In order for a structure to perform as it was
designed to, it must be able to withstand all
the forces that it is subjected to when loaded.
In order to understand how a structure will
behave when loaded it is important to
investigate the forces acting on the external
surface of the structure, and those actinginternally. This section will deal with the
forces found in structures and the effect they
have on the structure. Before you can understand how a structure
will behave when loaded you must first have a
knowledge of the different types of forces thatma be resent in a structure.

a free body to undergo achange in speed, a change
in direction, or a change in
shape.

Forces push and forces pull,
They cause a change of speed.
To speed things up or slow them downA force is what you need.
Forces twist and forces turn.
They move things round and round. The force that's due to Gravity
Pulls things to the ground

COMPRESSION / COMPRESS
will cause a member of structure
to be squashed
forces push material particlesagainst each other
the member that is in
compression is called a struta force is applied inward against
the face of a structural element

SHEAR FORCE
will cause a member to slide/tilt to a
side
when a force is applied in parallel to
the face of a structural element at anangle that is perpendicular to either
compression or tension forces

end of an object is twisted in one
direction and the other end is heldmotionless or twisted in the
opposite direction
