1.0 LANDSCAPE SUMMARY
The landscape design proposals for the Drouin Civic Park identified in the Master Plan (March 2017) have been prepared by GroupGSA in consultation with Baw Baw Shire Council. This ensures the landscape design approach complement and reinforces the vison outlined in the Master Plan key recommendations. The proposed landscape design will assist integrate the park within the overall development context, provide realistic and achievable outcomes, and reinforce the overall vision for the project.
The landscape design principles adopted for the landscaped areas of the Drouin Civic Park consider the following:
GREEN:
> Open space and natural elements
> Predominately indigenous and native plant types with ornamental species in limited numbers to create highlights
> Environmental – solar access, shade, sustainable
ACCESSIBLE :
> Connected and legible paths
> Multiple entry points
> DDA compliant
> Safety within the park - all weather paths for walking and riding
ACTIVE :
> Adaptable and flexible spaces to ensure the outdoor spaces are frequently used and activated
> Visual connections to provide passive surveillance opportunities
> Fitness and recreation activities
COMMUNITY:
> A variety of spaces for gathering and meeting to improve social activities
> Children’s play – using the open space and upgrade playground
FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTABLE :
> Spaces that can be used for a variety of activities throughout the day, or week, or seasons
> Functional and social spaces
It is intended the various open space and landscape typologies provide visual amenity as well as an attractive open space environment where the community have pride in their civic park. This will in turn, contribute to a safe and vibrant community environment where strong social bonds are created.
The proposed landscape plans and typical sections illustrated are based on Vicmap survey data, aerial imagery and on-site inspections. The accuracy of the dimensions and survey information are indicative only and to be confirmed at detailed design stage.

This section of the park is located in the north-east area and includes new features that will activate the Hopetoun Road entry point.
At the Hopetoun Road entrance, visitors are welcomed with a fitness station that can be used for a warm up or as a resting and meeting place. The fitness station will include a variety of all-ages equipment and sited around a hard surface exercise loop. New trees in the background will fringe the exercise loop to provide shade without blocking passive surveillance opportunities.
Proposed swale planting will enhance the existing overland drainage situation and also provide opportunities for interpretive signage for the existing wetlands (Froggy Hollow). The Froggy Hollow upgrade will include a new seating area and a boardwalk crossing the existing wetland. Users of the Froggy Hollow boardwalk will get to appreciate the natural environment via an alternative route to the fitness station or the proposed play space area.

The proposed play space area incorporates a large array of diverse and challenging play equipment, where all people from various ages and abilities can engage and actively enjoy the facilities.
The concept design is in correlation to the Master Plan report and public consultation and includes nature play by using the existing slope and encouraging children/ young people to move, explore, experiment and learn through their play.
To ensure a safe environment, the playscape area incorporates landscape buffers between the designated shared paths, chicane pathways to slow down bike traffic and feature wall barriers around the active spaces.
Sitting areas are scattered throughout the play space and are positioned to allow passive surveillance under shady trees. New shelters are centralised to the play space and car park area to indicate an entry node. BBQs are sited to encourage access and use by all, and additional picnic settings are provided away from the BBQs to encourage communal and shared use.
The existing kickabout area has been retained and framed with proposed trees allowing users to utilise this as a multi-use open space.
Abutting the play space and kickabout area, the existing carpark upgrade will include additional parking bays and will incorporate a rain garden feature for water catchment.

The systematic design of the Plant Collection area is based on the existing tree’s species that have been planted in a way to emulate ‘outdoor rooms’.
The existing trees play a vital part in defining the local character and identity of a community open space area, and as such, attention has been paid to selecting the appropriate species for the different landscaped areas within the planting rooms. Consideration of scale, aspect, foliage and flowering habits throughout the changing seasons has been made to the choice of existing trees for the different microclimates within the rooms.
The Plant Collection Rooms are activated by a path that zigzags through the trees and the existing slope. Informal sitting areas allows users to rest and appreciate the natural settings.
