BUILDING CONSTRUCTION
CET 210 Masonry Wiki Assignment

Metals are used extensively in building
construction. • Steel: durable and stiff; ideal structural element.
• Aluminum: lightweight and malleable; relatively weather resistant; preferred
material for exterior applications; good conductor, often found in electrical,
plumbing, and heating applications.
• Copper: superior conductor and extremely malleable; can be soldered on site;
common component in plumbing, electrical and weatherproofing
• Alloys and other metals are used for their specific properties of corrosion/heat
resistance, rigidity, durability, malleability, elasticity, conductivity, etc.
• Iron
• Brass
• Stainless steel
• Lead
• Tungsten
• Bronze
• Tin
• Zinc
• Titanium
• Silver (in solder)
• Nickle
• Electroplating

Aluminum and other weather resistant metals are common exterior finishes on residential and commercial buildings.
Depending on the application, galvanized sheet metal, anodized coil-stock (Galvalum), aluminum, copper, and stainless steel are choice materials for element protection. Here are some various exterior uses for different metals.
