mathematical system, this desi!n o" pavilion per"orms di""erent nuance# he shape is "ormed bythe simple pieces that are put to!ether# he team conducted di!ital survey and uses the

relationships mathematical system to put the pieces to!ether# %n this process the desi!ners !et the

!roup o" architecture students "rom the University o" ew )outh $ales constructed a

temporary pavilion out o" recycled cardboard tubes in "ront o" the )ydney Customs 3ouse# he pavilion was one o" several temporary structures constructed by architecture student !roups "rom

ustralian universities as part o" the C34 )tudent /esi!n Competition durin! the )ydney

rchitecture Festival# U)$s 6uilt nvironment team was !iven 2,000 tubes "rom a company

that manu"acturers carpet# he !oal "or the competition was to ma&e use o" recycled materialsand educate "estival visitors on sustainability#

U)$s desi!ned the pre"abricated and preassembled the temporary pavilion at the ramsheds

on U)$s 7andwic& campus# hey used plywood sheets and cut holes in the wood to createstructural "orms, which the cardboard tubes would slide into# he entire pavilion sits on a small

"oundation o" wood slats that curve in hal" circles to create the pavilion# "ter preassemblin! the

pavilion in the university buildin!s, the students too& apart the structure and rebuilt it in one dayon the "orecourt o" the Customs 3ouse in )ydney#

ll o" the teams "or the C34 competition wor&ed with recycled and reused materials, li&e

compressed aluminum cans, !iant "oldin! "abric pleats and a !rid o" lar!e movin! pu88le bloc&s#he e'hibition lasted "rom +ctober 20th to the 91st and was :uried by a panel o" )ydney

architecture pro"essionals# "ter the competition, the U)$ 6uilt nvironment students hoped

to send the cardboard tubes bac& to the manu"acturer "or reuse or at minimum, the tubes would

/esi!ned by architects ?aillo @ %ri!aray, the A) Loun!e is a pavilion that located in avarra,)pain which !ets its distinctive loo& "rom the airy "acade o" !reen reeds surroundin! it# $ith the

"un&y structure, it serves as a pop up event space that allows !uests to "eel li&e they are dinin!

and dancin! within a bamboo "orest#+n the inside, the space is airy and "illed with dayli!ht streamin! "rom a strate!ically placed

s&yli!ht# he cement "loor and thin, metal poles that hold up the roo" !ive the interior a

monochromatic, industrial loo& that is complemented by the poppy !reen o" the reeds outside# %n

the center o" the room, a chun& o" the "loor has been covered with what appears to be a carpet o"

crushed !reen wine bottles#

%ts called, sits ad:acent to the Us new temporary eneral ssembly buildin!, and serves as a pop-up entrance pavilion and security screen "or the !eneral assembly dele!ates# he *orte

CochBres main "unction is to serve as an entrance pavilion while several historic U buildin!s

are bein! renovated#FL desi!ned the interim canopy with sustainability in mind and minimi8ed the amount o"

materials used to build it, ma&in! "or a li!htwei!ht structure that can be relocated and reusedtime and a!ain on di""erent parts o" the campus# ested within the surroundin! landscape, thecanopys helical arches undulate and twist, creatin! an artistic entrance to !reet international

dele!ates#

%n order to reduce the pavilions environmental impact, FL e'plored li!htness as a visual,

physical and sustainable approach, usin! a minimum o" materials# he structure uses two "abricsa e"lon coated !lass "abric and a silicone coated !lass "abric "or !reater translucency in the

arches# %n order to provide ventilation to disperse "umes "rom idlin! cars unloadin! dele!ates, the

pavilion also had open "acades and linear vents that run the entire len!th o" the trusses, lettin!"resh air "low "reely throu!hout the enclosure#

semi spherical pavilion is made "rom 40> circular cardboard pieces connected to!ether with ties#he pro:ect was di!itally desi!ned usin! C/ so"tware, which opens up e'citin! new

possibilities "or structures made "rom biode!radable paper pulp#

he *ac&ed *avilion was unveiled as part o" the 9/ paperrt e'hibition at the )han!hai Auseumo" rts and Cra"ts durin! the 2010 )han!hai 'po# ach o" the pavilions circular components is

"ormed "rom 2J layers o" cardboard that were cut and composed into buildin! elements by acomputer controlled machine# he pro:ect was also desi!ned to be e""iciently manu"actured andshipped by nestin! individual pieces within one another, savin! on production time, material use,

and shippin! volume#

/esi!ned by studio d7C, this ni"ty !reenhouse and sun room sits atop a 1>th century row

house in the )outh )ide Flats o" /owntown *ittsbur!h# he desi!n has lost no punch as it

contrasts with the dar& "actory bric& homes o" a century a!o# Usin! passive heatin! the pro:ectalso helps warm the lower "lats K li&e the ori!inal desi!n, but with new e""icient equipment that

also pumps "resh air into the buildin!# enants are !iven much-needed space to !arden and can

han! out on the sun dec& while ta&in! in the city views and sun rays#he rchitects li&e the desi!n to those 7ussian Aatryosh&a dolls that nestle into each other, an

inner structural "rame is s&inned by an outer "rame o" !la8in! and stainless steel, but perhaps a

more apt description may be o" toppled dominos "acin! the sun# he tilted roo" is a "rame "orthree lar!e south-"acin! windows which collect a remar&able amount o" usable sunli!ht#

biophilic !arden with hydroponic and soil plantin! systems o""ers produce and "lowers "or the

day, the bri!ht structure provides shade, while at the same time soa&in! in the suns rays# tni!ht, the pavilion is illuminated usin! the ener!y its accumulated all day, creatin! a ma!ical

$hile the e'ample shown here is made up o" basic colors, the pavilion can be "itted with anycombo o" hues that suits your event best# he panels are made o" transparent composite material

held to!ether by modular structures that are plastered with "le'ible solar panels on the top and

can be switched out easily# L/ li!hts within the ceilin! o" the structure set the party mood#
