SECTIONBANDSTANDS
CARR BANK MEMORIAL PARK, Mansfield
Client: Mansfield District Council
Mansfield District Council asked us to design and manufacture the bespoke Edwardian-style structure, which complements a war memorial at the historic park.
We created 3D visuals and CAD drawings of the proposed octagonal bandstand to show the council exactly what would be manufactured. Proposals included the structure’s bespoke cast aluminium balustrades, based on old archive photographs of the park, and its two-tier roof with a zinc-finish roofing sheet and intricate metalwork.
The bandstand was fabricated to the highest specification in our well-equipped workshops near Halifax, in West Yorkshire, using prime quality structural steel with cast aluminium support columns, pedestals, ornate floral capitals and spandrel brackets. A zinc finish curved roofing sheet was fitted over a steel skeletal
framework with intricate metalwork. We also made bespoke decorative balustrades with integral handrail.
Our team battled the elements to install the bandstand in the centre of the park during the cold winter months at the start of 2012. The eight-sided frame was erected and the roof was then lowered on to it, with its solid oak boarded ceiling sitting at eaves height. This was fitted with integral vandal-proof lighting, innovative concealed water run-offs and power outlets.
The park now enjoys an impressive bandstand measuring 9.0 metres in diameter by 8.5 metres in height.
We also made and supplied 20 cast iron park benches to complement the bandstand.

PAULTONS FAMILY THEME PARK, The New Forest
Client: Paultons Park, The New Forest
Paultons Park, the family theme park set in the New Forest, has over 70 rides and attractions set in 140 acres of parkland, and is famous as the home of Peppa Pig World.
The park’s latest addition of an impressive Japanese Garden features a magnificent themed Japanese-style pagoda, supplied by Andy Thornton.
The pagoda stands an impressive 5.45 metres in height and 5.0 metres in diameter. It features steel support columns and railing panels with one open side for access. The main feature is the curved two-tier roof structure, incorporating tile-effect metal roof panels with six symbolic carved Japanese ‘Shachihoko’ figures to the lower tier.
We also supplied the iconic red arched Moon Gate, which represents the moon rising in the sky. Both structures were pre-fabricated in our Elland workshops, before being dismantled for powder coating and installation.
This is not the first time Paultons Park have commissioned specialist architectural metalwork from Andy Thornton.
In 2014 we manufactured and installed a magnificent Victorian-style bandstand to complement the antique double-decker fairground carousel ride, both set in the beautiful period-themed garden of the park. At 6.5 metres in diameter and 6.3 metres tall, this imposing hexagonal structure was built using components from our popular Victorian colonnade system.
The bandstand features decorative cast balustrade panels, spandrels and timber handrails with one open side for access. The ornate columns, with detailed capitals, have structural steel cores to hold the elaborate roof structure.
The eye-catching, two-tier curved roof was fabricated in steel and clad in a sheet aluminum skin up to a convex cupola with decorative capping and an impressive weather vane. The roof was finished in a resilient dark green powder coat, with the main structure in satin black.

HAMMERSMITH RAM, Hammersmith, London
Client: Young & Co’s Brewery plc Designers: Harrison Design Main Contractor: Cummins & Pope Ltd
Hammersmith Ram is a vibrant pub situated in the heart of the local community, just a short walk from iconic theatres the Lyric and the Apollo, boasting a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Pub retailer Young’s identified the need for a glazed canopy to provide all-year-round shelter for those customers wishing to eat, drink and socialise outside.
We were specified by Harrison Design to manufacture and install the impressive L-shaped canopy, which measures 6.7 metres long by 4.1 metres, to provide cover for the busy street-side seating area. We then worked closely with main contractor Cummins & Pope Ltd on its installation.
The canopy’s timeless design was based on our best-selling Circle colonnade system and features Seaton decorative columns, with an ornate frieze panel running across the front of the structure. A rainwater gutter around the perimeter of the shelter neatly creates a water run-off, filtering the rainwater underground.
The roof and gable is glazed in 6 mm thick toughened safety glass, retained in our two-part patent-glazing system. Vertical glazing panels in 10 mm safety glass create a subtle, transparent wall of protection from the elements, not detracting from the appearance of the existing building. The structure was then finished in a durable gloss black polyester powder coat.

EXMOUTH COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Client: Exmouth Community College Contract Caterers: Innovate Services Architect: TFQ Architects
For Exmouth Community College, we manufactured and installed two major freestanding outdoor structures, creating year-round alfresco dining areas for the pupils. The first structure, an enormous 20 metres × 14 metres, was installed in 2009 and proved so popular with students that we were invited to provide an additional shelter, which features a lock-up servery kiosk.
Working to initial concept drawings supplied by the architects and liaising closely with contract caterers Innovate Services, we proposed using columns and frieze panels from our popular Circle colonnade system. The framework was fabricated in mild steel section and as well as the attractive decorative castings below the guttering, includes an elaborate double-pitched roof, all painted in a black semi-gloss polyester powder coat paint finish. Glazing is in 6 mm toughened safety glass.
The second structure, a 20 metre × 7 metre rectangular shelter with single-pitch roof manufactured using the same decorative detail, was installed in 2012 and includes a kiosk to one end, incorporating roller shutter doors.

We manufactured and installed this impressive new entrance canopy at the historic Haverthwaite railway station, in the picturesque Leven valley at the southern end of Lake Windermere. The structure was designed to be sympathetic to the existing building and extend the amenities of the business, including a ticket office, gift shop and restaurant. It also provides shelter for passengers making their way to and from the trains.
The station now features a canopy comprising of cast aluminium railway style columns, mild steel sections and bespoke teardrop friezes, all finished in a black powder-coated finish. The roof comprises 6 mm toughened glass panels. The project took three months to complete from start to finish, with the canopy in place for the start of the tourist season. SMITH & WOLLENSKY, London
When quintessential American steakhouse experience Smith & Wollensky opened its first venue outside the US, in the West End of London, they turned to Andy Thornton to supply this impressive curved entrance canopy. The iconic building needed a decorative structure in keeping with its stunning architecture, and this 3 metre wide by 2 metre deep sloping cantilevered canopy certainly achieved that.
An elegant circle frieze to the perimeter of the frame is supported on two curved spandrels with load-bearing tie bars above. The structure is glazed in 10 mm thick toughened safety glass, retained in our two-part patent-glazing system. It also incorporates a structural gutter to the abutment of the building.

RUBENS AT THE PALACE, LondonClient: Red Carnation Hotels Architect: LCE Architects
Located on Buckingham Palace Road, only yards from the palace and just a short walk from Westminster Abbey, the majestic hotel, built in 1911, needed a grand entrance to match its 4 star luxury status.
The design brief was simply to replace the existing tired and rather incongruous 1960s structure with a canopy more befitting the period of the building and its fine façade.
The complete structure was fabricated in the Andy Thornton workshops in West Yorkshire, before being dismantled and transported to site for installation. The cantilevered canopy was secured to a concealed beam and hung from two wall-mounted tension rods.
Due to the hotel’s location, the canopy had to be installed with the least disruption to guests, tourists and traffic. Despite having to work behind a restrictive wooden hoarding, the fixing team managed to install the complete structure within the two week allocation.

This attractive Victorian-style glazed veranda was installed on the front elevation of a country manor house to the north of York. The structure provides an extensive terrace shelter overlooking the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Yorkshire, whilst totally transforming the appearance of the building.
The design of this 27-metre-long structure was based on our popular Victorian colonnade system. We manufactured the complete veranda in our workshops prior to installation on site on concrete pads and paved terracing provided by T.Howell.
Eight structural steel columns incorporate decorative cast capitals and fluted bases, which have been combined with intricately cast aluminium spandrel brackets to add more than a touch of elegance to the large veranda.
The roof, which projects 3.7 metres from the house facade, features clear toughened safety glass retained in our two part patent-glazing system. Rain water from the roof cleverly discharges down the columns via the extruded aluminium guttering. 27 Esplanade is a prestigious commercial property on the shore-front in St Helier, Jersey, by developer Dandara, one of the UK’s largest independent property companies. Almost half the office space forms the new headquarters for JTC, the global equity fund administrators.
Andy Thornton Ltd was approached by Dandara’s quantity surveyor Giles McDermott to quote to supply the sixth-floor external terrace balustrade, two interior staircase handrails and a rear entrance balustrade, all designed by the architects Axis Mason. The stylish 25-metre long terrace balustrade was fabricated in mirror-finish 316 grade stainless steel in our workshops in Elland. The 1100 mm tall balustrade with a 0.74 kN/metre loading, features decorative laser-cut fins, between laminated toughened glass with polished edges and a 51 mm handrail. BELVEDERE, St Saviour, Jersey
Client: Dandara Group
Belvedere is a mixed residential development of traditional family homes and apartments by award-winning property company Dandara, set among the rolling fields of St Saviour, Jersey. Situated on the site of the old Jersey Dairy, the homes provide the perfect option for countryside living with easy access to all parts of the island.
We have worked closely with Dandara since commencement of the development in 2011, to provide decorative architectural metalwork through the various phases of the development. We provided two pairs of impressive 3.5-metre-tall arched entrance gates for the two main entrances to the scheme. These heavy-duty automatic vehicular access gates, with matching pedestrian gates between substantial columns, were fabricated in our workshops in solid mild steel.
Belvedere consists of a range of classically designed homes and apartments, which, whilst maintaining a traditional architectural design, have been created for modern living. Many incorporate a ‘Juliette’ balcony or shared balcony balustrade overlooking the green open spaces and communal gardens. We fabricated these in mild steel, with 50 × 50 support posts, cast ball finials and flat bar handrails. We also supplied the wall-mounted curved railing sections and arched garden gates for many of the houses, all polyester powder-coated in black.
