If you like Pike and/or Lake Trout fishing, this place is what you want. As a bonus, Artic Grayling of 2-3+ pounds is available. My son caught over 100 Northern Pike (I caught 20!!) in one day of fishing at a nearby optional fly-in. The Pike ranged from 24 inches to the largest at 42 inches. Average size was about 32 inches with 10 in the 36+ range. We saw Pike there pushing the 48 mark. We caught numerous Lakers in the 16 pound range and some other fishermen/ women landed 30+ pounders. This lodge offers superior fishing, excellent guides, great food and very good service from a friendly staff. If you listen to your guide's suggestiions, you should have a fantastic trip.

lines with 20-30 lb. test backing (the same outfit may be used for Trout and Northern) and 14-18 lb. test tapered leader/tippet. With floating lines use a fly line one size up from the rod weight—an 8-wt. rod uses a 9-wt. line. Wire leaders are essential. Big hair bugs like the Dahlberg Diver and Whitlock Mouserat; large streamers; large poppers.

Fly-Fishing Lake Trout: 7-wt. or 8-wt. fly rod; 2 spools of line to effectively cover the water column — one with fast sink tip or sinking line and the other with floating line. Lines should have 20-30 lb. test backing. With floating lines use a fly line one size up from the rod weight—an 8-wt. rod uses a 9-wt. line.

Fly-Fishing Grayling: We recommend an 8.5’ or 9’ 5-wt. or 6-wt. rod with both floating and moderate sink-tip lines, 4x-6x knot-less tapered leaders/tippet. With floating lines use a fly line one size up from the rod weight—a 5-wt. rod uses a 6-wt. line. Wet Flies/Nymphs: Various Bead Head Caddis, Wooly Worm, Hare’s Ears. Browns, blacks, tans and olives, size 10, 12, 14. Dry Flies: Elk Wing Caddis, Adams, Blue Dun, and Mosquito. Browns, blacks, tans and olives, size 10, 12, 14.

Over 40 years ago, Doug Hill pined for the vast tracts of untouched Arctic wilderness - true wilderness - a place free of roads, telephone poles, tanker trucks - even neighbors. Doug had a dream to bring the incredible fishing and remote wilderness of Canada’s Arctic within reach of anglers in the southern regions of Canada and the U.S.A.

After several exploratory bush plane flights, with young sons Rob and Mike diligently casting off the floats to test the waters, Doug settled on Kasba Lake - a huge, fish-filled jewel, with tundra-covered islands and forested shores in Canada’s fabled Northwest Territories. And it was here, under the midnight sun and northern lights, that Doug found a peace and solitude unlike any place he had ever been. One hundred fifty miles north of the nearest road, Kasba Lake promised future guests not only great fishing but a true wilderness experience.

In 1975, the first fishermen landed at a “rustic” Kasba Lake Lodge and the fishing was legendary. Fishermen started coming from far and wide to experience its extraordinary fishing and unique arctic beauty. To protect the fishery Doug took the revolutionary step of instituting a ‘Catch and Release’ policy - the first of its kind in Canada.

Over the years the little lodge grew, adding modern amenities and state-of-the-art equipment. Kasba developed a unique style all its own. Maybe it was Kasba’s remoteness, or the generations of Hill family traditions which cultivated the famous ‘Kasba Style’, either way, all of us at Kasba Lake Lodge sincerely hope you can relax and enjoy the unique spirit and beauty of Kasba Lake.
