Through an off-the-cuff design three partly concepts of a shop should be established, in eight hours. Generally, this ishoud be a concept for the backstage area of a bag store, including a space to present the bags and represent the brand `FREITAG‘. This young, innovative Swiss brand has two major hallmarks: recycled materials and customizable design. These facts should be major affects on the design, too.

´FREITAG‘ is a brand that plays with traditional materials, giving them a new character by unexpected treat-ment. Underlining this innovativ cha-racter and variety of FREITAG bags, transformated & curved wood panels are proposed. Through them shelves and suspensions are established, accessing space to exhibit FREITAG-bags and accessoires. This partly concept could also be the starting point for the transformation of the whole shop, with this curved wood structure.

The design plays with the image of fashion products, people get through magazines. As an installati-on images of Freitag-bags from ads are hanging from the ceiling, provi-ding the visitor with an overview of the range of products. But by pulling their mashups, the actual products appear and can be discovered.

The goal of the design was to create an interior concept for the young optician Max Steilen, who wants to start his own business in Leipzig. The location of the possible sales floor is in the former art institute `Grimme & Hempel‘ from the period of promoterismin, in Schleußig, a young and family orientated district of the city.
Generally, Max Steilen just wants to sell glasses and acces-soires of the brand `Götti‘, an austrian label. Also, he wants the shop design to be dedicated to ideals and simplicity of the brand. and additionally, there should be an eye test and all necessary medical artifacts integrated.

The design of the shop is established as a circular structure, which is represented through a taping and surrounding band. Also this band devides the floor in different zones of function and represents their status.
Following the mantra of the brand `Götti‘ the shop is generally realised in a minimalistic way, but by using clever details making it modern. The choice of materials underlines the pureness and luxury, intended by the owner Max Steilen. Through the different light situations a variety of comfort zones is created, from the clinical light for the eye test to the cozy light situation in the lounge area and also setting the glasses in scene effectively.
Also, the required use of the ipads is realized through an exhibition concept with central blocks of concrete, giving unlimited access forcostumers and staff. There, reorderings and a overview over the product range can be given.The use of the macintosh system is also connec-ted to the cash box system, helping to simplify the whole accounting procedures and storage. Also the concrete blocks can be used to present spe-cial accessoires and seasonal products, but can also be put aside to insert a ramp to give wheelchair drivers access.

For many generations, the Northern Lights were one ofnature’s greatest mysteries. Why did the sky turn green andyellow and purple in various regions of the earth, at specifictimes of the year, while other places, other skies, remainedentirely unchanged?
Every year thousands of tourist travel to Rovaniemi, Finlandto see the Northern Lights. Genereally, the weather condi-tions can be so extreme that designing for a place like this can be different from doing it in any other region of the world.
Therefore, the task is to create a Northern Lights observatorylocated in one of the most extreme latitudes inhabited byMan, surrounded by lush, endless forests and nature in its purest form.This ishould be much more than just a service to the city, because there will be a Finish spa, a full astronomical obser-vatory, and all themost charming accommodations in food, beverage, and lodging.
Finland - Land of thousands of lakes
The country of forests and lakes, is perhaps best known for its unspoilt natural beauty. In the far north, the White Nights, during which the sun does not set, lasts for around 10 weeks of the summer. In winter the same area goes through nearly eight weeks when the sun never rises above the hori-zon.
Finland was a part of Sweden for seven centuries (from the 12th century until 1809) and following still around 6% of the population is Swedish-speaking. Finland just became an independent state following the Russian revolution in 1917. Since this date Finland has been a republic, developing a modern, competitive economy.

The analysis itself is mostly build on the finnish social and cultural development, from the historical scandinavian people, the “Sami” and their natural habitat to the increase of the concrete pre-fabricated houses after the second world war and also to the typical finnish summer cabin “Mökki”. Hotel rooms will be implemented as indepen-dent tree houses, including a terrace, one bathroom, a living room and a bunk bed. It is giving the image of a cozy private place of retreat, while connecting unlimited with the experience of the the Northern Lights and the
surrounding pristine nature .

The facade material, used in the main com-plex, takes up the often-used building materi-al in Finland slate. This is also degraded in the regions of Lapland and is characterized by high temperature stability.
In addition, through the use of a curtain wall, flexibility in building is guaranteed and large variability especially with curved facades will be. established. Also, amonolithic image is generated from a distance.

ENERGY has become a powerful topic in the architectural debate on sustainable building. It is taking a prominent positi-on next to reuse, CO2 emissions, reductions on waste mate-rials and other environmental impacts. Current trends in addressing these issues tend to focus on imposing approa-ches, in which reducing, minimizing, restricting and preventing seem to be the buzz-words.
This competition seeks to investigate the inherent characteris-tics of one material, concrete, in relation to ENERGY. It asks to evaluate those properties of concrete that make it a rele-vant and versatile material for ‘energy-aware’ applications. It aims to fully pursue the potential of core properties like mass, volume, surface textures, mixtures and hybrids, in acting on current needs and ambitions.

The last years the puplic forum was dominated by the theme of renewa-ble energies like no other. Although there is a general consent about the will to support sustainable technolo-gy, incisions in the private life are beeing refused. Concerning the fact that the regions of Germany have different preconditions for the use of substainable energy, big power lines will become necessary to transport generated power. But especially the system of power lines or wind turbines is rejected, regarding their visually significant impact on their surrounding.
The design captures this theme and transforms it, making further trans-port or obtaining external produced energy irrelevant. The created autarchic lighthouse has the ideal shape to gain the impinging wind.Futhermore there is a modular facade-system, which leads the wind optimal through the included vents. Here the integrated rotors take it and generate electric energy. Thereby the design obtains the themes of plasticity and reproducibi-lity of concrete with the help of reusable gum matrixes. At the same time the facade seems monolithic from distance, keeping the surroun-ding in its calm appearance.

All in all the goal of the design is to conceive a lighthouse, which could provide one person and the contained beacon with their awai-ted electric energy consumption. Generally the facade concept could also be used on other tall urban buildings like skyscrapers.

Therefore, the design includes the use of fibreglass-reinforced concrete (GFB), generating the slight weight and the thickness of the panels by 50 mm.

As the result of the experimental tests in the wind channel, the following aspects became clear:

Use of the upwind
Another interesting opportunity to generate energy is the use of upwind. Through conical deforma-tions of the whole curtain wall, hori-zontal wind turbines could be imple-mented at the highest point. The defussing wind increases its volume as it gets higher and therefore needs more space. Based on that consideration more energy can be produced through the air, which is compressed in the lower levels and emits through the turbines on top. This system could also be imple-

On the one hand, establishing a calmer surrounding is a major fact through the design, but on the other, improving the acoustic situation is also an important point. Therefore „Eco Whisperers“ are included. Instead of the typical three rotor-blades, they consist of 30 seperate ones, which are connected at their bottoms. The “Eco Whisperer“ has got a new look and with it‘s use the noise production can also be tremendously reduced. Due to the special construction of the alumium rotorblades, it is much more easy recognized by birds and bats. Besi-des, the use of the „Eco Whisperer“ promises a better efficiency of the electric energy production.
Micro wind turbines
Micro and small wind turbines genera-te renewable electricity from wind. Rotor blades are aerodynamically engineered to take optimal power and then turn a turbine to generate electri-city.
The power of a wind turbine increases exponentially in a relation to the speed of the wind and the diameter of the blades. This makes larger turbines with higher wind speeds more cost effecti-ve e.g. the energy payback for larger turbines in windy places is multiplied but good wind speeds at the micro level, can also generate considerable energy.

Rethinking Mallorca‘sseafront
ARCHITECTURAL STUDENT COMPETITION 2011
In this comprition, architecture can be the base point for developing and improving sustainable environments. These improved sustainable environments can create harmony between the tourists who want to visit them and the conser-vation and identity of the landscape.
Cala Millor is located on the east cost of the Mallorca Island in Spain. It is the third most visited destination on the island, having 10,000 permanent residents and over 35,000 hotel rooms.Since the 60’s Cala Millor has become one of the most visited place by tourists. Construction rapidly grew at the seafront followed by other expansions towards the interi-or once the seafront was overbuilt.This limit situation is not only alarming for the architecture community, but also for the hotels associations of the Balear Islands, who see the future success and continuity of their activity closely related to the need of a urban and legal rearrangement of the whole place.
The aim is a redesign of the seafront of Cala Millor while taking advantage of the fact that the city council has decided to push back the automobile accessible area away from the seafront, making more space for pedestrian walkways and public spaces.

The concept of the design is to show that sustainability could also define the look and is not just a question of power generation. Therefore the central reservations are connected to a steady public park and even enlar-ged. The connection between Cala Millor itself and the beach consists of green sweeps, giving the visitor the chance to walk between the crown of palms and seeing nature from a higher level.
In the middle of the beach of Cala Millor this idea is rea-lized in an even bigger way. Here, a scaled up sweep connects the city with the ocean and appears as a green footprint. Some of the toes content aquariums with algas, which are lightened up at night. The big sweep also gives you the possibility to walk under the ocean and see the beauty in something so useful like the produce of bioethanol, by the algaes. At the seasi-de of Cala Millor there are the perfect opportunities for them to grow, like many sunshine hours and seawater. Generallly the reaping of the algaes icould be based on the use of iron particles which are absorbed by them, making gravitation pull possible. Following, the algas can be pulled out without filters or blowing off water. The resulting bioethanol could be refined into bio fuel, which can be used for transportations and also as heating oil for the actual building.
The room under the ocean itself could be used as an underwater council chamber, offering Cala Millor a meeting place for concerts, exhibitions or city festivals.

Nowhere in Hamburg such highly symbolic differences are clashing into each other, like the former disreputable red lights-destrict St. Pauli evolving into a clean, posh and polish neighborhood. But not only that the numerous mutlistorey buildings are changing the face and the charakter of the originally compartmentalized area of St. Pauli, but also increa-sing the rents significantly. The skyline is know mostly domi-nated by the three glass-skyscrapers: Astratower, luxury hotel `Empire Riverside` and the Atlantichouse.
Through this gentrification, the former tenants can‘t afford living in their neigborhood anymore and are forced to move.Futhermore, the `Esso-Häuser‘ as a part of social housing is one of the only bastions against this development, symboli-zing the traditional strong and unlimited connection between housing and business.

ARCHITECTONIC PARASITISMAlong the habour of Hamburg, there is a parastitc use of the container as living-, working- and event space. The particular place can be used individual and short- or longterm.
ECONOMIC PARASITISMSmaller shops benefit from the economi-cal established buisnesses around, like the `Dollhouse‘. Because of their position they are able to be a real alternativ.
SOCIAL PARASITISMThe "Essohäuser" as former social
housing benefit from the nearby, latterlending gas station as well as theimage of the red lights district.
CULTURAL PARASITISMThe ` Dancing Towers` benefit from the image of the red lights-district St. Pauli, as well as its cultural offers.

After analyzing the social and economical strcture in St. Pauli, the focus came on the countless parasitic connectios sourrounding. Generally the complex requirements of the shops, tourists, visitor and residents. Because of their complexity an hybrid, inter-fering structure is established. Especially through the strong identifcation with the district of St. Pauli and its history a preservati-on and renovation of the `Essohäuser‘ beco-mes necessairy.
General, the gas station (as part of the city planning history of the district) should be the starting point for a parasitic connection, inspi-red by the various parasitic relations. This parasite should dissolve the already existing and spacial hierarchies,economic hierarchies and generate additional qualities like pros-pect and attraction through through different
levels.
Eventually the parasite is reaching the roof of the second house, which could be the per-fect situation for a hostel and a compensati-onal location for the famous club `Molotow‘. Futhermore it establishes the opportunity of an outer walk and enables a restructuring of the relevant floors of both buildings.
Also, through the demolition of the former arcade of shops the courtyard can be con-nected with its neighborhood. There the design language of the parasite historical `Spielbuden‘ stalls. These could serve the typical buisnesses of St. Pauli and their number can be increased by time, depen-dent on the demand. But because of the spaciousness and small-scale of the stalls no optical design competition through the parasite is established.
