INDOOR MASS
The 10 AM and 12:30 PM Masses at Holy Trinity remain in the parking lot, except when thunderstorms threaten, in which case the public Mass will be cancelled. (The priest will still say the Mass, but out of public view). When weather’s uncertain, you can check on our website: archangelgabrielparish.org/plm.
The 10 AM Sunday Mass live stream will continue at facebook.com/archangelgabrielparish/live
To hear Mass from the parking lot, dial 301-715-8592 and enter the meeting ID 899-9821-0752#
For more info on parking lot Masses, go to www.archangelgabrielparish.org/plm
All Masses will be celebrated inside the churches according to the schedule with the exception of the 10:00 AM and the 12:30 PM Sunday Masses at Holy Trinity, which will be celebrated in the parking lot.
As of October 3rd, parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh have been permitted to increase attendance to 50% of maximum capacity provided that they are able to maintain all health and safety protocols. At Archangel Gabriel Parish, we have increased our registration numbers for Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. We will continue to wear masks, socially distance, and sanitize our spaces. Additionally, we will continue our current practice of distributing Holy Communion after Mass.
You can find what we are doing as a parish in response to COVID-19 at www.archangelgabrielparish.org/covid19 in order to make the best decisions about participation for you and your household. Bishop Zubik has granted everyone a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass.

ARCHANGEL GABRIEL PARISH PRAYER
O blessed Archangel Gabriel, you announced our salvation to the Virgin Mary. Pray for us that we may be courageous and compassionate, strong and faithful followers of her Son, Jesus.
By your intercession, obtain for us the unification of our parish, and the fruitfulness of our mission to make disciples. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints, through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

On this mountain the LORD of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken. On that day it will be said: “Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! This is the LORD for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!” For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures, he gives me repose. Beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul.R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.He guides me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk in the dark valley, I fear no evil, For you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage.R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life. And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come.R. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.
Brothers and sisters: I know how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress. My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.
Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in parables, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’ Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main road and invite to the feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. The king said to him, ‘My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?’ But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’ Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

In collaboration with the clergy, the pastoral and finance councils, and many others, I’ve been announcing identifying features of the new Archangel Gabriel Parish. Two weeks ago, we envisioned that this parish will be stewarding God’s gifts and mysteries to make missionary disciples for Jesus Christ and his Church. Then last week, we unveiled our logo, featuring the figure of Gabriel holding a cross and trumpet, all silhouetted by bright gold wings upstretched. For this week, Fr. Sam has graciously provided an overview of the pastoral plan which accompanies the vision. To keep it brief, Fr. Sam has restricted himself to four “approaches” by which we expect to come closer to being the parish we’ve envisioned. More elaboration will follow in later weeks.
• Last week we held the parish’s annual nationality festival and cash raffle, and the school’s car raffle. Though the pandemic limited our festival to take-out food, Tim Davis led the event to great success in both fellowship and financial gain. My personal favorite was Melissa Ondercin’s and Kristy Mosur’s German booth—you can write my name also as David Pöcking—but I also bought and enjoyed samples from the Italian and Mexican booths.
Tim urges me to credit Joyce and Ed Chezosky for preparing the American booth, Linda McCracken for freezer-loads of stuffed cabbage and the Slovak booth, Gary Harbaugh and the doughnut team, the Knights of Columbus for preparing all the chicken and beef, Mark Zadrozny for cooking 150 pounds of onions to accompany the pierogi, and numerous other volunteers who helped man the booths, set up, clean up, decorate, handle money. Thanks, finally, to all the patrons, whose fellowship, appreciation, and donations sustain the parish.
• Last week, Bishop Zubik relaxed some of our pandemic protocols, at the discretion of the parish pastors. At Archangel Gabriel, we are now permitted to go above our earlier limit of 25% of seating capacity for Masses, but because we must still observe masking and social distancing, we can’t realistically get to 50% of capacity (reaching 50% would require people to be too close to each other). For now, we’ll retain the practice of distributing Communion only after Mass is concluded, because I believe this is the best way to minimize duration of exposure and moments of inadvertent proximity as people move. We still need non-high-risk volunteers to commit to 30 minutes before or after Mass to help with seating or sanitizing: Contact Ken Zern at [email protected].
• Next Sunday, October 18, is Mission Sunday, also doubling as our Mission Co-Op Sunday, which got cancelled this year as a result of the pandemic. Your special offerings will be received for both purposes. More information is available in the bulletin, this week and next.
• We have our own mini-mission here at Archangel Gabriel as we host two student priests: Fr. Iggy from Mbarara, Uganda, and Fr. Adrian from Geita, Tanzania. Because they don’t get salaries, they depend for their spending money on the $10 Mass intentions they receive for Masses they say, most of which are unscheduled. Archangel Gabriel inherited a few hundred “extra” intentions (i.e., not linked to a Mass on a specific date and at a specific church), but the student priests have by now worked through most of them. If you want to have Masses said here at Archangel Gabriel, but don’t need them linked to a specific day or church, the parish office would be happy to receive them and assign them to our priests.

Over the last two weekends our parish has revealed the vision statement that will guide us in the months and years ahead as we move forward in the call to be “On Mission for the Church Alive.” Any good vision must be able to find accomplishment through measurable actions. Father Dave, the other clergy, and advisory bodies gave hours of time, thought, and prayer over the summer to craft a plan to reach our vision.
Four approaches were determined to attain the vision. By an approach, we mean an area of parish life. Worship, education, outreach, and temporalities were the terms used for many years when the old parish councils were made up of committees of workers who used their gifts of time, talent, and treasure to accomplish the work of the parishes. Looking at these areas of parish life with fresh eyes, they now stand for more than what we have grown accustomed to them being.
Now we see those terms from our past in the four approaches below in a way that keeps our attention on the goal. Here are the four approaches for Archangel Gabriel Parish.
1. Offer up our first and best gifts for the ministry of Word and SacramentWill we assess what we have at our disposal? Who among us has the talents we need? How do we allocate our treasure? What type of liturgical celebrations will draw people from every age group, so that every act of worship we undertake stays focused on inviting people to come to know Jesus Christ more deeply? It’s not about what one personally prefers, but what best gives glory to God and brings us together in praise, adoration, and worship of the Lord.
2. Form everyone in discipleshipCan we provide people from the youngest to the most senior among us with the guidance and support they need as they come to know Jesus personally through our catechetical efforts, through engaging them to think about the deepest things of life, through helping them to hand on the faith, and through every ministry, apostolate, and organization?
3. Create a parish culture where we receive each other as gifts from GodAre we willing to treasure the things that make us different and appreciate how we are the same? Do we build on our rich history even as we let go of judgment and mistrust to build a welcoming community that is centered on the message of Jesus Christ, and serves others because we are His disciples?
4. Direct our resources according to the priorities of our missionDo we know that everything we have comes as a gift from God and so must be directed to building up the kingdom of God? Is our focus on the mission of Jesus Christ and His Church so that decisions about how we use our resources – money, personnel, property – are not made from emotional attachments but from good stewardship with an eye to our future?

The Archangel Gabriel 1.“Gabriel” means “the strength of God.” Thestrong silhouette of our patron reminds usthat, despite the significant challenges weface, we have the strength of God with us.The figure calls us to be courageous as weshare the Good News in service of themission to make missionary disciples.
2. The Cross The angel holds a cross as his staffsignifying the Paschal Mystery as thefulcrum of faith. The cross is how Jesuswants his disciples to understand what itmeans to be a disciple: “If any want tobecome my followers, let them denythemselves and take up their cross andfollow me" (MT 16:24). Our work of makingmissionary disciples is a sharing in Jesus'work of redemption.
3. The Trumpet
The upwardly stretched wings convey theboldness of grace and the outreach of mission. They evoke the Holy Spirit as fire. The wings, too, look like a heart signifying the SacredHeart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary. Finally, the wings illustrate how we are to pointothers upward, into the life of God.
4. The Wings
5. The Colors
6. The FontGabriel’s task in the Bible is to alwaysannounce the in-breaking of God’s graceinto the world. Here, the trumpet speaks ofthe Annunciation, the announcement of theGospel, and the announcement ofJudgment. It is also a summons to assemblyand action, a call to worship and acommissioning.
Since the fifth century, Mary has traditionallybeen portrayed in blue because it is the colorof an empress, as she is the Queen of Heavenand our Mother. Gold signifies the invaluableworth of the gifts and mysteries we havereceived from God, but also reminds us of thePittsburgh region, where we are called to liveout the mission.
The font choice includes serif (traditionallooking) and sans-serif (modern looking). Thecombination is not only a good designprinciple but also holds meaning. The seriffont illustrates that we are steeped in the richtradition of the Church while the sans-seriffont signifies our mission to be creative inbreaking out of the doors of our churches tobring others to Jesus.

We are called through our Baptism to be part of the Church’s missionary efforts, through prayer, self-sacrifice, and support of the Mission Church through material aid. This year, Pope Francis asks us to respond to that call, saying, “Here I Am, Send Me!” To “send” ourselves, we can: PRAY for the Church’s worldwide missionary work, OFFER financial HELP and CHARITY through the second collection for our parish missionary group and the World Mission Sunday collection of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Pro-Life UpdatesFr. Joe Codori (Senior Parochial Vicar)
We had a turnout of about 50 people for Life Chain along Route 60. Many cars saw our pro-life witness as we silently prayed that the Holy Spirit change the hearts of those that do not value life from conception until natural death, and for the end of abortion. There were many honks and thanks in support, and a few blessings for those that were not so kind. Thanks to all that came!
Choices Pregnancy Services VIRTUAL Baby Bottle Campaign started last week and runs through October 25th. All funds go to support Choices Pregnancy Services in their support of women with troubled pregnancy and their abstinence programs taught at high schools. You can contribute to this noble cause at at www.fundeasy.com/m/5019626/.
Please consider committing to making a Holy Hour one day a week at Saint Malachy Church for the pro-life intention. The current Eucharistic Adoration hours are Monday through Friday from 5 AM - noon and 5 PM - midnight, and Saturdays from 9 AM – 1 PM.

ARCHANGEL GABRIEL PARISH WINTER COAT & CLOTHING DRIVE
We will be conducting our 22nd Annual Winter Coat and Clothing Drive for the needy families of the Appalachian Region of West Virginia beginning Monday, October 19th thru Sunday, November 1st. Please leave any winter coats, clothing, hats, gloves, blankets, and toys in front of the far right door of the three-car garages, located at the Holy Trinity Parish Ministry Center. Please note that furniture cannot be accepted.
All donated items will be delivered and distributed directly to our Appalachian neighbors who struggle to meet the basic needs of daily life. Your participation in this project provides warmth and comfort at a time when these families are most vulnerable. If you need any additional information, please call Barb Angelo at 412-953-4949.

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT: RESPECT LIFE GROUPMINISTRY SPOTLIGHT: RESPECT LIFE GROUPWritten by Katie McGregor
In October, we dedicate our prayers and actions to honor every human life. The loving members of our parish Respect Life Group take up this dedication year-round to bring awareness to protect the most vulnerable among us.
The main goals of this group are to stop abortion through peaceful prayer and sacrifice, support legislation that defends those who are aged or unable to defend themselves, and help Crisis Pregnancy Centers. So many of these goals are achieved through prayer.
When a group of faithful people pray for pro-life intentions, it is so powerful. This occurs during Lenten Rosary for Life and the Public Rosary Campaign. They also have the opportunity to experience the power of prayer at annual events such as the March for Life in Washington, D.C., 40 Days for Life at Planned Parenthood, and the Life Chain at one of our parish locations. Speaking to any of the members of this ministry, one can truly see the dedication they give to making a difference. Jim Manion recalls his first time at the March For Life as his most memorable experience as part of the Respect Life Group. He remembers:
“The bus was near capacity with joyful and prayerful people excited to pray together and show our country we are united in our efforts to end lawful abortions in the USA.” He has learned so much, and his dedication reminds us of the Prayer to End Abortion: “never to be silent, never to be passive, never to be forgetful of the unborn”.When Sharon Graham, also a member of the Respect Life Group, first began studying the Catholic Faith she was “delighted to find the teachings on the dignity of the human person, both male and female, and the strong pro-life teachings of the Church from conception to natural death.” This beautiful statement covers the center of the Respect Life Group, and Sharon has loved watching the group expand and deepen over the years. Helen Stamatakis leads the pro-life group, keeping everyone informed of events, seeking opportunuties for prayer, action, and ministry. Her incredible work to raise awareness and prayers has truly impacted our parish community. Last year, Archangel Gabriel parishioners contributed over $11,000 by our participation in the Choices Mother’s Day Walk, Baby Bottle Collection, and with members going to their annual dinner. Through prayers, petitions, and donations, there is no end to what our parish can accomplish together. The Respect Life Ministry is a shining example of caring, compassionate Catholics who remind us what a gift life is and what a gift it is to serve others.

Faith Formation UpdateSteve Swank (Coordinator of Faith Formation, pro tem)
Our staggered start to Family Catechesis continues today when the Luke Section has their first session. The remaining section of Fam Cat, the John Section, will start next week on Sunday, October 18.
Part of the session is a presentation to the parents which features a series of brief videos from clergy, staff, and catechists. For the first session on the Creed, Fr. Dave gave an overview of the Bible and explained how God speaks to us through it. AGP parishioner Dr. Janet Puppo spoke about how to read Scripture and understand the use of figurative language. Jacob Williamson talked about how to pray with Scripture and do Lectio Divina as a family.
It is wonderful that so many people are helping to make these sessions something special for the families. We are still in need of “tech help” during the sessions. If you are a Zoom expert and are willing to help with one or more sessions per month, please contact me at [email protected].
A heartfelt thank you to our parishioners, friends, neighbors, sponsors and donors for your support of our Parish Raffle and Festival. And a special thank you to all of the hardworking, dedicated workers who made the Festival work in this unique year. It would be impossible to count all that was done, but it is because we all worked together so well that success was attained. There simply is not enough room on this page to name every person who gave valuable time and/or financial support to these huge projects, but be assured of our prayers for we are grateful to God for you.

Meet our custodian, Mr. Paul Cunningham . Mr. Paul comes to us with an impressive background and a wonderful heart. Born and raised in Crafton, he has served as a volunteer firefighter in several local communities, is a professional carpet installer, and has enjoined his maintenance experience in an apartment complex. He jumped right in this summer when needed to help get our school ready for the hundreds of eager students who have entered our doors. The school remains clean, safe, and cheerful thanks to Mr. Paul’s hard work and dedication. A big thanks from our Kindergarten class featured above for installing their desk shields. We are blessed to have him as a new member of our AGS family.
Kindergarten is safe and high tech! With their brand new desk shields and brand new iPads, they are ready to take their year to the next level. So what do our eager learners love to do on their iPads? The SuperKids reading series of course! This rich, interactive, and fun content engages children while supporting and strengthening the reading skills taught in class. They just started and they are doing super well. Each student also enjoys number and letter tracing and teachers absolutely love the online tracking and skill assessment. We can’t wait to see what our super kids do next!
Kindergarten Are Our Super Kids!
Welcome Mr. Paul!
