CHASING ICE

DIR. JEFF ORLOWsKI 2012 | UsA | 76 MIn

FRI MAY 3 & SAT MAY 4 - 7:00 PM

SUN MAY 12 - 2:00 PM

Join us for a panel discussion on May 12 with Curt Hull (Project Manager of the Climate Change Connection) and others, on the issues confronting global climate change

In the spring of 2005, national Geographic photographer James Balog headed to the Arctic on a tricky assignment: to capture images to help tell the story of the Earth's changing climate. Even with a scientific upbringing, Balog had been a skeptic about climate change and a cynic about the nature of academic research. But that first trip north opened his eyes to the biggest story in human history and sparked a challenge within him that would put his career and his very well-being at risk. Chasing Ice is the story of one man's mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Chasing Ice depicts a photographer trying to deliver evidence and hope to our carbon-powered planet.

Very few films can say their opening scene involves the main character breaking the director’s nose, but as this film’s title suggests Ginger Baker is a man to approach with caution. A madman and a genius best known for his work with Cream and Blind Faith, Baker is often lauded as the inventor of rock ’n’ roll drumming. the film now finds him living in his fortified compound in south Africa, with his 29-year-old internet bride and 39 polo ponies. Featuring interviews with his ex-wives, living musicians who know him (Eric Clapton, steve Winwood, Charlie Watts) this is a look back at a tumultuous career through explosive interviews with one of rock’s greatest characters. He returns to the stage in a 30 day sold out American tour caught on film. – Hot Docs

WAKE IN FRIGHT

DIR. tED KOtCHEFF 1971 | AUstRALIA | 109 MIn

(German w/English subtitles)

FRI MAY 17 & SAT MAY 18 - 9:00 PM

SUN MAY 19 - 7:00 PM

Alongside Mad Max and Walkabout, Wake in Fright is widely acknowledged as one of the seminal films in the development of modern Australian cinema. Wake in Fright tells the nightmarish story of a schoolteacher’s descent into personal demoralization at the hands of drunken, deranged derelicts while stranded in a small town in outback Australia. Believed to be lost for decades and virtually unseen until now, Wake in Fright returns fully-restored in stunning HD in what the new York Observer says “may be the greatest Australian film ever made.”

"A deeply – and I mean deeply – unsettling and disturbing movie. I saw it when it premiered at Cannes in 1971, and it left me speechless. It's beautifully calibrated. “

SUN MAY 26 - 7:00 PM

WED MAY 29 - 7:00 PM

Skype Q&A with co-directors Jason Lapeyre and Rob Wilson on May 24

One of the smartest films at tIFF was this unique, exciting look at a gang of kids playing war games in the woods. Former Winnipeg writer and director Jason Lapeyre has created a tense story of several 12-year-old kids out for a fun time only to see events escalate in a chilling manner where power, jealousy and authority rise to the fore like the British classic Lord of The Flies or The Hunger Games.

“Armed with an arsenal of extremely talented child actors and combining shades of Full Metal Jacket and Lord of the Flies, Jason Lapeyre and Robert Wilson have created a one-of-a-kind action film.”

"Gorgeous, deeply mysterious and unsettling. Kiarostami's mastery is on immediate display. A bewitching and intriguingly ambiguous exploration of the roles we play with one another, and how nothing is quite what it appears to be....resonates with one long after the film is over."

".... a haunting world of photographic landscapes. The impressionistic aspect of this luminous series of compositions is worthy of greats such as Bela Tarr and Andrei Tarkovsky. Winnipeg-Montréal-Halifax filmmaker Solomon Nagler brings an intuitive elegance to a modern-day tale of characters adrift.”

THE SHINING

DIR. stAnLEY KUBRICK 1980 | UsA | 146 MIn

FRI JUN 28 & SAT JUN 29 - 9:00 PM

Based on stephen King's classic novel, stanley Kubrick's spellbinding foray into the realm of the horror film, is at its most gloriously diabolical as Jack and Wendy torrance take the grand tour…through the Overlook, the cavernous, isolated hotel where they and their young son Danny will be spending the winter as caretakers. In the hotel, the torrances find dozens of empty rooms, ominously huge windows, knives all over the kitchen and a maze on the front lawn...

"This is the story of a man gradually driven to destroy his wife and child, and it stops just short of pinpointing his rage...hair-raising...meticulously detailed and never less than fascinating."

Alina gets back from Germany to bring Voichita – the only person she loves and was loved by in this world – back to her. But Voichita found God – and God is the most difficult lover one can be jealous of.

VICTOR JARA: THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN PEACE

DIR. CARMEn LUZ PAROt | 1999 | CHILE | 100 MIn

(Spanish w/English subtitles)

SUN MAY 5 - 7:00 PM

september 11, 2013 is the 40th Anniversary of Chile’s coup d’etat. the coup and its aftermath saw countless human rights violations, and many people were tortured and disappeared. As a result of this, Canada and Manitoba opened up its doors to receive many refugees from this community who were in perilous situations at the time. nearly 40 years later, the Winnipeg Chilean community has come together to reflect upon this history through a series of public programs. this screening of Victor Jara: The Right to Live in Peace is the inaugural event by the Chile 40 Winnipeg coalition, in partnership with the Mayworks Festival of Labour and the Arts and Winnipeg Cinematheque.

Victor Jara: The Right to Live in Peace focuses on the life and art of Victor Jara, who was revered within Chile for his work as a singer-songwriter, theatre director, folklorist and political activist. With historical footage and interviews, the film describes the dramatic story of how Jara, the son of an illiterate peasant, rose to international prominence as a Chilean folk singer. He eventually became one of the main proponents of Chilean “nueva canción” (new song) movement, which struggled through music and the arts to re-establish democracy in Chile. But his very prominence led to his ultimate detention, torture, and assassination days after the coup, chillingly recounted in the film. this documentary is a moving tribute and testimony to an artist of great vision and leadership, whose work helped unite a movement under a central goal: the right to live in peace.

Advance tickets are available online at www.winnipegcinematheque.com or at the Cinematheque office, 018 – 100 Arthur Street.

LEVIATHAN DIRs. LUCIEn CAstAInG-tAYLOR & VÉRÉnA PARAVEL 2012 | FRAnCE, UK, UsA | 87 MIns

THU MAY 23 - 7:00 PM

Preceded by a program of shorts curated by Open City. Skype interview with the directors and followed by a reception in the Artspace lobby.

Ever wonder what a documentary about the commercial fishing industry would look like from the product’s point of view? Leviathan is that documentary, or the closest we’ll ever come to it – an immersive, almost assaultive piece of subjective cinema designed to literally plunge us into the deep, experiencing the catch of the day from inside the nets. In collaboration with Harvard’s sensory Ethnography Lab, directors Lucien Castaing-taylor and Véréna Paravel strapped HD cameras to fishermen on a series of voyages. they’ve assembled the footage into a narrative of sorts, recreating a single night’s fishing off the new Bedford coast, where some of the action of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick took place.
