As long as I can remember I have been interested in drawing and building. Although I was never a bright light concerning maths and physics, I still believed in becoming an architect. As a teen-ager reality kicked in. Even if I had any talent in designing at the time, I still had none in science. After focussing on economics for years and spending time on a wrong choice of bachelor study, I decided to attend math and physic courses and sit for examina-tion on both subjects. I passed with flying colours.

A few months later I was accepted at the bachelor Building Engi-neering at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, with archi-tecture as specialization. My goal is to become a licensed archi-tect and in time own an architectural firm focussed on high-rise buildings. I try to distinguish myself in this journey by my drive and refusing to fail on many occasions.

PAVILION OF ARTS 02Year: 2012 Location: Burchtstraat, Groningen, NetherlandsProject: Art exhibition centre The Burchstreet is a small ally near the city centre of Gron-ingen. I was assigned to design a modern art centre some-where in the street. My primary goal was designing an art centre that would stand out of the crowd. My secondary goal was using the new art centre to turn this little backstreet into a more appealing location.

When you look at the surrounding buildings in the street, one would no-tice that they are all very traditional. By using a lot of glass and diagonal lines, the building would make a huge con-trast with the traditional brick buildings with a much lower glass-percentage. Although the building is not tall, I want-ed it to have a plinth. The plinth made the first floor fit in and made the top floors stand out even more. The Burchstraat Art centre was my first ever Architecture project. The project was primarily assigned to find out how much architectural and designing ex-perience us, first year architecture stu-dents, had.

This family home in the woods creates a unity between the lake and its surrounding forest. It offers the pleasure and the view of living near a waterside and the joy and peace of living in the forest. It has the space and facilities of a luxury villa, but the character of a log house.

The design of the house is based on the location itself. When you approach the house from the forest, one would see a homely home that would blend in its natural envi-ronment. I have tried to do this, by using a great amount of natural materials on this side of the house and keeping the glass-percentage low. The bedrooms are placed at the more cool north side of the house. The orientation of the kitchen and living room is mainly on the lake. I used a lot of glass in the living room. By doing this, the tenant would have great views across the water, giving him/her the feeling of freedom. Also, the room itself would be very light. Because the living room is on the southern side of the house, the heating can mainly rely on the sun during the day. In the design of the house i used diagonal lines to give it its shape. They are aligned to the shore. By doing this, the lines would portray a separation between the forest and lake.

VILLAGE BOTERDIEP 04Year: 2013 Location: Boterdiep, Groningen, NetherlandsProject: Student studio’s & appartments

The Boterdiep is a street in Groningen with a great variety of shops, entertainment and housings. It pilfers unity in the street. Village Boterdiep brings back unity and consistency. It is a village within the city of Groningen. A place within the city where people can live, but also come to relax and enjoy. The Village brings back nature and comfort. It changes not only its own location, but also a great part of the Boterdiep.

The building complex consists of apartments and studio’s , designed for students and starters. The complex distin-guishes itself with a giant, mostly shared, roof garden. To-gehter with the street, the garden creates an extra semi – public area. The roof garden gives the residents of the complex a place to relax and socialize. Also, the nature on the roof completely changes the look and feel of this part of the Boterdiep. The design of the roof garden is strongly determined by the routing within the complex. Many stu-dio’s have their entrance on the second or third floor. By making the garden a part of the routing, every part of the garden is functional. A couple of bridges connect the dif-ferent parts of the garden with each other. When walking across a bridge, one can fully enjoy the heights, nature and essence of the village. Because the location is completely surrounded by build-ings (approximately 9 meters in height), I chose to design two lines of buildings and position them around a green courtyard. By doing this, the buildings would be divided by a great space filled with light. To collect even more light inside the buildings, the southern block of buildings is twisted in towards the courtyard and the midday sun. This also gives the buildings a pleasant view of the courtyard.The courtyard itself creates a new public area / park. In combination with the plan for renewing the central reser-vation of the Boterdiep, by turning these parts into a small park, a new public space will arise in the middle of the street.

The design of the facade of the buildings is very traditional. Because I wanted to create unity in the street, I took fea-tures from the surrounding traditional buildings, renewed them and used them in the design. I also kept the floor heights the same as that from the surrounding buildings.

This building is strongly influenced by nature. The concept; a eco-friendly building that brings new life into a polluted, exhausted environment. The building resembles a cracked rock. The crack is resembled by the indoor gardens, which carry “life” through the building.

My approach was different in the design of this Health Center. The design is fundamentally based on ZED and strongly influ-enced by nature. Instead of sketching my first idea’s, this time I had to learn about ZED first. ZED stands for Zero Energy Design. To qualify a building as ZED, it has to produce as much energy as it consumes. Boundary conditions in this assignment were that the produced energy must be “clean” and the location of the building a “wasteland”. One task was to find that location yourself. I chose a polluted former factory ground.

The Zero Energy Design of the Health Center is primarily based on heating and energy from the sun in combination with natu-ral ventilation. Because the location is in a climate with strong changes between summer and winter, the ZED has two vari-ants. Both involve sunlight and natural ventilation. Because we have less sunlight in winter, the difference is that the building also relies on electrical floor heating during this season.

The shape and form of the building are strongly determined by its dependence on the sun. Solar panels on the roof and top glassing collect energy from sunlight. This energy will be con-verted into electricity and the heat will be used for warm water. The sun will also be used to heat the indoor gardens and living spaces by radiation. By positioning these spaces on the south and southwest side, the heat generation will be optimal. Thanks to the sun a greenhouse-effect will take place inside the indoor gardens. This effect plays a huge part in the natural ventilation system of the building.

Ventilation in the building is both mechanic and natural. On dif-ferent places around the building, air vents suck in fresh air and blow them through the so called “earth pipes”. These pipes lead the fresh air into the ground. The fresh air will now be heat-ed by conduction from the stable temperature of the earth. From the earth pipes the fresh air will then be blown into the indoor gardens. In here the fresh air will be heated even more, until it circulates up and flows into the living spaces. Polluted air will later be mechanically carried away, through a HRS unit, back into the ground.

GYAS ROWING CENTER 06Year: 2014 Location: Hoornsediep, NetherlandsProject: Student sportscenter The new Gyas Rowing Center is specifically designed for its location. Gyas has been part of the location for decades, but the original building never worked well in its environment. This new building is the result of a study of urban develop-ment in the area, in combination with a study of the most efficient way to stall and departure rowing boats. The new Gyas Rowing Center stands as a beacon for the studentcity Groningen.

The Hoornsediep canal is a busy part of an important waterway. It’s part of a route that connects the north of Holland to the rest of the country. Strict measurements concerning the width of the waterway are applied to this part of the canal. The design of the building is strongly influenced by these measurements. Because the waterway constantly has to have a certain width, the rowboats can only be laid in the water and departure at certain angles. Departing in a wrong way would create a blockade for passing traffic. By study I tried to op-timize the angle of departing rowboats and routing in the warehouse. After finding the ideal angle of departure, I designed the plan of the warehouse based on the amount of degrees.

For the design of the warehouse I turned to traditional wooden boat houses. These houses are build “around” the water, instead of next to the water. They simply are an artificial cove. I chose to put this feature in my design. I want the water to flow inside the building and make the separation of building and water start to fade. The inlet offers the op-portunity to depart in the ideal angle from inside the building itself. This prevents boats having to twist and turn in the waterway and possibly block traffic. Also, the huge inlet now defines this side of the building. Two different paths lead through the building; one for people and one for boats (boats being carried). I optimized the path for boats in a way that they can be carried to the inlet and departure without having to make a turn.

The building consists of three different areas; Rowing, Gym & Cafete-ria. The ground floor completely consists of the rowing-area. The other areas are on the first floor. The cafeteria is part of the student way of living and will mainly be used as a bar and clubhouse. Within the three areas are the locker rooms. Because they are needed for every activi-ty in the different areas, they lie in the middle and are the heart of the building. The locker rooms connect the areas.

The shape and form of the building is derived of its efficiency. This huge inlet further defines the shape of the building. The inlet is both functional and aesthetic. It resembles the way the building works. The way the rest of the building is designed around the inlet makes the building stand out. I used a lot of glass on in the facades near the water. Primarily to offer great views across the water, but also to give this side of the building a more open character towards the water. The glass-covered slope that leads the path along the water is mainly re-sponsible for this. I tried to create a contrast between this “open” side and the more “closed” side of the building near the shore, by the use of materials. I used a great amount of different kinds of wood in the design. Wood is in my opinion an essential part of a boathouse and matches naturally to water.

ART & STUDIES 07Year: 2012Location: -Project: Mondrian Morphology

This abstract model is not an innovative design. It is more a reflection of Mondrian’s work. A new way of displaying it. With this model I added a dimension to the artists’ best known work. I tried to make his work more profound and dynamic. His use of lines and forms is now more than just visible. This model is a way to make his paintings tangible.

This project is based on the neo-plasistic paintings made by well known artist Piet Mondrian. During this project I tried to work in the same way as the artist did. Like Mondrian I started off with a simple sketch of the visible reality. I chose to sketch a simple sunrise at sea in only primary co-lours. After that, I fragmentized the sketch in same way Mondrian did it in his early paintings. Mondrian’s ideology was that the object or scene itself was more import-ant than the colours that defined it. I de-cided to deviate from this point of view. In my opinion replacing the colours that are audible in the reality of a sunrise by prima-ry colours, would later give the abstract model a more intense feel. In some of his paintings Mondrian rotated his geometric forms 45 degrees. In my design I kept the squares, rectangles and lines in a 0 or 90 degree angle. The next step was to trans-fer this fractured sketch of a sunrise into a abstract three-dimensional model.

The sun clearly stands out in the abstract model. I portrayed the sun with the only square in the mod-el. I also centered the sun amidst the red dawn, as pictured in the sketch. With the horizontal black lines I tried to resemble the horizon. The vertical lines serve as framework to the different objects and events in the picture. I tried to give the water of the sea a bit more depth in the three-dimen-sional model. I did this by using a variety of colours and rectangles, which are pushed back and for-ward to create a relief.

I started out with an empty box which stands for a room with its available space. In this box I created an abstract com-position. The composition is strongly influenced by the Dutch artistic movement “The Style” and the Russian arts move-ment the Suprematism. Like the art from these movements I focussed on using basic geometric forms, primarily rectangles and lines. Also, I tried to use a limited variety of colours. I make several composi-tions based on the guidelines of both art movements. In the end I decided that this composition proportionally had the best relation between form and space within the available space in the box.
