Year of Faith Starting from 11 th October 2012 to 24 th November 2013, Pope Benedict XVI has declared a YEAR OF FAITH. It is to be a special time of grace and blessings for the universal church. The year of faith began during the Synod of Bishops called together by the Pope from 7 th to 28 th October this year. The theme of the Synod was New Evangelization For The Transmission Of Christian Faith. The synod marks the 50 th year of the commencement of Vatican Council II and the 20 th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church both of which have great influence to make the church relevant to the world today. We hope that the synod will generate a desire to know better the teaching of the Church and the documents of Vatican II and greater enthusiasm to deepen our relationship with Christ. The Archdiocese of Guwahati arranged a whole day animation programme on the Year of Faith for the Priests and religious of the Archdiocese on 4 th September. The same theme was taken up for the Pastoral Conference of the Archdiocese. We were helped in the animation by the Rector and professors of Oriens Theological College, Shillong. Participation in both the events was very good and the participants were enthused with the idea of evangelization – of reaching out to people who do not yet know Christ, deepening the faith of those who are already Catholics and bringing back to Christian fold and practice those who have wandered from faith due to various reasons. Awareness was created that authentic witness of each one of us is required to make our efforts at evangelization a success and every Catholic especially the consecrated persons should make every occasion a moment for evangelization. In order to make the YEAR OF FAITH relevant to the Archdiocese the following Action Plan has been drawn up. 1. We will inaugurate the Year of Faith by hoisting a Year of Faith Flag on Mission Sunday this year or any other appropriate occasion in the month of October. 2. All communities and families will recite the Year of Faith prayer. The prayer is printed in three languages namely, Assamese, English and Garo and will be recited all through the Year of Faith. The flag and the prayer cards are available in the Archbishop’s House with the secretary. 3. A chain Eucharistic Adoration will be arranged in every parish/village/institution of the Archdiocese. It will begin on 23rd October and will conclude on 24 November next year. Dates are allotted to each parish and institution and the list is enclosed. Every parish priest and head of the institution will arrange at least an hour of adoration on the dates allotted to them. They may continue the practice longer if they wish to do so. The Parish Priests will make arrangements to have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the villages and zones besides arranging it in the parish so that all our Catholics will get a chance to adore the Eucharistic Lord. The head of the institution should plan the adoration for the greatest possible benefit. In villages, for example, we can begin the day with adoration and conclude it in the afternoon with confessions and Holy Mass that the programme becomes a memorable event for the people. 4. Make the Bible/New Testament available to each family. Institutions and families in the parish can donate Bibles to the parish priest for distribution in the parish or distribute it in the neighbourhood. If possible the Bible should be installed in every family during the year and the members of the family should be encouraged to read a portion of the Bible daily. 5. Special emphasis will be given to Catechesis on Baptism this year that our Christians who bring their children for baptism may understand its value and spiritual meaning. 6. More SCCs (Small Christian Communities) will be set up in every parish and neighbourhood. It was decided during the Yesu Krist Jayanti 2000 that SCCs will be the new form of the Church in the North East India. Let us make it a reality this year. I am happy at the interest shown by the SCC commission and for your whole hearted cooperation. 7. A Bible exhibition and Quiz will be arranged during the year in order to increase the knowledge of people on Bible. I am sure that all of you will take an active interest in these programmes so that our faith is deepened. We pray that the Lord may open our hearts and work for the extension of his kingdom. Editorial Bishop Ernest Fitzgerald talks about a farmer who inspired him. He lived at the footsteps of Blueridge mountains. Dry weather, rain and frost destroyed his harvest at different times. This left him starving for days. Yet this elderly farmer was never anxious. One day Bishop asked him, “Was there any time you had to tide over some difficulties? Did you ever have sleepless nights? “Yes,” he said. “I had difficulties. But I slept comfortably at night,” he replied. “How?” the Bishop enquired. “I pray like this before I sleep, ‘Lord, You must be awake all through this night. There is no need for both of us to keep awake. At night, I will sleep. And you will keep awake. During the day I will carry on my duties and you can sleep.’”

We witness here the deep confidence of the farmer. Looking at our life we realize that often our faith grows amid storms of uncertainties and difficulties. Faith finds its most productive soil in disturbing moments. It is there where it comes into full fruition. In the letter to the Hebrews we read, “We have a great high priest” whom we can “confidently approach” to receive all the grace we need to live in this world (4:14-16). Jesus is our great high priest. He feels all our joys and triumphs, and he shares in our times of pain and doubt. He is with us even when we think we are all alone. He is pouring his grace on us even when we think the well has run dry. When we lose our trust in God anxieties overwhelm us; we lose our joy and peace, and make our life miserable. Then we look to Jesus who offers us love and mercy at every moment of our lives. In our baptism we were given the gift of faith. During the Year of faith which we have just begun Pope Benedict is inviting us to revive our faith and share it with others who have not known Jesus and are eager to come to him. Frederick William Faber says, “There is a wideness in God’s Mercy, like the wideness of all the sea.” Let us welcome our friends to this ocean of Mercy.

From Pope’s Message for the Year of faith

I called this special Year of Faith with the Apostolic Letter Porta Fidei, so that the Church might experience a renewed enthusiasm in her faith in Jesus Christ, the only Saviour of the world, reawaken her joy in walking on the way he has pointed out to us, and witness in a tangible way to the transforming power of faith. The 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council is an important occasion to return to God, to deepen and to live one’s faith more courageously, to strengthen one’s sense of belonging to the Church, the “teacher of humanity”, who through the proclamation of the Word, the celebration of the Sacraments and deeds of charity leads us to encounter and to know Christ, true God and true man. It is an encounter not with an idea or a plan of life, but with a living Person, who profoundly transforms us from within by revealing to us our true identity as children of God. Encountering Christ renews our human relationships by directing them, day by day, to a greater solidarity and fraternity, in accord with the logic of love. Faith in the Lord is not something that affects only our minds, the realm of intellectual knowledge; rather, it is a change involving the whole of our existence: our feelings, heart, mind, will, body, emotions and human relationships. With faith, everything changes in us and for us, and it reveals clearly our future destiny, the truth of our vocation in history, the meaning of our lives, the joy of being pilgrims en route to our heavenly homeland.

Seminar on New Evangelisation Guwahati: A Seminar on New evangelization was organized for the religious and clergy of the Archdiocese of Guwahati on September 4. Fr Kuriakose Poovatumkudy and Fr Jose Chirackal, from Oriens Theological College, Shillong were the resource persons. Explaining the theme Fr Kuriakose said, “ New Evangelisation is a call to renew Church’s evangelizing activity; is a timely tool in addressing the challenges of a rapidly-changing world; it is to bear witness and proclaim Jesus Christ to all.

Speaking on the demands of New Evangelization he said, “What is asked of us is ‘to fan the flame of faith’ and to equip Christian communities with a renewed fervour and passion for Christ and his message. New Evangelization is possible, if we have the ‘new eyes’ to see, ‘new ears’ to hear and ‘new mind’ to grasp and to discern.” Taking the example of Srimanta Sankaradeva he suggested that we search out for new and creative ways of proclaiming the Gospel. “He was Assam’s 15th century saint-scholar, socio-religious reformer and playwright. Srimanta Sankaradeva brought about Social revolution Assam, a new life in Assam. He purified many practices through creative ministry in religious practices. Sankaradeva sent out a clear message to his followers that devotion to God was not a business transaction, where one invested pragmatically with many gods to harvest rich dividends in return. Instead, true devotion was total submission to the Supreme God with deep and absorbing love. Devotion to God (bhakti) is essentially communitarian. “God is within the reach of every person, irrespective of caste or creed, colour or culture,” was the basic teaching of Sankaradeva. He passionately advocated the removal of human made social barriers and the demolition of the walls of religious discrimination on account of caste or creed. He established Namghar. Namghar is an open hall without fortified walls or bolted doors, symbolically conveying the message that it is opened to all, irrespective of one's caste or creed.” According to Fr Kuriokose, we can draw inspiration from the works of Sankaradeva, appreciate his philosophy of life and look at certain specific methodology he employed to reawaken the morbid and dormant religious fervour of the people of his time. He asked, “Can we present the message of the Gospel to the simple people in their family settings, assuring them that they could experience God in their ordinary work and routine duties? Can we

help them to make their homes ‘domestic churches’, where they could discover the Divine Presence in their conjugal life, being responsible parents and loving neighbours?” “Such method is nothing other than responding to the call of New Evangelization in loco, making families agents of evangelization. The need of the hour is a paradigm shift in our family apostolate,” he added. Speaking about the challenges in our mission he said, “People ought to understand our language. Is there any newness in our message? Do we make our message

DFNEI Meet Guwahati: Diocesan fraternity of North East India (DFNEI) held its 14th Biennial Convention from 17-19 October 2012, at Don Bosco Institute, Guwahati. The Theme for the meeting was “Empowering Diocesan Priests through Ongoing Formation”. About 140 priests from the 15 Dioceses of Northeast participated in the programme. In his keynote address, Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati, reminded the participants, “Priesthood means to think and act with the mind of the Church. Priests is a spiritual leader, a man

of compassion who makes the compassion of God credible to others. Reflecting upon Priest as a Leader he said, “Leadership means vision to know where he and his community want to go. Priest is a servant Leader who is always ready to be of service to those who approach him.” He urged the participants ‘to spend time before the Blessed Sacrament’, saying, “Prayer gives one the correct perception about ones vocation, and various activities.” Calling the priests to responsible use of God’s gifts,

Archbishop John said, “Stewardship is a lifelong process of prayer, reflection and action, leading to a conversion of mind and heart. Good stewardship comes slowly through the prompting of the Spirit. Accountability follows stewardship.” Bishop James Thoppil of Kohima, speaking on the ‘Challenge of Ongoing Formation of priests in the Northeast’ said, “Theological updating is a continuing and primary need of intellectual formation throughout the course of priestly ministry.” According to him, “The appropriate period for a priest to learn and cultivate pastoral competencies is after ordination when the opportunity for application and practice becomes available.” “Intellectual Formation is truly faith seeking understanding, driven forward by love for the people served,” he added. In his presidential address Fr Abraham, Nirappel, President of DFNEI, exhorted the participants “to evaluate the effectiveness of our commitment.” He said, “We need to strengthen our commitment and rededicate ourselves, as the society in which we live is constantly changing.” Fr V M Thomas, the Salesian Provincial of Guwahati, and the Guest of honour, speaking on the theme suggested the participants, “to be the change you want to see.” He said, “Our mission to the people remain unchanging. So we need all-round growth as part of ongoing formation.” The gathering honoured Most Rev. Joseph Mittathany, Emeritus Archbishop of Imphal, the Founding father of DFNEI for his outstanding ministry for the people of Northeast. He completed 43 years as Bishop and 53 years as priest. The DFNEI was founded in 1985 at Dimapur with the aim of “greater holiness and pastoral commitment of priests, and to build up the body of Christ through the ministry of a priest,” explained Fr Abraham Nirappel, President of DFNEI. Prayer Cell formed by Women Panbazar: Since 2008 a prayer Cell formed under the leadership of Mercy Alex is attracting many Christian and non Christian women to spend time with the Eucharistic Lord at Guru Jesu Bhavan. Says Mercy, “I started the prayer cell for women, so that others may also taste the love of Jesus which I am enjoying. Being a counsellor I get to know the pains others are going through, and I felt prayer is the answer to many of our problems, and as a group we can pray for the needy. This is what inspired me to begin the “Tuesday Fasting Prayer” at Guru Jesu Bhavan.” The group numbering 20 now has completed 210 Tuesdays of prayer by August 2012. Many in the group are non Christians. The prayer lasts from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm. News from Around Lourdes: Affected by Flood French authorities are assessing the damage to the Catholic pilgrim town of Lourdes that has been swamped by the overflowing River Gave. Around 500 pilgrims had to be rescued from hotels along the river bank. Two campsites were cleared and several roads were closed. The town attracts visitors from all over the world to a place where Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to a peasant girl in 1858. The place where it’s said to have happened is also under water. The evacuees were looked after in makeshift rescue centres on higher ground. No one was reported harmed. Local people said they had not seen anything like it for 40 years. Only the basilica above the town was spared from the water. Authorities say that last year, six million pilgrims visited Lourdes. The story of a woman who was cured by a miracle

How Blessed Marianne Cope, who was canonized recently, saved a woman who was suffering from a deadly infection. United States: Though she had always believed in miracles, Sharon Smith never dreamed she would be the recipient of one.

Her unexplained recovery from a near fatal infection in 2005 was the second miracle that cleared the way for the Oct. 21 canonization of Blessed Marianne Cope. Smith will present Pope Benedict XVI a relic of Blessed Marianne — a bone fragment housed in a wooden tau cross, or T-shaped cross that is the symbol of St. Francis, the inspiration of Mother Marianne’s

congregation. A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Smith fainted in her home one day in 2005 and woke up two months later in St. Joseph’s Hospital, her body perforated by tubes as doctors fought to keep her hydrated and alive. She had been diagnosed with pancreatitis, but the inflammation soon caused an infection so severe, it ate away part of her gastrointestinal tract.

Her doctor told her that July, “Sharon, you’re not going to make it,” she told Catholic News Service in Rome Oct.19. She and about 90 others from the Diocese of Syracuse, including Bishop Robert J. Cunningham, came to Rome for the canonization. Smith recalled that a friend visiting her at the hospital was given a prayer card of Mother Marianne and told to pray for her intercession. Mother Marianne had been beatified by Pope Benedict in May 2005. “My friends told me they prayed for me the night before they were going to just disconnect me” from the respirator, “and they prayed to Mother Marianne for me,” she said. The next day, “I woke up in the morning and started talking,” she said Though she could breathe on her own, the infection was still severe. St. Francis Sister Michaeleen Cabral and other members of the community soon started praying for Blessed Marianne’s intercession. During one visit, Sister Michaeleen gave Smith, to pin to her hospital gown, a bag of soil that came from Blessed Marianne’s grave in Hawaii. Smith said she still has the packet of dirt, which she now keeps in her Bible. After nearly a year in the hospital and rehabilitation, Smith was given a clean bill of health and released. She said her doctor couldn’t believe she had recovered. Doctors said that places where tissue had died had actually healed and regenerated. Catholic News Service

Kerala. This also demands greater dedication from me and the Malankara Church to serve the Church and society," Cardinal Cleemis told a Malayalam TV channel from the Vatican. Born in Mallapally in Pathanamthitta district in 1959, he was ordained as a priest in 1986 after his theological studies in Kerala and Pune. He also took a doctorate later from the Pontifical Seminary in Vatican. After serving the Church in different capacities, including that of bishop, Cleemis succeeded Mar Baselios as the head of the Malankara Church in 2007 as Major Archbishop and Catholicos. An influential Catholic group in Kerala, Malankara is one of the three Catholic rites in India. It was born out of the "reunion movement" in the last century which marked sections of the Orthodox community joining the Catholic fold. UCAN India State Disaster Management Authority recognizes WDC’s efforts Joypur: The State Disaster Management Authority in a public function at Khanapara honoured Sr Betsy Devasia SCC for the Women’s Developemnt Centre’s (WDC) contribution to Society: the extraordinary role the centre plays for the development of women and thus contributing to the Society specially in the disaster risk division. Speaking at the function Sr Betsy, the Directress of WDC, shared the various situations through which the WDC came to the assistance of various groups in the Society. “In 2004 after the major flood in Assam we found that women and children were most affected. We formed SHGs in villages and they began a sustainable living through income generating programme, she said. “We also trained the women in disaster preparedness. We believe that if we can train the women they are sure to succeed. They dare to move, take the risk and bring up the family.” In 2005 the WDC started residential programme to help the school dropouts, young girls from all 7 states of Northeast. Many of these girls are pursuing their degree courses or working in different institutions. The WDC provides Vocational Training to girls and women who had no opportunity for formal schooling. They are trained in Tailoring, Embroidery and Fashion designing which helps them to supplement the income to the family. In 2010 the WDC realizing the poor living condition of widows in the villages in Tezpur, organized them into SHG groups. About 100 widows and 50 spinsters continue to benefit from this programme. The programme helps them to build up a better self-image and self confidence in themselves. This puts them on the road to self-reliance and dignified life. *****************************************
