ARCTIC MONKEYS - I bet that you look good on the dance floor. A tracking shot is used to introduce other band members. The shot follows the main singer to the other singers this shows who has leader ship of the band. This establishing shot automatically shows the audience the video is going to be a live performance video. Like Andrew Goodwin’s theory .. ‘Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics.’ Example; A stage performance for a rock video. The low angle long shot shows majority of the band and is different to what we expect... (A long shot centred with the singer in the middle.) This makes more of n audience P.O.V shot rather than a formal staged performance for the camera. The informal style also later on represents the style of the band. The second shot is a medium close up of the main singer’s face. The casual facial expression shows his casual informal style/ motif. Andrew Goodwin states: ‘The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist. The artist may develop motifs which recur across their work’ (A Visual Style). The shot below of the band not facing the audience and playing close together shows how close the relationship with the band members are. The lighting is pink and yellow and adds to the effect of a warmly stage performance. Title shot also shows band members in the background but with equipment in the way of them this suits their informal style as well as distracting the image away so the audience can concentrate on the title. Again to show more leadership the main singer of the band is shot from a long shot behind the shoulders of another guitarists. The body language suggests they are working together.

The Camera zooms out from the motivated shot to view the drummers identity.

(Introducing shots)These close ups acts as introducing shots, introducing the identity of the singer to the audience. This relates to Andrew Goodwin’s theory: ‘the demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist. The artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.’ (A visual style.)

A second theory also relates to these shots:‘there is a relation between visuals and lyrics’ is proven in this shot as the singer is talking about eye as well as moving his focus.“stop making the eyes at me and I’ll stop making the eyes at you”Breaking the 4tth wall the singer makes eye contact with the camera which relates to the songs lyrics as well as draws the audience in and shows off his identity.

This close up of the main band member playing the guitar shows off his skill to his fans as well as being a convention of the rock genre.

This side shot shows the three guitarists and who is of main importance. The lead singer, as he is at the frontin the middle..

The side shot is taken from the front of the stage but acts as a motivated shot as the Singer then turns fully to look at the drummer.

Page 3: Arctic monkeys

Backing vocals zooms into drummer as he sings then winks at the camera. Again the eye contact with camera draws in the audience. The camera zooms into the drummer as he sings the backing vocals to show his significance to the song.

Different views of the main singer and moving camera in background. Cuts in time with song and all movement is smooth adding to the flow. Lighting used to show staged performance related more to female audience.

Forward low angle tracking and elevating shot to medium close up of singer and drummer eye level.Shaky cam to show a rock and roll style performance… smooth flow with cut to a high angle shot side crab moving shaky shot .These shots all ensure a smooth transition in the performance. The lighting in the bottom shot of green and yellow is artificial adding to the performance staged effect.

Lighting in this shot shows the yellow and pink lights not only adding to the staged performance motif but creating a dynamic sense of style

(Recurring close up) Supporting the theory of Andrew Goodwin: ’the demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist. The artist may develop motifs which recur across their work.’ (A visual style.)This is a contrast to show band members, guitarist and drummer in the background. A medium shot zooms out and tracks side ways to slowly one by one add band members in to the shot in time with the music.

Tracking sideways shot turns and follows lead singer as he walks forward. This creates a smooth flow in the music video as the shot is followed by a medium close up again of the singer and the drummer again in the background. Singer is positioned on the left of the screen so the drummer can fit in on the right in the back ground. This is also a two shot which has recurred many times. This is done so there is always something catching your eye in the performance video and constantly reminding the audience of how the band are work together for a performance.

Cuts straight to medium shot of other guitarist which hasn’t been featured much in the video until now. Stance and attitude is relaxed representing the style of the band. This shot also helps the audience with identifying the band members.

Focus changes from Close up and blurry background of drummer to opposite this juxtapose emphasises the backing singing as the drummer sings his part, Before going back to normal. This editing is useful for helping the audience identify who sings the backing vocals and gives the audience a direction on who they are watching on the screen as the blurred part of the screen can not be seen properly diverting our attention.

~Low angle shot of singer again concentrates on singer. Low angle shot makes him look superior as he is higher up and the pink lighting attracts the female audience as well as enhancing the live performance warmth feeling. This shot along with majority of shots is not a still shot it moves side ways and jilts a little to flow again in correlation with the flow of the song.

Starting from a over the shoulder shot focusing on the main singer the camera does a sideways semi-circle style track shot which flows with the increase of intensity in the song.

Recurring medium close up shot again is followed by a zoom into guitar playing. This is then followed by a close up of the singers face which again match the intensity progressing in the song. Close up shows the identity of the band is now known so the full face of the singer does not have to be fully visible . From his facial expression audience can relate to him and feel

his emotions.

Different shots are shown of the band working together this one called a two shot shows the relationship between the singer and the guitarist work well. This shot of the drummer singing the main part chorus of the song shows the increasing intensity and flow of the song towards the end that contrast with the beginning when just the main singer sang the chorus. Again machine the flow of the song the camera zooms out to show the 2nd

guitarist singing and joining in with the song. Also the effect of blurring out the background again is used to divert the attention of the audience.

The Last of the music video shows the singer walking away from the micro phone showing the pink background lighting and a large camera and camera man doing a final side ways tracking shot. This adds to the realism of the live performance reminding the audience that the video is a live performance making them feel as if they were there too.
