description

Archewallogy is a labor of documentation of the walls of the city between 2005 and 2009, when Lebanon was experiencing a series of transformations on the socio-political level. This book compiles images most of which do not exist any longer, indicating the incredible speed of turnover that the urban environment experiences. The quasi totality of the images were taken in Beirut, a city that has been destroyed and rebuilt seven times and which offers strata both horizontally and vertically. Translation and contextualization of the images is not offered on purpose, because just like caricature, what is written on the wall is understood today but needs much explanation later, something that the quick pace of the city does not allow and therefore explaining them goes against the raison d'être of their existence.

  • Praise for Getting The News From Poems (2009):I thought it was fascinating, if a bit bewildering and over-caffeinated at times: quick and liquid, a

sort of Kerouac/Joycean spilling forth of energy and thought. It has momentum, certainly. There

is plenty to admire, the mom with her two coffees and 13 mini-cookies, the stuff about passengers

clapping when a plane lands safely in the Middle East. It is bound to go places. Anthony Doerr

it is, and here, I am referring to Chemalys self-note of him trying to be a human being in the inner

flap of the book, a task at which he supremely succeeds. Alain de Botton - Author of How Proust

Comical, ironic and filled with symbolism and allegory, [Chemalys] poems are cleverly wrought

Somehow in his artwork, to which the self-made book is inextricably linked, Chemaly manages to
