Many factors go into building a house.

One of those important factors is planning.

A tool used for planning is called a Bill of Materials or BOM.

This is a document that lists out the materials needed to build the house.

The BOM can be a very lengthy and involved document. Just think of all the materials that go into building a house - from the main framing members to the small nails used for trim work.

All of these things cost money and need to be accounted for. The BOM can help organize this process.

The easiest way to create a BOM is on the computer.

You can use a software program that creates spreadsheets or tables since the information is usually easiest to read in a chart format.

There are many software programs made specifically for creating BOMs, but they are usually for much bigger projects than what we’ll be doing.
