Arctic Man Founder’s messageThank you to all race spectators, race

teams and sponsors for attending the 30th an-niversary Arctic Man in 2015. Mother Nature

played a huge part in the race, halting all but the women’s races. Safety will always be our priority, especially for racers but also for spectators. We have had to cancel the race only two times in a 30-year history, but here’s to a year full of snow a great con-ditions for competitors and spectators alike. Th is year’s race takes place April 7, 2016.

Th e Arctic Man is a unique event that has grown in the past 30 years to be one of the major Alaska winter events. Th e 2016 Arctic Man will have a very large purse based on all teams returning and pick-ing up 10 new teams, which will reach our 65-team cap. Th anks to a rollover from last year’s purse, as well as generous contributions from sponsors throughout the state, we now have a $204,000 cap. Consider this: Th e men’s race alone off ers a $61,000 prize for fi rst place. Th at’s a heft y payout.

Th is is the fi rst time the event has given this much money away to race teams. Th e competition is going to be intense for all classes. Th e women’s ski class for 2015 did fi nish the race and were paid their earning for their purse. Th erefore, the women’s Ski Class for 2016 will not be as big.

We want to thank all of our sponsors, Polaris Outpost and Polaris, Odom Corp., AT&T, Alaska Spine Institute, Miranda Electric, Fort Knox Mine, Motorfi st, Monster Energy Drink, Sunshine Travel, Worry Free Alaska, NC Machinery, Airport Rent-als, Radio 94.7 KZND, Delta Medical Transport, Alaska Dreams, Chugach National Forest Ava-lanche Center, AMMC, McClaren Lodge, Alaska State Troopers, White Spruce Trailers, Denali State Bank, Fairbanks Daily News-Miner and all the volunteers and spectators’ who help each year.

Th e goal of the Arctic Man volunteers and of-fi cials is to work very hard to make sure that safety and common sense are a priority. We will continue to improve this every year and any comments will

be appreciated that can help make the event better for you and your families. We also especially want to thank the Alaska State Troopers for their support and help at the event, and Allen from McClaren Lodge for all his help grooming every night.

May the 2016 Arctic Man Ski and Sno-Go Classic be the best ever.

Gone too soon: A race in Logan’s memory

As a lifelong resident of Fairbanks, Logan Ricketts was a relentless advo-cate for skiing and ski racing in interior

Alaska. He touched many lives and hearts in our community as a competitor, coach, race organizer, fishing guide, entrepreneur and, of course, a respected member of the com-munity. Many may say that no one in interior Alaska has ever had so much passion for the sport of downhill skiing as him.

Logan grew up skiing and racing at Cleary Summit and later Skiland ski areas. After racing in college, for Southern Oregon State University, his competitive skiing career culminated in a strong showing at the 1991 Arctic Man. Equipped with a charming personality, Logan’s footprints in the world of snowsports can be traced to places way be-yond Alaska. Always willing to share his experiences and stories of a life dedicated to his passions he was able to influence many young skiers in interior Alaska, and he certainly moved many around him as a great friend.

During his fight with a disease that offered no mercy, he re-mained an inspiration with his positive view on life. Logan will certainly be missed by many; however we also know that he would never want anybody to waste a turn for sorrow.

Getting face shots or “hucking big air” (his own words) with an ear-to-ear grin on his face is the Logan that will always be remem-bered.

— Jim Dodson, president and CEO, Fairbanks Economic Development Corp.

Avalanche rescue workshops planned for Arctic ManThe Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center,

in conjunction with the Alaska Avalanche Information Center, returns to Arctic Man this year to offer two free avalanche rescue workshops. The workshops are open to anyone who wants to educate themselves on how to safely navigate in the backcountry.

The workshops are set for 12:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April, 6 and again Friday, April 8. Meet at the Avalanche Outpost,

at the CNFAIC Trailer near the Beer Tent. Bring your beacon (you do have a beacon, don’t you?), shovel, probe and riding partners. The program will teach you how to affect a safe and efficient companion avalanche rescue using your own gear. Demos will be available if you don’t have your own gear. There will be airbag packs to try on and demo as well.

BY MELISSA DeVAUGHN

When this year’s Arctic Man Ski and Sno-Go Classic gets underway, there will be at least

one racer who has been part of the ac-tion for the last 25 years at the starting line once again for race number 26.

Anchorage’s Eric Heil, and his driving partner Len Story, have been part of this crazy, talent-rich race since before it became known the world over. In fact, Heil and Story are among the winningest racers of Arctic Man, sharing five-time cham-pion status alongside professional skier Marco Sullivan and his driving partner Tyler Aklestad.

“We never left the game,” said Heil from his home in Anchorage, where he has managed to stay competitive among the professional skiers who dominate Arctic Man today. While the pros are out training 24-7, Heil is in Anchorage, working, raising his family and skiing like a fiend whenever he can fit in the training time.

“We started in 1990 and it’s still a very invigorating event for us,” said Heil. “Now that it attracts bigger names, we are more determined than ever to stay involved.”

What started as a $100 bet between friends in a bar back in 1985 has become one of the biggest snowmachining and skiing events in Alaska. Race director and founder Howard Thies said he is excited about this year’s competition and confi-dent that the race will happen – last year, only the women’s ski division got to make their runs before the race was called off due to poor weather and safety concerns. As a result, the leftover purse from last year’s unraced events is still up for grabs.

“This year is 31 years of Arctic Man, and we have a lot of names coming to race,” Thies said. “We have $204,000 in prize money and the men’s ski division top prize is $61,000. It’s going to be an exciting race.”

Every year, Arctic Man becomes a thriving metropolis in the Hoodoos, with a giant swath of cleared snow turned into a makeshift parking lot. It’s a city built on camaraderie between snowmachiner, and skier and snowboarder – a partnership built on trust from years of racing together and depending upon each other for safety.

Arctic Man artistry: Where trust and loyalty matter

IF YOU GOFOLLOWING THE RACE

If getting to Arctic Man just isn’t an option – maybe the budget is limited or you can’t get the time off of work – don’t worry. There are many ways in which you can follow the race from the comfort of home. Radio station KZND-FM 94.7 will be announcing times and places to the crowd on site, and hopefully communications will allow it to extend beyond just the venue.

There will also be Facebook updates in the morning and evening – search the Arctic Man page at www.facebook.com.

GETTING THERE

The spectacular Hoodoo Mountains are the venue for this annual event, which attracts nearly 15,000 spectators each year. To get here from Anchorage, follow the Glenn Highway to its intersection with the Richardson Highway, at Glennallen. Turn left (north) on the Rich-ardson for approximately 82.5 miles. From Fairbanks follow the Richardson south. Follow the Richardson for another 62.5 miles past Delta Junction.

General GPS coordinates for the Arctic Man campground are 63°12’7.21”N, 145°30’35.30”W.

The race is comprised of teams of skilled competi-tors who test the strength of their athleticism and the horsepower of their snowmachines. Training and trust are the key elements of this dynamic duo.

“If you look at all the people that race Arctic Man, there is a loyalty between people – look at John Martin and Petr Kakes. Johhny was 75 years old and driving and Petr was committed to him because he trusted him. That’s a very-established pattern of loy-alty. Marco Sullivan and Tyler Aklestad are another example.”

In Arctic Man, the skier or boarder begins at the summit elevation of 5,800 feet and drops 1,700 feet in less than two miles to the bottom of a narrow canyon where they meet up with their snowmachine partner. The snowmachiner meets the skier, on the fly, with a tow rope pulling the skier a little over two miles uphill at top speeds of nearly 90 mph, they then separate, the skier goes over the side of the second mountain and drops another 1,200 feet to the finish line.

It’s an adrenaline rush – for spectators, but espe-cially for racers.

“We’re battle worn, I’ll tell you that much,” Heil said of he and Story’s long history with the race. “We’ve both been broken, both been repaired and we are both determined and defiant against our age. People keep saying, ‘When are you going to quit,’ and if anything it makes us want to go harder.” SNOWRIDER FILE

Spectators crowd the hookup zone, which is one of the more popular areas to watch the event.

EVENTS & ENTERTAINMENTArctic Man race director Howard Th ies says to expect the

usual forms of entertainment, Alaska Motor Mushers Club races, drags, live music, food, beer tent – all the things that make Arctic Man just that much more fun. (And don’t forget the Guinness World Record attempt!)

BAR TENT AND SHUTTLE BUSAs a free service, Arctic Man guests can be transported from

the bar tent back to their camp on a shuttle. Th e shuttle is for anyone who has been drinking. So hop on board and tip the driver. Aft er all, he or she is putting up with a rowdy bunch.

If you plan on drinking, walk – don’t ride – to the bar. Plan to use the shuttle, and watch out for friends and family. As Th ies said, “I’m trying to make this a family event, not a drunken party.”

CELL PHONE COVERAGEArctic Man thanks AT&T for the cell phone service they’ve

provided for the past few years. 4G service will again be avail-able.

OUTHOUSESDo you consider yourself a king of Arctic Man? Th en you

deserve a proper throne. If you don’t want everyone messing up your RV toilet or if you don’t think it will function properly in the extreme cold, call (907) 452-1480 to secure your very own outhouse.

FIREWOODFires are permitted in your camp area. Arctic Man has not

secured a vendor as of yet for purchasing at the compound so be sure to check their website and plan accordingly.

Rules of the camp include no burning of pallets (nails have been a problem in the past) and no throwing glass in the fi res. And, as weird as it is to write these words – feel free to bring a couch but do NOT leave it behind, attempt to burn it or dump it in the Dumpsters.

CAMPGROUND RESERVATIONSCampground reservations start at $140 if paid early. Sites are

secured for the previous occupant each year until March 1. Aft er that, sites are given up to waiting list.

Th e Arctic Man compound is plowed and constructed annu-ally and off ers limited space for campers and RV’s. Camping groups must reserve campsites and register with Arctic Man organizers. Th e cost to do so aft er February 15 is $145. Paypal credit card payments are available online.

Campsites include plowed parking, access to medical tent, outhouses, garbage dumpster and the opportunity to be close to all the action. Previous Arctic Man campers have the fi rst op-portunity to reserve their campsite. Aft er March 1, however, all sites are up for grabs. Find the registration form online, www.arcticman.com.

Going for the GuinnessSNOWRIDER FILE

A boarder hangs on as the Arctic Man race heats up.

BY MELISSA DeVAUGHN

In February of 2015, the Whitecourt Trailblazers in Alberta, Canada, set a Guinness World Record for the largest parade of snowmachines at one time. Howard Th ies, founder of Arctic Man, came across that record

while cruising the Internet one day and scoff ed when he saw the number. Th e Trailblazers gathered 1,047 snowmachines for its World Snowmobile Invasion that year. Doing the math in his head, Th ies quickly realized that during Arctic Man, there are more routinely twice, even three times that many snowmachines in the Hoodoo Mountains during the annual races.

“I would like to get 1,500,” Th ies said of the record-breaking attempt, which is to take place at noon Saturday, April 9. “We just need 1,048, but I want to do it right. Monster Energy Drinks is helping sponsor, and we are going to have T-shirts and stickers.

“It’s not a race, I just want it to be fun.”Indeed a Guinness World Record would cap an already fantastic

event like no other in the world. Th ies estimates that for every RV or rig that shows up at Arctic Man, there are at least four snowma-chines being towed behind. And in a full parking lot that adds up to some 7,000 snowmachines.

“I have room for about 1,700 people,” he said. “But if we get more, we will make it work.”

Monster Energy Drinks has been a huge supporter of the record-breaking attempt, he added. Th ey will be giving away their drinks,

Plan is to gather a minimum of 1,500
