Sefar. Technical fabric for sophisticated architecture applicationsFor over 180 years, Sefar has stood for exceptional competence in the development and manufacture of technical fabrics. Today these are used in a wide range of modern technologies such as the pharmaceutical industry, automobile construction, and telecommunications. The special qualities of technical fabrics by Sefar have been recognized in sophisticated architectural concepts for over 10 years. The «fabric&light» segment is seen as the logical continuation of this business development.

The fabric&light module CIELUMA is a joint venture with Zumtobel, in which light-technical innovations and the material properties of technical fabrics contribute multiple benefits simultaneously. This new light solution is presented in an intentionally reduced form language. With its pure and even construction, without visible design features, the system is ideal as a lighting element which gives the architect and lighting planner the freedom to make their own stylistic marks.

Specially designed for interior applications, SEFAR® Architecture IA (IA = Interior Acoustics) demonstrates excellent light trans-mission and sound absorption values owing to its open-pore textile structure. And of course it is water repellant, permanently UV resistant, colour and odor neutral, while at the same time meeting the most demanding fire safety regulations.

Irrespective of whether CIELUMA is installed as a single ele-ment or interconnected in larger spaces, the light system blends inconspicuously into flat surfaces thanks to its sleek design. At the same time it lends optimum advanced light technology and functionality to the respective architectonic concept of the spatial characteristics.

The minimalistic construction guarantees an homogenous light surface without any shadow formation, while the light-technical fabric ensures optimal light transmission. The range of possible additional variants, such as the inclusion of lighting tracks, spot-lights, etc., is an integral part of the intelligence of the system.

Fundamental to the assembly stage – whether the installation is a single element or flat application – is the CIELUMA «plug and play» system – reassuringly simple and time-saving.

Functional constructionSefar utilizes the properties of the two fabric layers for the best possible lighting quality. For this purpose, the first layer of fabric acts as a diffuser below the inbuilt LED light sources and convertors. The light emitted by the LED elements is gathered and radiated onto the second, visible layer of fabric tensioned below it. The result is a completely homogenous, glare-free light surface.

Acoustic added-valueOptimal lighting and acoustically effective materials make a mea-surable difference to personal comfort and well-being in spaces dominated by hard construction materials such as concrete, glass, and metal. The positive effect on spatial acoustics through the application of two layers of SEFAR® Architecture IA-Fabric (IA = Interior Acoustics) is achieved because the double membrane acts like an air cushion, noticeably reducing direct reverberations, reflections and echoes. Benefits, which could otherwise only be achieved by the addition of echo- reducing structures.
