, and/or
percussion instruments. In fair weather, we meet outdoors of the Gild Hall, but in cold or rainy
weather we move into the Lower Gild Hall. We also sometimes have one or two evening events during
the year that often take the place of the monthly event.
To join the e-mail list, send an e-mail to Allan Kleban, [email protected]. People on this list will
be notified by e-mail if times or dates change, or if another performance in the Upper Gild Hall
prevents us from playing. Also see our Facebook site, Arden Drum Circle, for more information.
The Scholars Gild will be on sabbatical July and August. Through the rest of the year, our
discussions are held starting at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of the month in the Bratten
Room, Lower Gild Hall.
If you would like to receive e-mail notifications and reminders of future discussion,
contact the Scholars Gild via [email protected]. Title your e-mail “Scholars
Gild Request” and include your name, comments, and request in the body of the e-mail.
We look forward to a new season of interesting and informative discussions. Please join us in September.

half of the show will consist of Floyd's 1975 release ‘Wish You Were Here,’
which includes favorites "Have A Cigar" and the album's title track. The
second half will be the 1977 pre-Wall turning-point album 'Animals,' which
includes "Sheep" as well as the 17-minute epic "Dogs." The show will
conclude with an encore set of Floyd favorites. IN THE LIGHT is Joe Trainor

Alvin Youngblood Hart Band and Damon Fowler Band
Saturday, November 7, 201, 8 PM
Tickets $23 or Members $18 - On Sale Now!
Alvin Youngblood Hart, described as the “cosmic love child of Howlin’ Wolf
and Link Wray,” is a master of the blues and beyond. He is a Grammy Award
winner, a WC Handy Blues Winner, and a two-time Living Blues award winner.
He has even won the Downbeat Critics' Award for Best Blues album. He
performs so much more than traditional blues, however, and with his scorching
trio, 'Muscle Theory,' he'll take you on a transformative musical journey that
you can dance to.
Whether with his own band, or as a member of Southern Hospitality, Damon
Fowler is a swamp blues-rock master. The contrast between his laid-back vocals
and his intensity on guitar has made him one of the most in-demand performers
on the blues circuit. Armed with an outstanding new album produced by Tab
Benoit, Damon brings his party-ready band to Arden. Dancing is suggested.
We'll provide the dance floor.

ARDENSINGERS GILD
Fall 2015 – Panto of the Opera
Auditions have been held and the major leads have been cast for our fall show, “ The Panto of the Opera,” by
Stuart Ardern. However, we would welcome new and returning chorus members. This British comedy is
definitely NOT a silent pantomime! The story of “The Panto of the Opera” revolves around Madame Zola, the
new owner of the Paris Opera house, who discovers that her premises are threatened with closure by a
villainous English Lord, that she is under perpetual scrutiny from a Health and Safety inspector, and that the
Opera House is haunted by the mysterious Phantom, who seems to be giving singing lessons to Christine, a
newcomer. Anyone wishing to sign up for the chorus should e-mail us at [email protected], or phone
John Trexler at (484) 319-2350.
Rehearsals will be held Tuesday evenings from 7:30-10:00 and Sunday afternoons from 2:00-4:30, starting
with our kick-off on Sunday, September 13 at 1:00 PM. Performances will be November 14, 20 & 21, 2015 at
8:00 pm and November 15 & 21 at 2:00 PM. Stage direction by Ken Mammarella and music direction by
Helene Furlong.
Singing at the Blue Rocks
The Ardensingers will be singing the “Star Spangled Banner” at the Wilmington Blue Rocks’ baseball game
on Friday, July 17 at 7 PM. All past, current, and prospective Ardensinger members are welcome to join us.
We will be rehearsing on Tuesday, July 7 and Tuesday, July 14 and ask that all performers attend at least one
rehearsal. To indicate interest in participating, please contact John Trexler by e-mail at
[email protected] or phone at 484-319-2350 as soon as possible to reserve your ticket(s).
Ardensingers Annual General Meeting
Our Ardensingers Annual General Meeting, usually held in June, is being moved to coincide with the kickoff
of our fall show on Sunday, September 13. We will start with lunch at 1:00 PM, begin the meeting at 1:30, and
then plan to start our rehearsal by 2:30. All past, current, and future members are encouraged to join to hear a
recap of the past year, vote on new Board members and proposed changes to the by-laws, and discuss plans for
the future. We hope to see you there!
Volunteers Needed for the Arden Fair
The Ardensingers will again be hosting the Beer & Wine Booth at the annual Arden Fair on September 5.
Volunteers are needed to work in 2-hour shifts from 10 AM to 6 PM. We welcome current, past, or
prospective Ardensinger members. If you would like to sign up for a shift, please contact John Trexler at
[email protected] or by phone at 484-319-2350. We always have a good time in the Beer & Wine
