PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE17th Sunday of the Year A. July 26, 2020

What would you ask for if God appears to you and ask you to make a wish? King Solomon suc-ceeded his father David as king of Israel. At the beginning of his reign as king, he went to Gibeon to offer sacrifice to the Lord. While he was seeking God’s face, he dreamt that God appeared to him and asked him to make a single wish. King Solomon asked God for wisdom. For Solomon to ask for wisdom shows that he was already wise. He was looking for the best way to serve the people that God has entrusted to his care, so he asked God to give him the wisdom to make right judge-ments. God was pleased with Solomon and gave him not only wisdom but other good things. King Solomon became rich, famous, and respected by all. He treasured the people God entrusted to his care and he pleased God in serving them. Even though he was given wisdom, we know that Solomon did not keep using the wisdom to serve God’s people well.

In the Gospel of Matthew, we see that the author also treasured God and his kingdom. As a Jew writing to fellow Jews, St. Matthew revered God so much that he never addressed Him by name. That is why he used the phrase “the Kingdom of Heaven” all through his gospel rather than “the Kingdom of God” used by St. Mark and St. Luke. The twenty-eight chap-ters of the Gospel of Matthew could be structured in such a way that chapter thirteen becomes the central theme of his writing. This is the chapter about the kingdom which we have been reading for the past three weeks.

In today’s gospel, Jesus gave three other parables about the kingdom of heaven. The first described the kingdom of heaven as a treasure buried in a field. When someone finds the treasure, he sells everything in other to buy the field. The second parable described the kingdom of heaven as a pearl of great price. A merchant who finds the pearl sells ev-erything he owned to purchase the pearl. In the two parables, the persons who discovered the treasure and the pearl made it their highest priority. For them, nothing else was more important. They sold everything else to possess the treasure or pearl. They gave all their time in search of this treasure. The highest good for a Christian is to behold the face of God in heaven. This must be our focus and so we should be ready to give up everything else in search of the kingdom. Our greatest joy and happiness is to have found Christ.

The third parable in today’s gospel of the fishing net that gathered up good fish as well as bad fish, is like the parable of the wheat and the weeds that we read last Sunday. The church, the kingdom comprises now of both saints and sinners. At the end of time, the perennial problem of evil in the world will be resolved. It is a message to trust in God’s final judgment and to be patient until that time comes. The good fish and the bad fish represent two types of things of superior and inferi-or quality. It will erroneous to fall into John Calvin’s form of predestination that argues that human beings are created this way too. Following such logic then, Calvin’s view is that God created us destined to either heaven or hell, and we cannot change our destiny. This way of thinking is contrary to the Catholic faith and contradicts the entire message of the gospel.

If we are to ask for one thing from God, will it not be wise for us to ask for union with him? It is in him that we can find our joy, our peace. This is the treasure, the pearl of great price that can satisfy all our longings.

Thank You: We were blessed to have Fr. Robert Kajoh, MSP with us for our Lenten Mission this year. Unfortunately, most of us could not come to church for the mission due to the outbreak of the pandemic. For that same reason, Fr. Robert could not return to Nigeria at the end of March. He was finally able to get back to Nigeria last Saturday to continue his ministry as a Counsellor in the MSP Central Administration in Nigeria. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to you all for your dedication, faith, and togetherness at St. Mary Magdalene. Fr. Akama Ukanide, MSP who came from Nigeria for some medical procedure since January was also able to return to Nigeria last Saturday. He too expressed his appreciation for your prayers and support while he was with us. We ask God to be with them in their ministries.

Rite of Christian Initiation: The pandemic made Easter celebrations quite different this year. We could not gather for the Easter Triduum, and could not celebrate the highpoint of our church life, the Easter Vigil. Our candidates and catechu-mens who had prepared all year long to receive the sacraments of initiation have been waiting since Easter. On August 1st at 10:00am and 12:30pm these candidates will receive the sacraments of initiation and become full Catholics. Join them in prayers. We express our gratitude to the RCIA team of our parish for accompanying them on this journey. Con-gratulations!

Have a blessed week ahead and stay cool!!

Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSPPastor

Stewardship Reflections

July 26th - Stewardship Faith: “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” - ROMANS 8:28Do you really trust God? Do you really believe that God will provide all that you need? Stewardship faith is a challenge for everyone at times. Putting our trust in God, in every-thing we do, in good times and in bad, means that God’s plan for our lives may be quite different than what we planned. When one door closes, another one opens. Trust in God, His plan is always better.

DID YOU EVER WONDER HOW YOU GOT HERE OR WHERE YOU'RE GOING? ANIMA SERIES: Discovering a Deeper Relationship with the Holy Spirit.

We are all longing for a sense of greater meaning in our lives. In the ANIMA series, Bishop Donald Hying leads us through an inspiring account of how God's plan for the world gives each of us great dignity and purpose. He recounts that through Christ's Incarna-tion, Resurrection, and the Institution of the Church, God reveals the meaning of all life. Accompanied by stirring music, stunning videography, and insight-ful narration, this three-part series will instigate fur-ther meditation on how you can respond to Christ's sacrifice and continue carrying out his mission in his Church.

Join us for a three-part series Anima. Please, email Ginger if you're interested in participating. Once a week beginning on Thursday, August 13, I'll email you a 15-minute video and Participant Guide which you watch at your convenience. We'll discuss the video in a virtual group session via Skype Saturday, August 15 at 3 PM (part one, Crux); Saturday, August 22 at 3 PM (part two, Kenosis); and Saturday, August 29 at 3 PM (part 3, Blaze).

MENSAJE DEL PÁRROCO

Page 13 | July 26, 2020

Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSP Pastor
